I have long been a fan of the Cunning Man - as his name implies, he is as much a creature of bargaining and trickery as he is of magic. One of the things that I find amusing in the PC Grant series (starting with Rivers of London) is that the titular character, PC Peter Grant, is, at heart, a throwback to older ways of magic than his teacher - Peter is a bit of a Cunning Man, as opposed to being a Wizard. His master, Thomas Nightingale, is a Wizard. (He is also not the perfect choice for teaching magic to an apprentice - he is more the kind of wizard that you call on when you want a Tiger tank blown up....) In Pathfinder, I might fix a Cunning Man up as a Sorcerer or Witch - but always keeping an eye on the long con.... The Auld Grump |
