We watched two and a quarter episodes of Kindred: the Embarrassment last night - I tried to warn her that it was Bad bad, not entertaining bad.... But she had to find out for herself. Which led to two conversations - one was a fairly deep discussion about Goth music, and why she has (mostly) gotten out of it. (Summing up - bad Goth music is still bad music - the Goth music that I picked up for her was good Goth music, but still good music. Morthound and Dresden Dolls would be good even if they weren't playing Goth.) (I am not a huge fan of Goth... but it used to be a part of her life.) I guess one of the triggers there was that Abney Park had gone from being a Goth band to being a steampunk band- but she still liked their music. (She actually likes their steampunk MORE than she did their Goth. It's fun.) The other discussion was less deep, but... what tabletop games have been turned into either movies or TV shows, and are any good? D&D movies... bad. Hours out of my life that I will never get back. Dragonlance - I was amazed that it could be worse than the live action D&D movies, but it was. Much worse. D&D Saturday Morning TV show... bad. (Not good bad, but at least it was mockably bad. ![]() Pathfinder - Burnt Offerings stage production by the daVinci Middle School... ... ... from what I have heard was actually really good. (And a bunch of the Paizo staff bought tickets to see it....) http://www.livingdice.com/3017/paizos-p ... tage-play/ The Gamers - dumb, but fun dumb. Knowingly dumb fun - - they put up the entire movie to advertise the sequel... but now I can't find the official version. Made me laugh. ![]() Midnight Chronicles - from a d20 RPG setting... bad, but I give it bonus points for being an attempt to capture the feel of the setting - and, again, the full movie has been put online by the production company - - Picture Middle Earth if Sauron had won. A much more honest attempt than any of the D&D movies. Mazes & Monsters - Tom Hanks will show how Dungeons & Dragons is evil.... Dark Dungeons - you've read the Chick tract, now see the movie! (Brought to you by some of the same folks that made The Gamers - dumb, dumb, dumb, fun. ) The Truth about Dungeons & Dragons by The Dead Alewives... as acted by the characters from the computer game Summoner? There's a reason that this is a classic. ![]() A kind of sad attempt was made for a Simon & Simon episode. So, what am I missing? The Auld Grump |

The Knights of Badassdom, currently available on Netflix. It's bad. Really bad. Originally, my friends and I thought it would be done well enough to poke fun at the hobby, but still be a decent movie--something like Galaxy Quest. Oh, man, were we wrong. Apparently, some gamer saved up a bunch of money to make this movie as his pet project and all the money went to paying for Steve Zahn, Peter Dinklage, and Summer Glau. I have to ask: How is a band defined as "Goth" or "Steampunk?" Is it just based upon costuming and makeup? Or is there something to the music that people say is "Goth" or "Steampunk?" |

Mutant chronicles was pretty to look at while my brain was melting from the "story". |

I understand "The Last Witchhunter" was based on one of Vin Diesel's D&D games, the main character in the movie was named after his game character, and the after-credits scene is a short clip of one of his actual games. This from my wife, who used to have a big crush on Vin Diesel. |
