Hopefull others will feel free to add to this thread...
Today I ran a Spycraft 2.0 Wild West game, using Red Mesa - a build utilyzing the cliffs from Mars Station and the Sacrificial Portal, as well as the plastic Fire Dragon that was recently released by McFarlane.
The Hook - Trains are being robbed, entire carriages being carried off.
The Line - A dragon is emerging every night from the portal, seeking out the gold from the miners out further west, and carrying off the car that contains the gold.
The Sinker - The players don't realize it yet, but this game crosses over with Call of Cthulhu, and the 'dragon' is a manifestation of Yig, the Father of Serpents... and is not the actual bad guy in this mini campaign...
The party has discovered the first two of the missing carriages, smashed like an egg from being dropped from a great height (the guards inside were a tad scrambled as well) and one of the PCs has spotted the portal glowing a dim green in the twighlight... Next week they may go and pay it a visit...
The Auld Grump, with thanks to Alan Dean Foster, who's storyline Wu-Ling's Folly has shamelessly been plundered.
*EDIT* In case anyone can not guess, this thread is an excuse to trade war stories... 'No s**t there we were...'

Having seen the portal glowing on the top of the mesa they waited until morning and climbed to the top, noticing that a ramp of sorts had been carved up one side of the hard stone. There they found the portal itself, and the remains of a coolie, killed by a titanic blow to his chest. The ashes of a fire and the remains of either a sacrifice or an unfinished job of butchering a jack rabbit lying upon the circle of grey stones directly before the portal. Careful examination revealed that something had been scribed into the stone, but the coolie had carefully and patiently chiseled it off. Even in daylight the strange runes could be seen to glow.
They scoped out the mesa for a few days, and saw the dragon emerging from the portal. Not being complete idiots they decided to hold their fire rather than draw its notice. (The thing is bigger than a Pacific locomotive.) They also decided that they did not want to go through the portal while it was active (probably a good thing).
Half the group stayed behind while the rest went back to the railroad company and requisitioned some dynamite. Then they began the trek back to the mesa,
Meanwhile at the mesa one of the PCs had the *cough* brilliant idea of staking out something for the dragon to munch on so they could ambush it., so half of that group went off to get some sheep and some buffalo rifles. This left one person at the mesa, who decided that what he wanted to do was be someplace else 'til the others got back.
Somehow the two groups on the road managed to miss each other (I gabe them a 90% chance of meeting up on the road, but I guess that the Explorer's shortcut took the dynamite crew off road, 'cause up came 98.
They did meet up with the lone PC left guarding the site, and decided that heck no, they were not going to try to take that thing down with rifles! What the heck! So they set the blasting caps on the dynamite, ran the wire down the stony ramp and pushed the plunger on the detonator.
*BOOM!* They go back up, and there is now a crater beside the only slightly damaged portal.
Well that got them to talking again, and about the time they were jawbonin' at eachother the second group showed back up with some massive guns. Well, they decided to combine plans, since dynamite didn't work too well all by its lonesome.
So during what was left of the day they built some simple barricades so that three of the PCs could wait with rifles, and the others repeated their work with the dynamite, this time deciding not to squirrel some away for later. (If they had used their whole load in the first place they might have done more damage to the portal, but they wanted to keep some dynamite. For some reason it did not occur to them that it was fairly easy stuff to get in the 1800s out west.)
So that night as the moon rose behind the portal until is shown like a milky eye through its gape they were ready, and as the moon cleared the bottom of the portal itself the air began to glow.
The signal that the party had decided upon for when to push the plunger was when the shooting started. And so, as the first three shots rang out across the mesa, and three bullets smashed through the thick armor of the dragon's hide they pushed the plunger home.
*BOOM!*
Good thing they brought plenty of wire, the resulting explosion almost took the top clean off the mesa. (The portal did more damage going *BOOM!* than the dynamite did.) 'Course for the three gents who were on top of the mesa with rifles it weren't quite so happy of an ending... None of them survived the blast.
The railroad company on the other hand was quite happy that the robberies had stopped and paid up, though they were a bit dubious about the tale the heroes spun (leaving out dragons and portals, but adding in angry rail workers and outlaws holed up in a homebuilt fort on top of the mesa...)
I decided to downplay the CoC references, the only one remaing was the Elder Sign that the coolie had destroyed before enacting his ritual. (And though he passed as Chinese he was from a very different place than China.) For this I wanted more of a dumb brute beast than a cunning elder god.
I had no real solution to the problems, killing the dragon with rifles would have been difficult but not impossible, though whether they would have had a chance to pump enough lead into the critter is another story. Doing so on top of the mesa cut down on the range between the shootists and the dragon, so it likely would have killed 'em all. I had thought it most likely that they would have set up an ambush using gold as bait.
In any event, that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.
