I am starting this topic mostly to gain insight into others playing experiences. As a place to put funny or cool stories about your gaming incedents for others to read !
This one is about a character I played that was very short lived. He was a City Rat (if you have never played Rifts that's kinda like a futuristic street punk). The incedent happened late at night deep in the wastelands of Rifts Earth. The group was travelling in three vehicles, two "Mountaineer" ATV's (Standard Rifts main book vehicle), and a "Devil" 4X4 (Australia book one vehicle) all three fully loaded and decked out (including armored windows with visual slits to see through). Everyone but my character and the driver of the "Devil" were in the "Mountaineer's". As a general choice I always rolled on the "Insanity Tables" to round out my characters, in this case I rolled and turned out to suffer from alcoholism. During this incedent we had had several days of boring quiet and I was in a totally drunk state and still drinking when the incedent happened .
The driver and I were wearing full environmental MDC body armor. The "Devil" was in the lead to keep the "Mountaineer's" from taking any unneeded risks.
GM/DM: You've been driving for the last three days and nights in shifts to get to the next town when you come across several trees that are laying across the road, these trees appear to large for your vehicles to drive over and the thick forest on either side prevents going around, what are you doing? (turns to driver of the "Devil")
Driver: I come to a stop and engage the spotlight on the top of the "Devil" radioing to the "Mountaineer's" to stop. I begin sweeping the spotlight slowly across each side of the forest and over the fallen tree's.
GM/DM: You see nothing but what I've already described, (turns to me) and you?
Me: Take another swig off of my flask wondering if this means I'll have to get off my butt and work to help clear the downed tree's.
GM/DM: (nods then turns to the other players who in turn tell him they are engaging the light and sensor systems of their vehicles to further help in checking the area, all players remain in the vehicles except the top mounted gunners on the "Mountaineers", then proceeds to have us each make appropriate rolls for checking the area, successful rolls bring the following information) Infrared sensors are picking up several moving bodies amongst the tree's and they are closing in, you detect approximately two dozen individual readings (turns to driver of the "Devil") there is something wrong with the readings, they are humanoid in nature but are not radiating very much heat (driver rolls a Demon/Monster Lore roll to try and identify them through the readings rolling a brilliant success) They appear to be vampires, everyone roll initiative (Order of this round has the driver before me, then the other players) what are you doing?
Driver: I engage the top mounted gun and start targeting them through the inner vehicle gunner control, calling over the radio "Vampires". (GM/DM turns to me)
Me: (clueless about vampires, but having been given a minor explanation of how to fight them) er...vampires, I start looking for one of the Globe of daylight flares (a combo magic and techno item, the tech launches it, the magic activates once it reaches the end of it's fuel supply creating a magical globe of light that will keep vampires at bay, it also keeps it hovering in place at it's max height).
GM/DM: (continues through the other players, no combat yet then comes back to the driver and me) you single out one in your targeting sensors within fifty feet of the vehicle what is your action?
Driver: I open fire (rolls to strike, hitting the target filling the vehicle with the sounds of railgun fire.
GM/DM: Your weapon his successfully throwing the vampire back but doing no visible damage (turns to me for my turn) and you?
Me: I pull out one of the flares and begin trying to figure out how it works asking the GM/DM how it is lit, he tells me with a fuse and open flame (roll an IQ-intelligence check to see if I can see clearly eneogh to read the instructions on the side, successful, then proceed to roll an IQ check to see if I am smart eneogh to not light it inside the "Devil" ATV, fail miserably. GM goes through the other players who begin to engage the incoming vampires with ranged weapons then comes back to the driver who continues to fire, then comes back to me)
Me: I pull out my Zippo and attempt to light the flare as instructed *K'chink* (failed IQ check, fingers not working right )
Driver: er...do I hear any of this
GM/DM: you both have your helmets on right?
Driver: yes
Me: um, no, can't drink with my helmet on and I needs me drink
GM/DM: well I'm gonna give you a chance, roll a sound check (driver rolls and fails) sorry, no you don't hear anything that he's doing (driver continues to fire for this round, GM/DM turns to me) what is your action?
Me: I try to light the flare again (roll IQ check-successful) it works, I beam as the fuse flares to life, then reach for my flask to drink to a job well done.
GM/DM: *Snickers* (goes through the other players again coming back to the driver who tries again to notice what is going on and fails so continues his attack, again the GM/DM turns to me) As you sit there contentedly watching the fuse trickle into the flare, drinking happily from your flask the flare launches suddenly out of your hands and begins to bounce around the inside of the ATV, filling it with smoke and flame (rolls to see if it hits the driver or me, luck on our side it doesn't, GM/DM rolls appropriate burn damage for my exposed head then turns to the other players going through their turns before coming back to the driver) You hear something bouncing around with incredible force throughout the cab of the "ATV", as you turn your head away from the targeting system your visor is blinded by thick white and black smoke filling the cab, just then the flare activates and the thick smoke turns a blinding white, you both lose your next attacks. (continues through the other players twice that have attacks remaining, ours nonexistant ) Roll for new initiative everyone (numbers taken I get first initiative) What are you doing?
Me: Can I breathe with all the smoke in here? (GM/DM shakes his head) Then I'm getting out, I open the door falling out of the smoke to the ground (GM turns to next player with initiative who is also in the vehicle behind us and asks him what his move is)
Player: Do I see him get out
GM/DM: yes, several vampires are closing in, he doesn't appear to see them.
Player: I try to radio him telling him not to get out of the vehicle.
GM/DM: since he already claimed his helmet was not on then his radio is in the ATV and he doesn't hear you (proceeds to go through the other players who's characters are unaware what is going on, including the driver, then comes back to me) As your tearing eyes begin to clear you see a humanoid form appear out of the night before you what are you doing.
Me: (I roll an IQ check to see if friend or foe, failed horribly) I stumble toward the vampire (so drunk I think it's the driver) saying boy, I'm glad we got out of there, are you ok?
GM/DM: The humanoid before you is suddenly joined by several more, as you look up in surprise, unarmed and helpless you are suddenly grabbed and pulled into the woods and your very sudden demise (turns to driver) the smoke has mostly cleared from your vehicle through the door he opened, though blinding light still fills your cab as the flare hovers on the ceiling, what are you doing?
Driver: I close the door and tell the others to reverse, we begin to drive away.
GM/DM: The vampires appear not to be giving chase...
Me: (interupting GM like a bad dead roleplayer) ya, because they're drunk .
Driver: Well at least for once you were useful

Ah, yes, there I was, GMing a game of GDW's original Twilight 2000 for my wife and another couple while stationed in Germany in the late '80s. We had played 2 or 3 sessions, and the group was getting a bit off the mark from where I was trying to guide them, meaing the game modules I had werent helping much and I was having to make things up to keep the game going. So, I created the scenario for the group to encounter a surviving Soviet armor colonel among the ruins of a Soviet tank unit. He was going to guide them to my next big planned encounter in Warsaw, where they would find some art object that would supposedly lead Poland out of the post-apocolyptic dark age and get the group enough stuff and info to get them going towards Bremerhaven and a ship back home.
In this group, my wife and the other wife were both non-military, while the other male was a young warrant officer from a missile unit. I was counting on his knoledge of combat fatigue/post traumatic stress stuff to recognize what this Soviet character was going through, and his own leadership skill to take charge of this group.
Group walks into clearing, sees Soviet officer in an upright version of a fetal position, mumbling incoherently a combination of Russian and English. Friend's wife's character pulls out bayonet and slits Soviet officer's throat. Group then scavanges among the burnt out wrecks for anything usefull. One evening's gaming session done in about 20 minutes. I went back to the drawing board to try to come up with another way of getting the group to Warsaw. I dont recall that we ever played another round.

With the recent release of WW's first Dragon, and a beautiful dragon it is, I figured a dragon encounter story was in order. As a player I have encountered many more dragons than any one player ever hopes to encounter in their gaming lifetime, and as a GM/DM I have used them often eneogh myself against my player characters, but let us just focus on one of those stories, this was my first Palladium character and my second character ever. I had been playing for about six months, and my character had continued to survive right to that day, I was moderately young in the world of roleplaying. For those that it matters too, we were using the second edition Palladium Fantasy RPG. And this will be a bit of a long post as well, though I hope an enjoyable one. Feel free to add your own tales or stories if you have good, funny, or just plain bad ones .
I was about level six, which for reference is about two fifths of the standard levels (not including those that passed beyond level fifteen, average topper, rarely reached, and about half of the total available, which beyond the advantages are far fewer). I was moderately experienced, and reasonably smart, both in gaming, and in character. I was confident in my abilities, and believed that with the power of fate I would survive anything, or in other words, I was over confident, and full of myself. Well, live and learn, there are some lessons that are needed, and this one was a bit of a wakeup call.
Our group had needed an alternate route through the Old Kingdom Mountains, as the normally safe passes, were blockaded with the threat of an invasion, and with the amounts of orc, goblin, and troll presence we were wise to seek another unknown, or less used pass. We had asked around, searched records, even tossed out the occasional bribe, nothing, so, we decided to find one ourselves, we were a strong group, battle tested, good friends, and a treasure to find for ourselves, nothing would stop us, well...at least from trying.
We were an odd mixture, I myself was an Elven Ranger, I would be the scout and forager for the group, insuring our survival in a potentially hostile world. Even though I usually travelled light we were going to be passing into a terrain type which I was unfamiliar with and I would be much more weighed down than normal, there are things even I would need there. I had never gone into the mountains before, my experience was with the forests and plains, there my experience was at its best. Long before we had set out to find the pass I had begun seeking information on traversing the mountains, I knew some things, and could probably figure out most others. Most, others...I didn't quite like that little missing bit, my instincts decided not to like the idea, but this treasure was beyond measurable, and it had even caught my own attention, though it was not out of greed, I did not seek the treasure for myself, but to support a cause, my homelands forests were being taken down, I figured if I could bring this money to this cause it would be well used (boy is that a naive thought).
For the journey we had decided to use pack animals, the most suitable we found were llamas, they could carry a good load, were bred for mountain terrain, could be used as an emergency food supply, did not require vast amounts of water, similiar to camels, and finally, their dung was easily dried and used for burning fuel (heh, betcha didn't see that one coming). Between the llamas and ourselves we were well geared up and our jouney was quiet and uneventful. Even after we entered the mountains everything went well, there was the occasional encounter, but they were all easily handled, and to be honest, we were getting bored, and less attentive, in fact, we were downright relaxed. About the only thing we did right was have myself continue to scout out the paths ahead, and each time they continued onward, and so did we. Our biggest loss was to a sudden landslide that had cost us half of our llamas, and though that was a bit of a loss, their loads had long since been depleted and we were currently not planning on weighing them down with any more (though in theory, we could have spread the load between them and the packed ones). Two weeks into the mountain we came to a crossroads, the light was failing, and it was a decent eneogh spot to camp, though open, it had a good view and was a strategic vantage point. The weather was fair, and there was going to be a bright moon this night, not full, but very close too.
Being the resident scout I left the preparations of the campsite, fire, and cooking to the others, and as well as looking for wood, decided to scout one of the two paths ahead. I did not want to have to backtrack if things weren't right, as usual I chose the easiest looking of the paths. It wound around the side of a cliff but was more than wide eneogh for two to safely pass abreast of each other, on one side was a sheer drop into invisible darkness, not that I would have seen much if it had been light out, below had been shrouded in cloud for some time now, above was a steep cliff, reasonably unclimbable, and best avoided if there was another option, and of course, there was. For about twenty minutes I continued on quickly but stealthily, I was relaxed, not stupid. The path was easy, and I was just beginning to believe that we could continue on this way when I came to a bit of a deadend. The path widened into a long bluff covered in thick forest, darkness filled that forest, the canopy thick with growth shielding even what little light there was left from illuminating its darkness. I did not however feel a dread or threat from that patch of dark forest and if there was one, I would have been the first to sense it. The bluff itself stretched for about a mile, on the far end, dark cliffs rose into the sky beyond my vision, again there was the steep drop running the length of one side, and then there was the way I had just come from, which was still an option due to the crossroads other path. That just left one side open as an option, the side opposite the steep drop. By this time night had fallen, though it was a cool night (much more so in the mountains, though we had not yet seen snow), and the near full moon was high in the sky, a human could have seen clearly in these conditions, near as day, and I was not some mere human, I was of the Elf, my eyes could see much clearer in darkness, even in the depths of that dark forest if I so desired to penetrate it, which I would most likely for the wood. But at that moment I was more concerned with the path, the problem of firewood had been solved, and it would be nice to not have to use the dried dung if we did not have too, there was just something more pleasant about the smell and comfort of a true wood fire. So with a rangers eyes I studied the only option left to us.
Along the length of the forest ran a 40ft tall ledge, though slightly difficult to climb, and a bit of an irritation for us to get the llamas up, it was still a decent option, for above that ledge was a rocky incline, and though steep (about the equivalent of this backslash / for reference), there were plenty of stable, solid looking rock outcroppings, from the looks of it it would even be feasable to get the llamas up with little difficulty, it would be like climbing a ladder stair to most humanoids. My eyes followed the steep slope to the crest which stood another 150ft or so above the 40ft ridge, two hundred feet wasn't bad, but I had to know if it was worth it, I had to know if there was better or worse beyond that ridge. I had only been gone for about twenty minutes, and the climb would take little more than ten minutes, I decided it was worth it, the entire scout taking about an hour. By then the others would have dinner ready and I had built up quite an appetite so was eager to return. But first there was that ridge, and I was curious, and bugger all that nonsense about curiousity, and killing cats, I could handle myself if anything should arise. Decided I began my climb, which since I was an experienced climber on top of such an easy climb, was a fast climb indeed.
Now I'm going to pause for a moment and give a quick description of myself at that time. As a ranger I was proficient in the Longbow, I was also well learned in the way of the sword, specifically two handed swords, my favorite was the claymore, of which I had two, one was enchanted with Indestructability, and Weightlessness, the other was the finest forged that any could purchase, in craftsmanship it made the magic one look like a club, and its quality reflected in its use in battle, a fine blade, one of the best. There was also a brace of a dozen throwing knives, and about four other longer blades, a shortsword, and a small hatchet as well. On top of that I carried two quivers, with near 80 arrows between the two of them, one for the magical variety, the other for the more standard (though high quality) arrows. As well I carried several more items and a purse that had four partial, and one fully jewelled Dragon Coins, rare and worth about 1000gp without the gems and 5000gp with, part of a recent minor treasure find. In addition there was about 100gp in gold, silver and copper pieces. The clothing I wore was all of the finest make and well designed for a ranger in this terrain, it had cost a pretty penny as had much of my gear and most of it was worth far more than average. I had been given a supply budget of 10000gp to spend on gear before we left by the player with the map who was also funding the expedition, I spent a little under 2000gp on needed equipment and gear, the best of everything and donated the rest to a friendly priest I knew who ran an orphanage. A brief note as well, I am well aware of the length of two claymores, and the longbow, I had actually designed a pretty decent shoulder sling to handle all three and the two quivers of arrows, one right side up, the other upside down and enchanted to prevent the arrows from falling out. Looking back on it, I was overburdoned, and overprepared, and it radiated in my behavior and attitude.
To continue, I was about 50ft from the top when I heard a voice speak out, even as I lifted my head to see where this strange voice was emanating from, I was quickly becoming disturbed with the topic of the conversation as a second voice answered. First there was the fact that they were speaking in Dragonese, very similiar to Elvish, and if you can understand one, you can understand the other about as clearly, the same applied to both spoken and written. However, one can tell the difference, like comparing Irish english to southern states english. Being of the elf by blood, elvish was my original tongue, I, as with all elves knew it fluently, and was also well versed in its written form. I was well aware that they were speaking Dragonese, and I had my misgivingings even before my eyes rose to spy the source of the coversation.
Oh ya, and that was the second thing, the conversation, what I heard before I finished raising my eyes to this disturbing discussion was as follows.
"I wonder if an elf would taste better than an orc or goblin, looks like it would make a great snack", said the first in deeper voice than anything smaller than a giant could produce, I could actually feel the vibrations through the stone beneath my hands and feet, as well as in the very air around me.
This in turn had been answered quickly by the second, and his voice was just as deep. "I am sure we will soon find out, but this time we'll not burn it first, the last time you killed it and I for one like my food to scream and wiggle as I chew and swallow it, hopefully it will survive after we split it up."
Then in addition to this quite uncomfortable dinner conversation, I finally laid my eyes on the source. Above me, at the crest of the slope, two draconic heads, each easily the size of myself peered down to my now precarious situation (I was not knowledgeable about dragon kind, so to this day I know not what type). What can I say, I froze, I was so scared and shocked that for the longest moment I just stood there not knowing what to do, though I did not look into their eyes, instinct and knowledge saved me from that fatal fate, but I was still frozen with fear. I mean come on, one dragon is bad eneogh, your pretty much guaranteed death, or worse, unless lady luck, fate, and perhaps some good intelligence could save that mortal elf (or morsel oof as my GM/DM liked to call us). Fortuneatly they were too busy arguing to take advantage of my frozen state, or I would have been dead on the spot, period. I quickly came to my senses, and tried to block out the conversation which left me wanting to empty my stomach, but some of it still got through in snipets, something about flesh, skinning, who got the head. I looked away searching for a way out, my situation was defineatly hopeless, though well armed I was no match for one dragon, let alone two. I was stuck in the open, exposed to open air and from all sides, and at a disadvantage perched on the side of the slope as I was. There were only three options for me, go towards them, jump off the slope and drop the near 150ft drop to safety...ok, maybe not so safe, and those rocky outcroppings that a short moment ago had been to my advantange were obviously not so advantagous any longer. And finally I could grow wings, and learn to not only fly, but outfly a dragon...Oh, @*%#!!!!
My mind raced, I struggled with every possibility I could think of, and not one would work. Then my attention was drawn again to the conversation, or lack there of...all I could hear now was my own terrified breathing. Even had I looked I may not have seen death approaching, for this death can naturally become invisible. As well, looking would have been my death, and in that moment I reacted with pure instinct, I did the only sane thing anyone would do in that situation...I jumped. It was no simple jump though, I was a major Psionic, and using telekinesis I could enhance my jumps to great lengths. I used this to the best advantage I could, and kicking off from the slope side I angled the leap downward and out, barely dodging the dragons open maw as it silently passed through where I had been but a second before. Then I fell backwards, drawing forth with one hand my Indestructable claymore (only an enchanted weapon stands a chance of penetrating the hide of a dragon, and even then not easily), with the other I released my grapnel and line from my hip and tossed it wildly back towards the slope, hoping it would catch something, all this happened in the span of about five seconds. The next attack came from the second dragon, as silent and swift as the first, though this time I was prepared and swung the claymore hard and fast, the dragon was faster and easily evaded the clumsy swing. Then about 40ft down from where I had lept from I hit the slope again, hard, the breath was knocked out of me and I began tumbling through a painful hell of blood and bruising the likes of which I had never felt before, if it weren't for the high quality hard leather armor I wore I would have fared far worse. Somewhere in this pain filled hell I was aware that I was losing everything, my equipment, my weapons, my gold, and possibly even my life. If I truly could have seen through the eyes of my character, my life would have been flashing before my eyes. Then suddenly I was once again in the air, and for one brief moment I thought one of the two dragons had finally plucked me off of the side of the slope and I began to pray for the quickest death, maybe he would drop me.
Then I realized I was not in anythings grip, and dropping was exactly what I was doing, the ledge at the bottom, and at the bottom of that were some not too friendly rocks that would insure that what little life I had in myself would end whether the dragons got to me or not.
Then fate finally stepped in. That grapnel hook that I had wildly thrown before, the line still attached securely to my harness finally caught on one of the outcroppings, and with a sudden jerk that made me scream out in pain saved me just a few feet from impact. For the longest eternal moment I hung there, too stunned that I was still alive, and too wracked with shock and pain to move. There were still two dragons after me, but at that very moment I had actually forgotten them. Then training and that overriding survival instict kicked in and with the only knife that had survived the trip down the slope on my person I slashed through the line that suspended me and landed hard on the jagged rocks beneath me, but by then pain was beyond me, adrenaline had taken over, and with a lurching run I fled into the thick darkness of the trees. I ran until I was sure I was deep eneogh to not be found without a decent search (not knowing that the dragons could easily find me, and pretty much already knew where I was). But they did not follow me in, nor did they hang around long, at least they stopped gliding over the tips of the trees shortly thereafter and all was quiet. In truth, they had thought that I had pulled such a daring stunt to survive that they decided I had earned my right to live and moved along searching for another creature to torture.
When I was sure they had left I began to focus on enhancing my healing ability, as I said I was a major Psionic, and another of the few powers I had was Bio-regeneration which allowed me to heal most wounds over a period of time. I was also surprised to find I had no broken bones as these would have taken much longer to repair. Even then I did not heal completely, I was a sitting duck here and needed to return to the others as quickly as I could. Still...even as I stood there, still bruised and cut, but looking much better than I had moments ago and able to move much more easily, I decided to go see if I could retrieve any of my lost equipment or items. I found the bow, snapped in half where I had passed between two large rocks, as well as the non magical quiver and arrows, of which I was able to retrieve two which I did not bother to pick up. A few coins, and both swords (neither worse for the wear), and that was it, what little else was there was either destroyed beyond retrieval, or nowhere to be seen or found. And I was not going to waste time with a more thorough search.
Needless to say when I walked into the firelight back at the relative safety of the campsite my friends were greeted with something they did not recognize at first. My armor and clothing were ripped and torn beyond repair, my equipment, weapons and gear were nowhere to be seen but for the two swords. I never went off on my own again after that (or at least that character didn't). As well, as soon as I finished healing I got quite drunk and we didn't go anywhere for another day till I recovered.

Rofl, that's hilarious Legacyicon.
This one is about Robotech, and one of the first campaigns I ever GM/DM'd. It is one of the only module supplements I ever used and comes out of the book "Robotech RPG Adventures: Ghost Ship".
The PC's had all been doing well and had gained much in levels and experience, they had done so well in fact that they were all granted the use of the "Super Veritechs" which are much more heavily armored, faster veritechs than average ones. It was a great responsibility and they were all proud of this accomplishment and looking forward to their next assignment so they could play with their new toys so I decided to give them a toughy. They were to investigate a floating derelict in the debris ring that now encircled the earth, which had been created from millions of ships of the line (all miles long and quite huge) that had been destroyed in the epic final battle between the Zentraedi fleet and the much smaller earth forces, and their converted Zentraedi allies fleet (ie; the imperial fleet under the command of Breetai).
The ship itself was a modified Zentraedi Cruiser, A.K.A. Salan Scout Ship, the smallest ship of the line of the Zentraedi fleets (but still incredibly huge, over 1/4 mile in length, the flagship is 3 1/2 miles long). There was a chance that the ship was salvageable and the Robotech defence forces were interested in its recovery if possible. There was no sign of any power, lights, etc... from the ship so it was believed to be abandoned, a shuttle was to stand nearby with a support if they needed backup or a pickup. They were to enter, check for signs of life, and to determine whether the ship was salvageable, as well as search for any protoculture, a very important fuel source which is vital in powering mecha and ships.
The mission had been going smoothly, with only a few strange things that the players took note of. One was that close proximaty of the ship prevented communications (which they judged to be caused by the debris field, not unusual), second, the external hull had been covered in strange unknown devices, one of which they removed for later examination, and three, upon entering the ship it was fully powered and functional. Being a bit headstrong and cocky they decided to progress anyway rather than trying to leave and scrub the mission. They had lost all contact with the shuttle but again they had simply attributed that to the debris field and general radiation, in reality the strange devices covering the ship were a kind of energy dampener which prevented not only communication, but also detection of any power used in or around the ship, but the players did not know this and continued as normal.
They had entered at an area I hadn't expected but as usual I did what any good GM/DM does and improvised. They came through an airlock, found no signs of life and began to search, they only got as far as the first room. It was a Protoculture Chamber, used for cloning the giant Zentraedi warriors, and was fully functional. In fact one was even in the process of being cloned even as they entered, the process was automated so there was noone needed to monitor the cloning. One of my PC's was playing a married couple and each had their own veritech, the male was in command of this wing, his wife was his second. His wife also had an insane hatred of all Zentraedi, even allies, and if they weren't allies, she had a shoot first ask questions later policy (this player was a roleplayer to the hilt). She unloaded a full volley of eight missiles into the cloning tube (not her entire payload, but the most she could fire at once). What happened next was just insane. First she rolled full damage, 1D4x10 MD per fragmentation missile, all eight were fours for a total of 320 damage, an incredible roll, and was completely honest, I knew the dice. And second, she rolled a natural 20 (critical double damage, so 640 damage) to strike. It was serious overkill, the tube only had 40 MDC, one or two missiles would have been sufficient, but she wanted to make sure that no Zentraedi was ever cloned from these tubes again, her husband even tried to stop her, but too late, her hatred was that bad, even for a partially cloned Zentraedi.
Now normally this wouldn't have been too bad, it would have warned anyone else on the ship that they were there, but otherwise...
But in this case, it turned out far worse than they or myself had expected. You see, the tube had a nasty little surprise of its own. If the damage had been restricted (ie; one or two missiles to disable rather than obliterate) then what happened next wouldn't have happened. In the GM/DM notes there was this little blurb...
"If the base of the tube receives more than 20 MD points of damage (say someone blows a few missiles up near the bottom of the chamber), the entire Protoculture supply will explode. This will blow up the entire room, inflicting 2D4x100 points of damage (applies to everything in the room). There is also a 40% chance that it will cause a chain reaction that will blow up the entire ship within five minutes (20 melees), taking EVERYONE aboard it to a fiery death in space. The protoculture chamber can be incapacitated by destroying the contro panel (60 MDC) or cutting off its power supply, without causing an explosion or chain reaction. It is only the gas which is so volatile."
Things just got worse from there, I dutifully rolled the initial backlash of damage, and rolled two fours myself (what are the odds against that, even with different dice), so the damage to the chamber was 800 (no critical as there was no strike roll needed), it was eneogh to kill all the PC's in one go, but I decided to cheat a bit and try and save them, there was no way they could have known, one of the few times I ever made a similiar ruling. Instead of applying all the damage to the main bodies of their "Super Veritechs", which would have killed them all and then some (Main body MDC was only 300 MDC), I spread the damage over their entire mechs (ie; hands, arms, legs, etc...). The only thing that saved them in the end was their reinforced pilots compartments, and now they looked like melted slagged metal rather than mecha, transforming was out of the question let alone much else, in fact it was only a luck roll that allowed half of them to have functional foot thrusters, which the began using to return to the airlock, a pretty straight trip. At first they didn't know what had happened, but then they began to feel distant explosions, um...remember that 40% chance of a chain reaction destroying the entire ship, well, again the roll went against them, I had rolled and got under 10%. The players began their retreat at a very slow crawl, mostly short hops with their foot boosters, and even then they would have been screwed if not for one thing. The energy dampening field had been taken down and the shuttle had sent in the backup as soon as their distress call had been recieved (from the one working radio on the least damaged mech that had been in the hallway).
They learned a valuable lesson that day and it was a very long time before any of them were ever trusted with a "Super Veritech", nor any other advanced versions (like the "Armored Veritech). They had allowed eight of them to be irrepairably damaged so this wasn't a surprise. I was laughing for hours, an adventure that was to take a few game sessions reduced to one hour of play, priceless, always expect the unexpected .

Another favo of mine is the Star Wars game I played in Texas. We were playing Tales of the Jedi (before the source book had come out). The majority of players were Jedi. We had been assigned to find and bring in dark Jedi and his trainiees.
We had tracked him to the forest type planet. There he had a strong hold, and many many hired thugs. Our plan to get into the strong hold was to steal one of the patrol speeders (think troop carrier with no top, except for the drivers compartment). Well the game before ended with us messing that up, and allowing a troop carrier and four speeder bikes to get away.
Open that next session with us in the middle of giving chase, aboard another of the troop carriers. Weaving in and out of the sparse, but strong, trees. We catch up, but can't get too close because of blaster fire. Being a Jedi, I Enhance my Attributes, and leap. I land on one of the speeder bikes, and then leap again, landing aboard the troop carrier.
I am instantly confronted with a lightsaber weilding students of the Darkside. Three in all. I make quick work of one, then block the attacks of the other two with seeming ease. I am then forced to backflip off the carrier, and I landsadling a Speederbike. I slice the driver in two and Open fire on the Carrier. Meanwhile my fellow Jedi attempt to close the gap. They manage to arrive in a simular fashion, leaving the non Jedi of the group to continue giving chase and dodge speederbike fire.
I pull up alonside, and leap back on, cutiting down a second dark Jedi, I pull back for another attack, when the last dark Jedi yells "wait!!"
I pause, arm back, ready to strike, and loose an arm and lightsaber to a tree branch (ripped off) I too am pulled from the carrier, and would have been goo on the forest floor had I not been saved by the non Jedi. So instead I crash into the back of 'our' carrier.
I grab a med kit, and stabalize my bleeding, then use Heal self to ...heal myself. Grabing a blaster, I ordered the non Jedi PC to get me along side the enemy carrier.
We got alongside it and I took careful aim at the driver.
I fired, getting a kill shot, the same moment that the Non Jedi fails his mauver roll.
So, the enemy speeder, with all my fellow Jedi on it, spins out of control, and crashes into a grouping of trees, no on survives.
Me know...
I stare in disbelief, stating, "i lean forward, but do not move otherwise"
The GM asks "For how long:
I say, for as long as it takes to believe what I just saw.
