In my homebrew there are actually some throwbacks among the dwarfs who sometimes stand over seven feet tall. Dwarfs are giants, just very short giants.... These throwbacks generally get different training than the rest of the dwarfs, usually in the military. Dwarfs are, in theory, interfertile with ogres, producing a sterile hybrid. This is something that has never happened in the history of the game world - dwarfs and ogres just don't smell right to each other. (Humans, halflings, and elves don't smell right to them either, and neither is interfertile with either dwarfs or ogres.) Just an amazingly useless piece of trivia for the game world.
Ogres, by the by, are a great deal more civilized in the setting than in standard D&D, and get along just fine with the dwarfs. Not so much stupid as slow, there have been a number of ogre philosophers and mathematicians, including the equivalent of Copernicus - to reflect this they have a -4 to intelligence, but a +6 bonus when taking 20 with intelligence based skills. (Giving them a net of +4.) Slow, but amazingly thorough of thought.
