Shadowforge is one of the few mini companies I know that has failed, in my opinion, to increase its sculpting quality significantly during the years it has been around. There are still some jewels of sheer insanity, like the Blow-up Doll Zombies.

I've got a fine cast Techmarine from GW ( in need 2 more) for my Pre heresery ish world eaters and the just the thought of transporting 1 let alone 3 scrares me away from assembling it.

The again whe all 3 are finished they will have cost me £120 in bits just for 3 toy solders !

Just on its own, I'm not a fan of this guy... Its skin is orange (is it an Oompa Loompa, from Loompa Land? Did it pop into our world, discover tanning salons, and find a portal back?), and the sculpt isn't generally to my taste.

Then compare it to any of the dwarves in the pre-painted DDM range (that I've seen), and it gets worse by comparison. For my money, if we've moved the game to the table and are putting minis down, it's because a fight is happening, and this guy really ought to look like he's in a fight. There is a place for non-combatants, but if I'm going to get a bunch of these guys in a case (like I'd expect to), I want my armored, axe-wielding dwarves to be in the thick of things. Maybe if this guy was a leader, and there were dwarf minions, that would be fine (if there were only a few of these per case and they looked a lot nicer, almost like a centerpiece to a force of dwarves). This pose could be used for a guy that was grimly surveying the battle around him, waiting for the right time to ponderously stride toward his doomed foe (or without warning fleche into the fray like a fencer). That could be cool. But if he's the only dwarf in the set, isn't all that appealing to look at, and he's a fighter? He should be fighting.

I don't even know where to start. Why is its skin orange? Why doesn't it have fur? Why does it look like Cerebus if you imagine it without those horns? In short, why doesn't this model look like a minotaur?

The dwarf looks better than any of the D&D minis that I have seen. Which, sadly, does not mean that I think that it looks good, just that the D&D dwarfs looked like crap. As for orange skin, I have a D&D dwarf handy, from one of their non random Heroes sets... guess what? Orangish skin. I guess that dwarfs like buying Tan in a Can.... Other than that, I can't really defend it - the pose is rather static, and I do not like the cape.

The minotaur on the other hand, I have no problems with - not my favorite, but not all cattle have horns that point up. Take a look at highland cattle - not only do the horns not always point up, but sometimes they don't even point the same direction... and sometimes there are more than two (I have seen one with five - odd numbers of horns were sometimes taken as signs that a cow had been faerie touched)... and the cattle are wooly....

Plus, the skin isn't orange on my monitor. You may want to adjust your screen... it is a yellow brown on my screen, it is likely that the dwarf is not as orange as you are seeing it either. (Though it still looks like the dwarf is wearing Man Tan to me....)

Steampunk is so 'in' at the moment. Yup. I want those heads too, but having a lack of use for them, I can't bring myself to buying them.

I really wish there was something like that in cheap pre-paints. I just can't seem to bring myself to start another hobby. Painting things right takes skill and I would have to learn it...which takes time and money.
