I have obtained something of a holy-relic to add to my collection. I actually found an original, hardbound copy of Rogue Trader at Half Price Books. Yes, I payed $45 for it, but thats about eBay price, so I can't complain. Mmmmm...old gaming goodness... |

Good find mate! There is still a heck of a lot of good stuff in this book. I like the random generator tables & just the wealth of info Tim P. created for it waaay back when. Plus dig all those old photos of the terrain they played on! 40k had more elements of what you typically see in an PRG back then. I made a few trades with a buddy of mine years back for a copy of that, the old marines companion and the one with the eldar lists in it. ~Floyd |

hmmm, can't really say about the rules(it was too long ago now) but 2nd ed. had better models(plus the card terrain was cool, not wwg cool, but in it's own way) i too have not played 4th, but i don't own it anyway, i didn't even play 3rd ed. much as far as i remember(which isn't far_) 2nd was better my current 40k choice would have to be: dawn of war, as you don't need to go and spend any money in a GW store 
p.s. why am i posting, i have 55+ walls to kitbash

Ok...so I threw it away in 1993 (or was it 1995?). The binding was shot, I had never played the game, and I had to do some sudden reduction in my material possessions due to moving form an 8 room house to a 1 room apartment. What did I know back then? E-bay had not been invented so I had no clue what it would be worth. I suppose I should not mention that I tossed my copy of Talisman with the expansion packs as well, should I? Ok, so I am kicking myself on tossing Talisman now, but what is done is done...sigh... |

This thread is moving rapidly into a geek-disposal-shame thread........... Not that anything like that has happened to me...... I still have my Rogue Trader back in the UK in a Ring Folder since the binding went years ago....... Nothing happened to me, no sir, nope, nothing......... except that mint copy of 2000AD Issue 1 with toy still on cover that my mother threw away when I was at Uni, or that collection of old Action, Eagle and Battle comics that my Grandfather handed down to me that she also threw away when I was away............. *starts crying over PC* |

Mine I sold back in 93 or 94 because I was funding the new edition of the time. It in turn got stolen during a break-in - with all the guys minis. Sad. As for the current I think I have 4th but really have no joy left knowing that nothing is new nor exciting. Rehash rehash. But the R-Trader was and still is one of the sexiest books put out there for wargamers. So much raw material that had so much flavor. Most if not all companies run of a tried and true method that steals away from some of the mystery and intrigue that makes a new game fun. Lord Abaddon of Wormwood |

I've kept out of this discussion so far because my oppinion is obviously biased. (Take a look at my profile if you wanna know why) Personally, I like the 3rd/4th edition much better then the 2nd. At least for 40K. 2nd edition rules worked great for Necromunda and GorkaMorka, but they simply weren't capable of handling full armies. Rogue Trader was kind of a "Story Telling Strategy Game". It included many aspects usually associated with RPGs, rather than Strategy Games. This concept was later revived for the Inquisitor game. WH40K 2nd ed. was the attempt to turn 40k into a pure competitive strategy game, without loosing any of the rich background that had already been created. While this worked out not so bad, it didn't really work as well as it should have. 3rd ed. took the gaming aspect into the right direction, but failed to convey the background that makes the 40k universe so unique. IMO, that was the real problem with Dark Eldar: They weren't underpowered, but undertold. When Dark Eldar came out, nobody really knew anything about them, and their Codex didn't tell anything either! That's the reason why they were so poorly recieved, and their poor reception was the reason why no serious steps were taken to expand their rules or their background. This mistake was repeated several times with the codices of existing armies. GW started to correct this towards the end of the 3rd ed.'s lifetime. Codex: Tau was the first of the new (or old) design which included more background. Consequently, the Tau were much recieved better than the Dark Eldar had been. 4th ed. is actually nothing else but 3rd ed. with many of its mistakes removed. Officially, it's not even called "4th Edition". It is the "Revised 3rd Edition". Yeah, I know, everybody calls it the 4th Edition. Me too. |
