I was just rumaging through the closet, and I called my buddy and asked him if he wanted to play (Traveller) 2300 AD. His response was "let's play Megatraveller!"
Never played the original, just did the pirate stint with Mega. |

*sigh* I played. Probably the only part about the game that annoys be was the size of the computers. It was like 3 tons and could run 1 program! Otherwise, the rules were quite reasonable. (I spent a lot of time designed ships.) |

I'm glad it's not just me. I recently bought the dvd from Marc Miller with the original traveller material on it, and also the JTAS dvd. I also found this review from a very old edition of White Dwarf (Issue 6, April/May 1978) by Don Turnbull. ANyway, I hope it amuses given that 30 years later the game is still going strong. "Traveller is produced by Game Designers Workshop in the USA and its arrival in the UK was greeted with some rave reviews in amateur magazines and it was hailed as the game which would do for science fiction what D&D has done for fantasy. It is not, of course, the first role-playing game in the SF genre - TSR's Metamorphosis Alpha (MA from now on) preceded it by nearly a year; yet no similar laurels were garlanded on the brow of MA and it seems to have disappeared with hardly a ripple. Yet Traveller and MA have a good deal in common, at least superficially. It is a debatable point whether either game will actually be played, experimentation aside. D&D is played, and played extensively, both face-to-face and by post. New D&D-orientated magazines are still appearing and there seems to be an inexhaustible supply of material for them – enthusiasts continue to relish debate on new monsters, new character classes, new artifacts and new approaches. En Garde appears rarely to have been played face-to-face but has established a fair postal following - it too seems to have 'arrived', though not to the extent of D&D. [...] Altogether, what is here is very satisfactory and much of it is stimulating. The presentation is exemplary, the detail impressive, the treatment exacting and the inventiveness inspired. However I feel there are serious drawbacks - not in the rules as they are (despite omissions and some evidence of inadequate testing) but in respect of the game's scope. I get the uneasy feeling that here is a prime example of something which will be welcomed avidly and bought (sales are already good and this article is unlikely to change that) but never achieve 'active status'. Its appeal is immediate, its attraction compelling and its topicality apposite, but my guess is that it will occupy shelves rather than players' minds. Having said this, I can't honestly suggest you don't buy it – in so many respects it is too good to miss; but be prepared for the transient nature of its appeal and usefulness." Cheers, wukong |

I've hung onto those little black books - may even get to play them again with my kids. Classic stuff. I've most of the core books (think I'm missing Robots and Scouts, will have to find the box again and check) and several of the adventures. I keep an eye out in second hand stores in the hope of picking up the missing books. |

I was always interested in Traveller but I could never talk my Fantasy Dungeon Hack and Slash group into the idea of it. I'm thinking of getting the GURPS Traveller. 15mm or 1/107: Another scale popular with Historic War Gaming. Scale down 59.81% I'm glad that thread is still getting used. |
