| Post subject: | Wacom Bamboo Fun Tablet? |
Somehow the title Bamboo Fun Tablet feels like the subject line on a Spam mailing, but I will soldier on regardless.... I stopped by Best Buy, with the intent of looking at *mumble*, and maybe splurging for my own birthday present to myself, but instead became distracted by a rather silly looking box containing the Bamboo Fun - a bit pricey, but nearly everything I have heard about it has been positive. Goodness knows that I do enough mapping that I am more likely to get regular use out of it than I would a *mumble* - putting off that purchase until I know whether or not I am going to next year's Origins or Gen Con. Given the nature of this community I figure that there is better than a 50/50 chance that at least one person has used the Bamboo, so... any opinions out there? The Auld Grump |

The fidelity is lower than I expected, but I use a high end tablet and a 3-D pen tool on occasion. Although the Bamboo is good for scribbling or for quick sketches I found it rather lacking, for serious art work. Depending on what functions you need it may be worth it but eventually you will want to move on. That being said, as an entry level tablet Wacom has always put out a superior product. Honestly for the price point and size it maybe what your looking for. |

Those of you who have been mocking me for being too cheap to buy a digital camera can now start laughing - I think that I will be getting the full Wacom tablet instead of the Bamboo Fun, despite it costing almost $400. 
Partly it is the size - the Bamboo Fun was just too small - and partly it is the software loadout - the full tablet includes full versions of the software. Plus, I tried the full tablet, and found that it felt more solid, and responsive. So, I am going to avoid picking up the cheaper tablet, no matter what my penny pinching soul has to say on the subject. I am also promising myself that even if I don't get a digital camera for Christmas, or a gift certificate that can be used for one, I will pick up a camera in January. Mind you, I still don't think that I will use it enough to be worthwhile - I was 'loaned' one for Gen Con, and took maybe six pictures total. (Loaned in the sense of having it thrust into my hands and told that I would take pictures.... This is from one of the folks who may chip in a certificate towards a camera.) I am not very photo oriented.

Nether was I but once you start working with it you will find that there are more and more moment that you use your camera. You may not think your are photo taker and this is a result mainly because you do not have one on hand. Also look at the Canon ISUS 960IS - This is my latest camera - I took it over to Italy and came back with 20GB of photo and movies. I also took my computer and weeded a lot of the shots out with in the 24hr span of taking them. Compacts for the average user are far better options than D-SLR's. I do have the Rebel and have used the D series (bigger EOS) that my brothers own. With the compacts you don't have to worry about owning let alone swapping lens (the owning part is the stupidly expensive). Also the fact you have a medium level video recorder. This is the gold part - you have a high level picture capture device with the bonus of being able to capture the moment with video. The 15s - 1m odd is more than enough to make sure that moment in time is yours forever. I have the bells peeling in Assisi upon the hour - that is almost worth more to me than all the 200 shots I took in that town. The only other fact I would like to point out for you is the weight factor of a SLR vs. a Compact. I could fit mine on my hip in a little pouch. When using the EOS it's around the neck or in a bag - to me that is heavy work. You see guys (30 - 50 on avg) touring on holidays tutting around the camera bag with tripod and at least three lens - they go home never using the tripod and didn't swap the len out once. I will most likely be picking up a compact - no matter how much I might lust after a SLR camera (specifically the Rebel). Entirely because of the cost - Weight does not mean all that much to me. (You should try hefting my laptop some day. 17" widescreen Gateway, weighs a freakin' ton.) ***Warning!*** Off Topic Meanderings Ahead! ***Warning!*** I only paid $150 for the computer at Dutch auction, and I was specifically looking for the big screen brute.  The only problem is that I have not yet installed XP on the beast, it is still running (ugh) Vista. Great for lugging around for working on, and watching movies widescreen. (I don't watch television, but I buy a lot of DVDs.)
This was also when I realized that folks who bid at auction are nuts - I bid $150 on the Gateway, because I didn't expect to get it - but $150 was a fairly safe amount, even if I got both the Gateway and the computer I expected to have a winning bid on I would still be within bounds. I bid $300 on an Acer - expecting to get it, and aiming $100 under what I would have paid at Best Buy for the same machine. The Acer sold at over $500, ($100 more than it cost at Best Buy) but I got the (much better) Gateway that I had lowballed. The biggest thing of course is that there were 36 of the Gateway up for bid, and only one of the Acer. (Why I like Dutch auctions. )Still, I do not understand paying more at auction that the danged thing would cost at the store.
***Warning!*** Off Topic Meanderings End! ***Warning!*** Kodak cameras seem to discount fairly often at Best Buy, and that is what I used at Gen Con. (As an aside - I have not even looked at the pictures, and returned the camera to him. I suspect that I will see them in an e-mail someday.) I guess what it comes down too is that I am more tactile than anything else - I get more enjoyment out of modeling the cardstock terrain than I do having it, or even using it in game, and get more satisfaction from painting a miniature than looking at it. The Wacom tablet fulfills that same tactile element of my personality. (This is likely also why I have about a gazillion maps done by hand and on the computer that I will probably never use in a game - I just like making them.) The Auld Grump |

Been playing around with the beast. Lots of fun. 
I think that having this will actually make me much more likely to get a camera - but less likely to send in undoctored pictures. (Now that I am busy preparing my homebrew game to be converted to Fantasy Craft I may use stills, run through Painter, by way of illustration.) One thing that I have found I really do not like is the mouse - for some reason the included mouse annoys the heck out of me, dragging across the tablet rather than gliding across my mouse pad. And for some reason one of the buttons seems to have been defined as Mute - so I will be puttering along (putt, putt, putt) and suddenly my MP3 will stop playing.  So, back to my old mouse for that.
The tablet came with a decent mix of programs, and if I really want to I can spend another $300 and upgrade to the full version of Photoshop. (Not aprticularly likely, given my artistic abilities, or lack thereof.) If it had been InDesign they would have had me.... even though I am still very happy with Page Plus 13. I still remember using InDesign for the first time. The very best thing about InDesign was that it wasn't Quark! (If you have ever used Quark then you will know what I am talking about. ) The non-profit I worked for at the time upgraded to InDesign simply because it was cheaper to buy InDesign new rather than to update Quark - and it was a much, much, much better, faster, and easier to use program.

Well, I have been told not to buy a digital camera in the next few weeks - from the same folks who got me an MP3 player the same week I finally decided to buy one...

Ugh... been looking at Cintiqs.... Dear gods they are expensive, and, dear gods, it seems like more than half the retailers haven't noticed that Wacom has dropped the list price by more than a thousand dollars - making Wacom one of the cheapest places to buy the Cintiq. (Not all that likely a purchase for me, more like a kid looking into the candy store window.) $1,999 from Wacom, but an awful lot of places are still listing it at $3,300....
