Backstory: tread plus a pocket projector for unwieldy maps started an interesting "project" at my house.

I was wondering if anyone else has experimented with augmented gaming recently. I've been running a game based on modules and got a projector for some not-so-practical maps. So far for the original purpose, I love it.

Right now we're using top-down projection, but I just finished a set-up for bottom-up so that we can essentially have virtual speed mounted HV Streets and Streets of Legend. The idea being the we can add the buildings and trees and such without too many shadows.

We've been experimenting with an ir pen, wiimote, webcam, and shadow blobs; but we haven't settled on anything that we truly like yet (especially adding in the opportunity to play with a friend several states away while still using some miniatures).

So yeah, what's your experience?

I don't have any experiences to share, but what you're trying sounds pretty cool. What software did you use for the wiimote?

We use skype and it works great, we project our buddy from montana on the wall and he split-screens from the streets/sewrs cameras and the dm/other players cam. I'm a pencil /notebook guy so you'll have to look elsewhere for any tecki talk. We use a overhead shot of the terrain and a roving cam to frame the action. A stationary cam captures the dm and players. Works great.

I tried using Johnny Lee's . I'm having trouble with the radius, but that's an issue of me and my wiimote, not the program; the program works beautifully.

As far as blobs with a webcam go, I've tried . It picks up blobs and shadow blobs perfectly. I also discovered that my hubby's webcam can pick up the ir pen with this without removing the ir filter or making a custom light blocker from exposed film. I'm not a programmer though, so making the blobs read as generic (mouse) input is beyond me.

I've been thinking about the dual projector/webcam idea some. It could work with projected images on the distance player side and if their webcam only sent back ir data then they could move their own figure essentially that way.

I've thought about if they projected the whole image back instead of just an ir dot (which would make callibration for my side easier), but I'm a little worried about amplified light.

I like the idea of displaying the player's face. We could use skype and an extra computer on each end and let the player be a talking head on a laptop screen. Very Max Headroom.
