Oi! Twenty-six people signed up for twelve slots. And I need to decide how we are handling the overflow - more than half won't be able to play. :(

Three of the signees are players in my regular games, including 'that girl'. I know maybe six more by name. I don't know if I should slot the folks I know first or boot them first. Both have problems. And no one thought to write down the order the sign ups came in. (My first choice would have been 'first come, first served'.) Instead I have an alphabetized list....

For what it is worth, the organizers of the retreat apparently didn't expect it either, and had thought that I would have seats remaining for folks to join after the retreat began. Then they looked at the numbers.

I got word back, just minutes ago. It is a go at two games per day, and the higher payment. (For some reason they are fond of calling me at home after 11 PM. This is three times now.)

Capped at 26 total players, even though they got four more requests since then. This is out of around 120 campers. Pagans are frequently gamers, who'da thunk it? :P (Since the opposite is also tacitly true, well, I did. Five pagans out of twelve players. My numbers are skewed by so many of them being ex-White Wolf gamers.)

Conversion nearly complete on the scenarios - since all of them are largely event driven there really was not that much to convert.

Sending out e-mails with instructions on generating characters for the Pathfinder game, if they don't want pregens. (As a general rule of thumb - no one likes pregens.) Character generation is point buy, and uses the general rules from The Pathfinder Organized Play book, though this is not an organized play scenario. Basically, it allows the characers to start on a pretty much even footing. All characters start at 2nd level, 1000 GP starting funds, a cap on 500 to be spent on any one piece of equipment.

The Call of Cthulhu characters are also going to be point buy, all else straight out of the book. Equipment limited to what is likely to be with them at the time. (So the medical type will have the gear available in 1929 to keep a patient alive - someone has to try to keep Bishop alive in the night*.)

The Auld Grump
* In the game where one character was trying to kill the others, it was the doctor who was up to no good. He poisoned Bishop during the day.

Okay... that was freaky. I was at Wendy's eating a Baja salad when some total strangers came up and said 'Hey! You're [Real Identity Redacted for Reasons of National Security]! Your running the game at the retreat next week! We've heard so much about your games!'

Apparently, I have a... reputation. :?

Ego building, but freaky. We talked a bit about the game, and they ran to the car to get their characters for approval.

I forgot to ask who they had heard of me from, or how they recognized me in a restaurant. Is the retreat handing around photos or something?

Not the first time this has happened to me, but still freaky. :P

The Auld Grump, also freaky, Levan Polkka has just started playing at Border's.... now it's going to take days to get it out of my head.

Heh, the freaky continued on the way home.

I was carrying my strawberry Kula in my hand when the wind freshened, and the cup began letting forth the sighs, moans, and cries of the damned.

The girl in the supermarket parking lot asked me if my cup was... screaming. I replied 'you know how it is with these damned soul smoothies, they taste great, but they're noisy as all Hell....' :P

For those who want to try replicating this experience, the cup was a large Kula from Borders, about 3/5 empty, with a domed lid. Held so that one side of the cup was pretty much straight up and down. Wind was maybe 15 MPH.

I don't know if that was a good omen, a bad omen, or it was just raining frogs....

Ugh, up late last night going over character submissions - 10 out of 13 have emailed them in. :)

Three witches, two Wizards, one bard, two rogues (well, one rogue and one rouge  ), a ranger, and a paladin. A very magic heavy, skill heavy, healing light party so far.

Jackie will be showing up this evening, then tomorrow it is off to Rangeley. Spending that night in the bunkhouse, setting up the tent on Friday. (The room that I will be bunking in is going to be where the games are held.)

The Auld Grump, last time the game was run under an awning - when the wind blew the character sheets went everywhere.

More awake now, for the moment at least.

For me, at least, the whole thing felt a whole lot like running games at summer camp might feel. lots of folks interested in the game, had I been running three games a day I could easily have filled them. There were just plain a lot of gamers.

There was also a lot less nudity this time around, and that nudity which was there was mostly skinny dipping at the ponds. (Trust me, this was a good thing - 90% of people look better with their clothes on, thank you.)

There were also a lot more kids. It just felt more like a... family thing, I guess.

It was also a good deal less religious than last time, more like a pagan camp out than a religious retreat. Though I did get into a nice discussion with some CMs, about Cornelius Agrippa, and whether sigils are properly mnemonics, foci, constructs, or merely another means of applying name theory. I did not take part in the smoke lodges, drumming circles, or dawn greetings, so it also probable that I avoided what religion was there.

I have already been asked if I am available next year.

And, for the first time ever, I managed to wake up in time to make breakfast for Jackie. Jackie is a morning person, and I... am not. I made her baked eggs in bread bowls, with pepper jack cheese and jalapenos, sour cream, and salsa. (Baked eggs are ridiculously easy to prepare, infinitely modifiable, and are something that I can share with my lacto-ovo girlfriend. Me, I put the omne in omnivore....)

The games themselves went very well, despite having way too many players. (I may cap the games at eight next year.) I ended up running Pathfinder for both games, Call of Cthulhu with thirteen players would have been extremely unwieldy. Both groups managed to finish their scenarios, though I did end up going overtime on almost every session. (The exception was the last game - which had to rap for the midnight bonfire.)

And I ended up in the bunkhouse after all, sharing space with my game stuff. I have to say that I was treated very well, and while I knew less than half the folks there everyone knew me.

Anyway, time for bed.

The Auld Grump, now 90% less stinky than last night!

Nyah - in all honesty I don't do dungeons much at all, reversed or otherwise. And something like that... no thank you. Remember - they had a total of fifteen to eighteen hours of play.

Plus, I want the PCs to be heroes, not monsters, not villains, but the guys in the white hats (and I don't mean stormtroopers!).*

I chose the scenarios that I ran pretty much because I like them, and had not run them in a very long time. (The opening of my steampunk espionage game is another that I am likely to run again.)

The first group had A Tree Grows in Aidentaugh, where heresy and witchcraft are a major theme. And three of the adventurer's were themselves witches.

Day the First:

The opening is fairly standard, on the road, goblin attack, message on the goblins ordering an ambush, but lacking details. Certainly the goblins were not prepared for thirteen hardy adventurers. The fight was brutal but short, and the lack of dedicated healers really made itself felt. All the witches were at half hit points or less, the wizards were pin cushions, and the rogue, bard, paladin, fighter, and rangers were pretty much undamaged. Twenty some odd goblins were dead by the end, while the rest fled. (Thirty two goblins, including an adept and some leveled ranger types.)

The purpose of that battle was three fold - familiarize folks with the rules, especially any changes between 3.X and Pathfinder; damage the party so that holing up in town for a while seems like a good idea; and that note. That note is actually a break point - if the team had mentioned the note later on it would have prevented a major plot point from happening - but they assumed that the party was the group that was supposed to get ambushed, and that someone was out to get them.

When they got into town a man was about to be hanged for the crime of witchcraft - when he started pleading his defense he was gagged, and the noose dropped over his neck, the hooded hangman taking up the lack in the rope, and preparing to hoist him up the gallows tree. (Yeah, the old, slow form of hanging. Had they not managed to delay the hanging they would have seen the hangman jump up and grab the convict, dropping his full weight on the man's neck, breaking it. Oddly enough, this was mercy on the part of the hangman.)

They managed to stall the hanging, the paladin using his association with the church to make legal points. (I have to admit that the guy playing the paladin was one of the best I have seen - his paladin even took ranks in Knowledge [Law]. High Int, Cha, and Wis, middling Str and Con, and clumsy as a goat in boots.)

The Baron came into town in time to completely put a stop to the hanging, and to remove the right to high justice from the local priest. His eldest son called the PCs aside and paid their stay at the inn, buying them all rounds. For some reason the team decided that he was trying to pump them for information, and neglected to tell him about the note they had found on the goblins. Even after he made a writ for a bounty on the slain monsters.

He also let them know that the baron had avoided coming to the town for three years following a drought. Had he shown up the town would have been required to pay him all the back taxes, so he had waited until a good harvest before paying a call. He would have put it off another year, but the town had had eight hangings in as many months, with the Church claiming the lands of those hanged for the crimes of witchcraft, sorcery, and heresy. The priest had been installed in his position for less than a year, and was from the monastery where his younger brother was an initiate.

The next morning the baron and his troupe headed off to the next village on their route, to collect taxes and dispense justice.

Because the team did not tell them about the note the baron, his son, and all his men were ambushed by goblins at nightfall. All were killed....

The Other scenario is titled The Return, and involves wreckers, a corrupt church, and the vengeful dead.

The group was replying to a notice that was on the board in a fairly distant town, heading for the lovely seaside town of Raven's Reef, at the mouth of the River Sevren. En route they were also attacked, but managed to drive the bandits off with little difficulty. (Unlike the other group they had plenty of healers - four clerics.) The only purposes in this case was to get the team some loot and, again, familiarize them with the combat system.

The weather turned very nasty for them on the road as they neared the area that they hoped was near the town. Lightning, thunder, hail in the early storm, and turning to freezing rain as the storm freshened. They could see a light in the distance, possibly the town, when they heard the unmistakable sound of a ship breaking upon the reefs below.

In the distance a loud bell began ringing, and ahead they could see and hear combat and murder, as a group of armed men attacked the sailors on the doomed ship. They made their way to a narrow trail that crept down the cliff. Narrow, and icy.

The mules balked, refusing the uncertain footing, and the team left the mules lightly hobbled as they crept slowly down the path. It was a good thing that they had roped themselves together, because about half of the required Climb tests were failed. (Three tests each, fortunately the failures weren't clumped too badly.) The team managed to forget about the mules until I reminded them at the next day's game.

The PCs piled in, too late to save most of the sailors, but preventing the looting of the ship. As the ringing of the bell faded so too did the light that they had taken for the town die out.... They managed not to kill two of the wreckers too badly (negative hit points, but stabilized), so they camped as best they could in the lee of a bend in the cliff.

In the darkness and the storm something managed to creep into their camp and slit the throats of the two prisoners. Something that paralyzed the guards that the team had set on the prisoners, but took the time to drag cover over them against the now departing storm. It could have killed them, but left them alive, able to see and hear, but not move. Then that something climbed up the icy cliff like a spider, carrying the corpse of one of the prisoners over its shoulder, climbing with only one arm and its bare feet, leaving the camp unguarded until morning....

* I did run a semi-pseudo-sorta goblin game for Birthright, once upon a time. They were infesting a paladin's lands, and running around trying to be the good guys. A running joke was that the paladin regent's portrait in his hall had him face palming.... They may have been bad at being good, but they really were trying, and the paladin definitely found them so. :P

I got the invite for this year today - they are raising the amount they are paying me.

It feels oddly mercenary to me - but the folks were really happy last year, and apparently told the management of the retreat as much.

I will bounce steampunk off of them for one of the games, I have a few ideas for the other. :)

Short choppy sentences.

They are fun.

What the heck is with these folks e-mailing me late at night?

All the slots are filled, four months before the retreat. I will be going over the list, seeing if any of my players are on the lists. Though this year none of them have been in my planned scenarios, though some of their kids have.

I may do some more crunching, and bouncing ideas out there - my current plan is fairly sandboxy this time around, for one of the two at least. That one is getting Heggler's Point, with a new scenario available, based on a RAFM scarecrow mini -

A body, disguised as a scarecrow, tied to the supports. Finding and burying him is part of laying a ghost to rest.

The Auld Grump

And we came to the Isle of Witches and heard their musical cry —
' Come to us, O come, O come ' in the stormy red of a sky
Dashing the fires and the shadows of dawn on the beautiful shapes.
For a wild witch naked as heaven stood on each of the loftiest capes.

And a hundred ranged on the rock like white sea-birds in a row,
And a hundred gamboll'd and pranced on the wrecks in the sand below,
And a hundred splash'd from the ledges, and bosom'd the burst of the spray,
But I knew we should fall on each other, and hastily sail'd away....

Not really related - I just didn't want to start another [My Player's Keep Out] thread.

Getting together with folks tomorrow in order to (dum dum dah!) generate a character so I can actually get to (gasp!) play!

A smaller game, five players, counting the GM. First level characters, Pathfinder books only, but some 3PP and the archetypes from APG are acceptable.

I... have no idea what I want to play. I am kind of torn, part of me wants to play a paladin, part of me wants to default to my standard choice of wizard, and part of me wants to do a Detective bard. Aside from Prestige Classes multiclassing in Pathfinder is not all that appealing.

And the GM wants me to meet with him before the session, I fear that he is up to something.... (He loved the scenario with a ringer for my Steampunk game.) This is the main reason for the My Players warning. If it turns out that I am a ringer, or the like.

Why do I feel skittish....? I got to play in a game just two months ago.... (And more than a year before that....)

Okay, not a ringer - my wizard is a member of a secret society, comprised mostly of wizards, paladins, and clerics. Basically a means to pass missions and/or information to the party. :) I am good with that.

Jen has asked me to paint an embarrassing miniature for her Summoner character in the game -

A Freebooter Chaos Sorceress, with a Games Workshop Daemonette as her Eidolon.

Scary how much I have missed that. I am glad we seem to have gotten back to her teasing me. (Odd considering my panic a whiles back.) She finds it amusing that I can be blushing like a schoolgirl, but responding in kind as my character at the same time. (Another skill learned in parochial school.... :P )

Not going to be an easy conversion - she wants her summoner and the eidolon to look mischievous, not evil.

So, a head transplant is needed, the hair is going to cause problems, where it attaches to her coat. So, whatever head I go with will end up with enough hair to hide the marks on the coat. I will start by looking through Reaper miniatures by Werner Klocke (same sculptor, different company). One problem is that Klocke's minis tend to look angry. A tuck of the lips will do for the eidolon coming out of the cloak.

So far I am looking at:

She may want this figure as an alternate, in the event I use that head.

Be a pain to redo the hair after removing the hands, but my favorite.

Hair won't be a problem.... I may pick up this one myself, for use as a witch.

Either elf or human will do, the character (need to learn her name) is a half elf. The final choice will be hers, of course. I suspect that it will be either the witch or the barmaid.

Three different versions of the eidolon - two arms, ending in pincers, pincers and wings, and four arms, two with pincers, and wings. So, I will be using up a bunch of plastic Daemonettes for this job. The first is the version she is starting with, and the wings won't show until fifth level. Technically she gets to completely redesign her critter at every level, more if she takes the transmogrify spell. But mostly she wants a Daemonette, so....

I got an e-mail from the GM, he wants me to play the paladin instead of the wizard. Two reasons - the paladin will be the only frontline combatant in the party, and the paladin also had better stats.... (Part of the reason I went with the wizard - the paladin has a sixteen, a seventeen, and an eighteen, and no stats below twelve. Rolled with the GMs dice, right in front of him. So, I went for the wizard who's highest stat was Intelligence with a sixteen and an eight in wisdom. For some reason the GM disagrees.... :P ) I still belong to the same semi-secret society. (Folks know it exists, and it has secret codes, handshakes, both public and hidden meeting places....)

The GM wants me to come up with an emblem for the society, I suggested a rose covered cross, given the direct ancestor of the idea. More seriously, I then came up with the idea of a rose in a pentacle with four smaller roses - three on the upper arms of the pentacle, the fourth at the groin of the lower arms.

Ideas?

Scribe's head it is for the miniature, and she likes the idea of swapping to fairy wings the thing coming out of the cloak. She was originally thinking Daemonette, but is now leaning towards 'Nymph'.

So, she may not want the daemon crab claws either. We'll see. If she doesn't want them then I may direct her to Otherworlds Miniatures for a winged nymph.

If I get two I might be able to swap the body coming out of the cloak as well. :) (The joys of trying to remove the evil from an obviously evil miniature....)
