It's placement toward the end of the year is also a good time to reduce inventory in preparation for taxes. Old stock gets taxed, hold it for another year and it gets taxed again.
Taxes can lead to some... odd... contrivances. For example, the Mansart roof came to popularity because rooms above the bottom of the roof were considered attic, and attics weren't taxed.
