Grump, I am so pleased that you mum had such a fruitful life and one that allowed her to see the generations grow - and the sorrow is mine that you didn't get to talk to her one last time.... but then again there isn't really one last time; is there? Thinking of you but I know you should be ok with yourself and your stead with your mum. Lord Abaddon of Wormwood |

I'm sorry for your loss, Grump. I know you don't consider yourself religious, but I share this with you as I have with many others. Trust in the Lord, not in the strength of your understanding. Acknowledge Him in everything you do, and He will guide your life. Prov. 3:5-6, paraphrased I hope it helps, and I'm praying for you & yours. |

The funeral was today. It went much better than the one for my father, the preacher actually having asked questions about my mom, and knowing what he was talking about. My mother built her life of people, and there were a fair number present, including my fourth grade teacher, and some of her neighbors for thirty eight years. Afterwords... I had forgotten that I was the only nonsmoking nondrinking person in my family. (Which, in all honesty, is probably why I don't drink or smoke. I limit my drinking to perhaps a six pack over the course of a year, and I do not smoke at all.) I met my nephew for the first time, an upright young man. He looks to be the sane one in his generation, as I was in mine. We had a nice conversation about the Franco-Prussian War, and the follies of Wilhelm II. I was also surprised to realize that I am the tallest member of my family, something that has been true since my great grandfather passed away in 1970. At five foot eight it is very strange to be the tall one. My brother's hair is whiter than my own, though he is six years my junior. To make it more noticeable my hair is currently growing in dark at the roots. (Just to taunt me, I think. I would not mind having white hair.) I still remember the shock earlier this year, when I looked in the mirror and suddenly realized that I had my father's hair. Until that moment I had always thought that I looked more like my grandfather. The Auld Grump |
