You make several good points, Zenguy, and I certainly agree with you on the dangers of overusing GM crops. Nonetheless, if a GM crop can improve yields by even a few percent, that can translate into many more people getting enough to eat. According to a study summarizing 49 peer-reviewed publications on the topic [1], many developing countries see even larger gains from GM crops. Specifically, they find that crop yields are increased by an average of 29%, although the only food-crops looked at were corn and soybeans. Unfortunately, a developing country is also far more vulnerable to the disastrous side effects that you've enumerated.
While I agree that we need to find a better way to manage our global food supply, there are definitely people who presently depend on GM crops to have enough to eat.

Thank you for your posts, Zen. I had not the energy to expand upon my belief about a global famine. My health hasn't been too good lately, but that aside there is also a few other elements at play as well as mono-crops, soil depletion due to tremendous overuse of pesticides. I'm sure you are aware of them as well.
I'll state them though. Our biodiversity is diminishing at an alarming rate. This is extremely dangerous. The state of war in so many parts of the world. How can you grow food amid the decimation of farming villages as in Africa. Also the lost of local food supply due to global trade as in India and many other countries. The supply of food cannot be dependant on global trade as it is now. The system is prone to failure. Last but not least, the increasing population on this planet is not sustainable.
The cost of food is rising to the point of great despair for many. Even in this country semi trucks of food have been high-jacked. It is a very disturbing signal of the possible rise of a black market in food.
Most of our farm land supports four major crops and most of the corn is for ethanol, not human consumption.
It is one blunder after another ... very short sighted.
We need to plant gardens. So many do not know how anymore. We need to collect seeds, and learn to harvest our own seed.
Enough for now ... I'm tired again.
Thank you all for your comments. And again thank you, Zen, for picking up the ball when I couldn't.

It is great to have a high performing food supply system. But not when the cost is a reduced ability to absorb disruptions that can lead to mass deaths.
While the systems that control food allocation are full of mechanisms for optimizing profitability, they are sadly deficient when it comes to mechanisms for ensuring food security. In a world facing inexorable trends of population growth and loss of arable land, this is going to become an increasing problem.
All this, while an estimated 1/3 of current food production goes to waste (, Gustavson et al, 2011).
If only the effort that is being put into creating GM oligopolies were being put into:
a) improving the utilization of our current production; and
b) applying preexisting techniques for improving the utilization and sustainability our arable land resources.

Our culture of limited food selection is nothing new. It in fact has always been the basis of our civilization. Pigs, Chickens, Cows, Wheat and Rice... Am I missing anything? While many mass produced foods are 'bland', I don't see a lot of people lining up to spend 2X to 4X as much more for more appropriate varieties. I also don't see a lot of people going out of their way to even find farm fresh ingredients.
While I don't personally like GM foods and so on, I feel that much of the opposition is unfounded fear. Most of the ethical\biological concerns are in fact addressed upfront by the scientists doing the work.
Furthermore, one step back from GM... is accelerated cross pollination which is on the rise. Scientists or even just farmers cross pollinate species which otherwise would not be able to do so. Like Peruvian Rice plants from dry high altitudes with standard more common to produce a plant which needs less water. No license or government intervention is required to do this at all, and I guarantee it is just as dangerous as GM foods. (Unlocking dangerous genetic codes, and the like.)
My only concern is that pretty all of our present society is based on cheap energy. With oil and gas squarely at odds with green movements, and global warming, I feel that there will be an unpleasant reckoning coming.
In the mean time... I leave you with this pictorial list of First World Problems;

Sorry for raising this thread from the dead. I was looking through my history trying to find something and this topic name stuck out. It hit home to me currently with my diagnosis of ulcerative colitis last year and my most recent flare up since Christmas. So all the debunked Malthusian theories aside; let’s talk taste again =)
TL;DR – watch “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” on NetFlix
I've taken it upon myself to drastically alter my diet. Despite all my well educated doctors telling me "there's no science" to prove your diet has any significant bearing on your chronic diseases. The anecdotal evidence I've been reading says otherwise. I trust my doctors... I take my pills... but I can't deny that the pills stopped working. Of course their solution is different pills. Agan I can't deny they effectiveness; they DO work... but for how long? What happens when all of them stop working? Just pray they come out with a new pill by then? You know what… I’ll take my chances with a lack of peer reviewed, published, scientific studies and chart my own course with the help of people who have been living with colitis for decades. I think they are on to something the scientists will just have to catch up on here soon.
Right now I'm taking under advice of my doctors: • 2 500mg sulfasalazine 3/day (for ulcerative colitis) • 10 mg licinopril 1/day (for IGA nephropathy) • 4 100mg prednisone 1/day (to try and put this UC flare up into remission) • 1 800mg hydrocortisone suppository 1/day thank god =P (again for the flare up)
• 3 800mic folic acid 1/day (to offset the bad mojo of sulfasalazine) • 1 1200mg calcium + vit.D (to offset other pills and lack of dairy)
These I take because I want to: • 1 probiotic 1/day • 1 aloe gel cap 1/day • 1 B6+B12 complex as needed (not drinking caffeine anymore) • 1 ginseng as needed (not drinking caffeine anymore)
OK so to the diet... and hopefully circle this back to taste =) This isn't a diet to lose weight... this is a diet to live well. I actually need to gain some weight back ( crazy I know ) because I was losing 10 lb / month from blood loss and malabsorbtion due to the flare up. I weigh less now than I did senior year in high school; it was getting downright scary. Thankfully I’m doing much better now but still a ways to go.
I absolutely refuse to consume: • Diary - I don't know if I'm lactose intolerant, allergic, or what but this is just poison for me. This has been very tough for my wife. She’s a wonderful cook and anyone who knows good food knows that taste often comes from dairy: Cheese, cream, butter, etc. • Caffeine - It stimulates everything... including my digestive track... which is already greased lightning so I don't need any more stimulation here.
Things I'm trying to minimize to as little as possible: • Highly processed and refined foods - This is like... everything... at a grocery store. Thankfully we've come a long ways and now there's whole sections in local stores to suit this choice however it's not how typical Americans process, cook, or consume food anymore so it's very hard to do this. There are a few stores now dedicated to this but man is it expensive. Refined white flour is basically sugar and it's the base of so many processed food. Thankfully there’s one part of every grocery store that’s been there forever…. Produce! I live off this stuff now and my wife has been adapting wonderfully with her cooking. • Sugar - Basically it does nothing good for you. It requires your body to use other resources to process and eliminate it. It makes the pH balance of your gut acidic, breeding bad bacteria, squelching good bacteria, leads to chronic diseases, and highly addictive on top of it all. I lived off caffeine and thought it would be so hard to stop using... little did I know. I don't sit up at night craving caffeine... I do for sugar though! This stuff is sooooooo addictive. I used to consume crazy amounts of sugar in food and drinks. I've been very good at almost eliminating it but man is it tough. Oh and it's like in everything =P So how do you sweeten things without sugar; like oatmeal? Honey and agave nectar but in moderation. Especially agave… it’s very potent and a little goes a long way. Some may know it’s still basically fructose but think of this… for oatmeal I would usually add a couple tablespoons of white sugar and milk to make it taste good. Just 1 tablespoon of honey or only a half teaspoon of agave is all I need so in the end I’m consuming much less and it tastes better! • Potatoes – I haven’t done as much research on this as sugar and processed / refined foods so take this with a grain of salt. It’s also rather specific to inflamed bowl disorders too so may not apply to you. I did find some interesting studies and science basically saying it’s not good for your bowels. Particularly the lining; it tends to thin it out. Also think about nearly every way we consume potatoes now... pretty much falls into the other categories like processed/ refined, smothered in dairy, etc.
What does this all have to do with taste? Food tastes better now! Not just that I’m eating better food that tastes better… which is part of it. Tastes I’m quite familiar with from foods that haven’t changed taste even better. While doing all my research I came across several articles and peoples testimony about taste. I wasn’t really looking for it but it just kept popping up as related information. Basically the idea is that eating all this processed, refined, food that’s filled with sugar, salt, fat, highly refined ingredients, and chemicals you can’t pronounce makes natural, unprocessed, food taste… bad. Even now when my will fails me and I eat something I know I shouldn’t only find it doesn’t taste that great and I think “was that worth it?”
While reading and researching I couldn’t help but feel early on that all I’ll be able to eat is bland, mushy, “healthy” food. What a totally depressing thought. Food is one of the few things we enjoy every single day, several times a day. Lots of stupid and misinformed articles about inflamed bowl disorders (from some very prominent names like WebMD and LiveStrong I should add!) reinforce this tragic idea as well… they tell you to eat simple, bland, mushy, food. Not only is this flat out wrong but who would ever stick to a diet like that?! It doesn’t have to be that way. It takes a little more effort but the results are amazing. Some things are crazy simple too!
One quick example is to make a little pouch out of tinfoil and put a frozen tilapia fish fillet in it. Scoop on a tablespoon or three of your favorite salsa, black beans, and corn. Wrap it up, throw it on the grill, and cook to perfection. From prep to table it was about 30 minutes, tasted great, and the left overs were even better! By the next day the salsa had soaked into the fish and once it was reheated it was AMAZING! The beans fill you up, the mix of it all tastes wonderful, and you don’t feel guilty eating 2 or 3 pouches =)
I regularly make smoothies now. Low sugar soy or almond milk, some frozen fruit of your choice (try to find stuff with no sugar added), an un-frozen banana, throw in a few tablespoons of frozen spinach, and blend to perfection! There’s lots of recipes online but honestly you just kinda figure it out. A cup or two of frozen fruit, 1 banana, and a cup or two of the milk. If it seems to think and isn’t blending well just pour in another half cup of milk and try again. Sometimes I have to add milk a couple times but in the end it comes out great. You really don’t even taste the spinach; it’s a clever way to sneak in some green super food awesomeness =) Also a great way to get your kids to eat something healthy; they ASK FOR IT! Yes…. My kids ASK me to make them something they KNOW has spinach in it! These are the same kids that won’t eat more than 3 baby carrots even though they have butter and honey on them =P
OMG do I love salads now. Especially fresh spinach leaf as the base. Throw on some dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, and a vinegar based dressing…. Amazing. Takes like 2 minutes to make, you can eat a grip of it, and tastes vundabar! My wife made quiche without dairy and it was stellar! Crazy talk? Nope! She used soy / almond milk instead of cream. No cheese necessary. Stuffed it full of sautéed mushrooms, zucchini, onions, asparagus tips, with fresh raw spinach. She used a premade crust and I didn’t eat that because it was highly processed and refined but that didn’t matter… I wasn’t eating it for the crust… I was eating it for everything else and it… was… awesome!
So a lot of this bland tasting food could actually be a function of your current diet. Go clean, get off this other junk, and in less than a month I bet your taste buds will have changed just like mine. In less than 3 weeks I noticed it and wasn’t even trying to look for it.

Interesting. There's a lot more talk nowadays about how diet plays into everything from health to personality.
I'm curious. You mentioned using soy or almond milk in place of milk. I, too, am lactose intolerant and have to use one of those alternatives. I've heard a LOT of negative things about what soy does to your body, though. Have you heard the same or found any refutation of that?

My wife does far more research on this then I do, but everything I have been led to understand is that Soy in regulated amounts is fine.
The problem is that a lot of pre-packaged or quick foods contain soy when you don't expect it. Same as with sugar and salt. So we are getting far more soy then we think and that is what many believe can cause the problem.
The hard scientific studies I've seen show some potential for problems, but there has it been a solid link between human soy consumption and problems.
It's a tough problem because there are so many other factors involved in human studies, that any long term study on the food we eat has a really hard time showing direct responses between a specific food and anything else.

Food in America stopped being Food and is "Food Like"... unless you purchase naturally grown foods. Certain Cheese' are no longer Cheese, but "Cheese Like"... See the below link for "Sugar, Salt, Fat".
I've lost 70lbs by changing to eating organic foods only, and stopped eating mostly animal based proteins. 1/3rd of my diet is animal based and 2/3rds is now plant (non-GMO) based. I'm eventually going to get to a 90/10 mix, where 90% of my intake is plant (non-GMO) based and 10% is what ever else.
More great reads on Food:
Sorry but the wikipedia article was deleted. So linking via Amazon.
(Great read even if you think it's Bullshit because it's got the history of Wheat in it). Also the that goes along with this.
Finally (quotes a lot from The China Study): . Great resource for Super-nutrient rich foods.
When I was growing up, I was told I could be anything I wanted... so I became an asshole!

It's interesting, I've been eating mostly vegetarian for well over a year now. When I do eat meat it's been locally grown humanely raised meat that we cook ourselves at home, or a little bit of fish.
Due to some odd circumstances, I just had to eat a few different things that I normally don't. The first was part of a hamburger at a "normal" restaurant. It used to be one of my favorites and now I found it to be a greasy disgusting mess, with little if any flavor complexity.
The second was for my kids birthday, we have a tradition that they can pick anything for dinner and I'll make it. So I made some steaks, brown rice, fettuccine Alfredo, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cranberry spinach salad. The steaks were nice and medium rare, and most of the guests loved them.
Honestly the steaks were very good but I discovered something very interesting. I wanted the vegetables more then anything else, they had more flavor (and were way better) than the meat or the home made Alfredo sauce.
That trend has continued: I find now that most everything processed or commercial tastes odd. Either greasy, salty or overwhelmingly sweet. It makes it quite hard to eat out, but home cooked food sure takes good.
