From the banebeasts i think the chimaera is one of the best sculpt i've ever seen! a bit off scale for D&D..... but it tempts me.... my precious! |

Reaper had some... interesting things to say about the cost of resin. Small figures (like people) cost a lot more to make in resin than they do in metal. Large figures (like ogres, giants, and dragons) cost a lot less to make in resin than in metal. I am not at all certain how that works - I believe them, I just don't know why that is how it goes. Wow, it did not make it to GenCon - if the online inventory is accurate, I just bought the last one. (Actually, it being the last one is why I bought it - if I had waited....)  I wish that this had not been limited to 250 - I think that they could have sold a lot more, especially with the Pathfinder pirate based adventure path being the newest releases from Paizo. The Auld Grump *EDIT* still lists it as an August release - so there may still be hope. |

Looks like he really was the last one in stock - I do not know if Fantization got any. Very nice model - needs some cleaning with a file - there are three mold lines on the resin body. The body and the wrecked ship that serves as the base are resin - I will be reinforcing the base with brass rod - depending on resin alone to act as the support strikes me as risky. Likewise, I think that I will not glue it to the body - so that it can be taken apart for transport. Very nice fit, aside from some of the tentacles needing their ends trimmed to fit, and the corresponding holes in the resin widened. Each has a slightly different shape, so it is hard to put them in wrong. I am intending to base the colors of the carapace on lobsters - dark green and red. If I could have gotten a second then I might have painted another for a Christmas present. In any event, at some point it is likely that The Maiden is going to be attacked by a giant squid monster. I will not be giving it a sweater and some puppets.... The Auld Grump |

Anyone seen what the Avatars of War 'War-Cast' looks like? They have some harpies coming out, and I am thinking about letting one of my players know so that she can add them to her Dark Elf army. The Kraken miniature is back in the Reaper store, but they only list 11 at the moment. If you want it get it now. The miniature is quite nice, but whether it is $100 worth of nice is debatable - I run a lot of maritime and nautical adventures, so it was a worthwhile purchase for me. The body is about seven inches long, the tentacles, not including the two long ones, add another six squiggly inches. Quite suitable for assaulting the bold seamen aboard The Maiden. The material is a high definition grey resin, lots of detail. I had to remove some very minor mold lines and fill two air bubbles - all were minor, and I could have left the air bubbles as wounds, or even inserted a harpoon into one of them to show this creature as a grizzled veteran. Spaken of kraken - This resin/pewter model has apparently been available from Armorcast since 2008. Nice.... and half the price of the Reaper Kraken. I am still paying off the Bones Kickstarter, so this one will have to wait. Size is described as 'dinner plate' - which brings up an image of dancing octopus in my brain. And I wish that it didn't - If you ever wonder if there is any food that I won't eat, then wonder no more.  I will happily eat hakarl again before ever trying this even once.The Auld Grump, not fond of eating octopus anyway - a teacher had one as a pet, and it was friendly. |

Troll Forged is now making spin cast plastic minis - here are some of their goblins: The sculptors are on their forums. Some good miniatures, some bad, their goblins have lots of personality, from the psychotic characters to the Froude like armored halberdiers. I gather that they also spin for other companies.... The Auld Grump, just what I needed... more completely incompatible goblins that I like....

I often mock the larger Warhammer figures - for the most part I do not like them. But this fellow.... (Image from .) I rather like it – that dragon is a beast, not a wise serpent, but a brute. Grown too large and fat to fly, the wings more often used in threat displays – making the massive beast seem even larger. Perhaps not ferocious, but grown old and complacent as the greatest beast in the mire. And that complacence is not ill placed. The Auld Grump |

Ultraforge is opening shop again - they have some very nice(?) demons. (Or Daemons....) (Images from ) A bit pricey, but BIG. I picked up a bunch when The War Store was clearing them out - when Ultraforge appeared to have gone out of business. Pretty happy with them - I do not have that Plague Daemon, but I have the others. I plan on getting the Plague Daemon and the Daemon Prince when I can afford them. Most used though is this loverly lady - For my game she is Willow Maiden - a treant witch, and most sincerely bad news. So pretty, so innocent, and vengeful evil at her core. She was used in the Elf & Orc War campaign. (The orcs and elves were on the same side - think French & Indian War.) The Auld Grump, kinda want to run that again... I wonder if Brian will want it expanded this year.... *EDIT* That upper demon has alternate hands and heads - so if you do not want a lobster claw then you don't have to have one. Plus, extra pieces for the bits box.... I like the primary head, and the alternate arms.... |
