One for Kevin, I suspect: DF1 and The Guidebook to the Oshalogwa both refer to the Oshalogwa having totem powers - but they don't say what those powers are. What are they, and/or where can I find them? Thanks, Zen |

Hello again ZG! There is no exact list of totem powers that I can give you. As the Races of Arcraetia I supplement shows, Oshalogwan beliefs are very complicated and not always amenable to d20 (or Savage Worlds) translation. Every adult Oshalogwan considers him or herself to be under the guardianship and tutelage of an animal spirit, but that does not mean anything as simple as +1 deflection bonus to AC or the like. Rather, think of the totem spirit as a tool for the DM. The totem animal can send dreams, or sometimes even waking visions, to the Oshalogwan. These are opportunities to give clues or mysteries to player characters, or to let NPCs know a little more than they otherwise would about mysterious happenings (or the plans of PC foes). If your plot requires that the sinister Wicasa-Wakan escape, but the PCs are getting uncomfortably close -- or if you need a way to let your PC Tribal Warriors off the hook when they get in trouble -- let the totem spirit give warning in time. After a great benefit like this, an Oshalogwan would perform a spiritual ritual as soon as possible to earn the continued protection of his totem spirit. Appropriate elements would be consulting an Arendiwane and undergoing a period of solitude, fasting, ritualistic cutting of the flesh (say, 1d6 damage), or prolonged dancing to the point of exhaustion. Again, this is an area for narrative, not hard and fast rules. You'll note in the d20 statistics a class skill for all three Oshalogwans classes: Knowledge (Orenda/Otgon). This represents cultural knowledge of the supernatural. A DM could choose to require rolls on this skill to correctly interpret dreams and visions, or to notice magical "influences" in an area (lingering spells of great power, the presence of demons or outsiders, etc.) Should you allow Oshalogwan PCs of non-Oshalogwan classes, it would be reasonable to give them Knowledge (Orenda/Otgon) as an additional class skill.
