Not sure what is best. I am thinking that due to next week being the start of my spring break, I will be throwing a board game night together next Saturday (the 9th). Is there any way to set it up to have the board game night and our M&M game in the next two weeks?

Here is the breakdown of the next few weekends for me. I am open for gaming around whatever.

Sat. 9th:
Sun. 10th:

Sat. 16th: Board Game Night (could game prior, in theory)
Sun. 17th:

Sat. 23rd: Science Olympiad State Finals competition (all day thing. No game)
Sun. 24th:

Post subject:  Re: Sharn: D&D 4e - Phoenix Area

I'm off for sping break next week as well, but as for the next few weekends...here is what I am looknig at.

Sat. 9th: I could go in for Board Game Night, and maybe even a game prior depending on the start time.
Sun. 10th: Can likely make it work for gaming, but definately not if Sat the 9th is a double.

Sat. 16th: Not going to happy for me.
Sun. 17th: Can likely make work, but not if we game Sun the 10th.

Sat. 23rd: (No game)
Sun. 24th: Nothing known at this point

How about anyone else???

Oh, and below is the case file from the original Innsmouth incedent, which you will all be read into after you are debriefed from your Chamber adventure. Should anyone what to write up their debriefing/report, it would be worth a victory/hero piont for the start of the next game. Otherwise, all options for backstory, villians, associated NPCs, etc are still open. The one expectation I do have, is for at least one complication each next time. I may also post in the next few days a in game list of leads for our heros to follow up (i.e. options for the next possible scene to play.) In the meantime, feel free to send me any feedback you care too.

Case Review
The Innsmouth Incident of 1928
Prepared by:
Dr. P. Moon (Badge #MLRM101)
Project Arrowhead
Department of Internal Security and Investigations

In 1927, Project personnel became aware of probable aberrant activity in the town of Innsmouth, Massachusetts. Resources being limited at the time, a cover story was fed to the U.S. Treasury Department about possible bootlegging in the area. Initial efforts were lax, with no proper investigation until the following year. Two agents were then dispatched to the town and arrived early in the morning. then made a single report in the late evening. This report stated suspicions that the town elders would seem likely culprits behind any illegal activity and that a visit to the local meeting hall appeared to be the next logical step in the investigation. These two agents made no further contact with their home office, and were then found a week later washed up dead several miles down shore. Condition of the bodies prevented a clear cause of death, but homicide by apparent drowning was suspected. Project advisers attempted to intervene at this point, but only succeeded in arranging for the tasking of additional military resources to assist in the Treasury agents in an resulting raid on the town hall.

A combination of special agents, local police, and 30 members of the army forces entered the town after nightfall three week after the original agents sole report from within the town. Of these 38 individuals, six survived the raid on the town. Two later died of wounds suffered during the raid, and one of self-inflicted wounds a week following the raid. Four additional people are unaccounted for too this day, and are presumed dead. Reports taken at the hospital indicate that following the Treasury and police agents entering the town hall, shots were fired. Two agents made it out of the building, and were immediately followed by a group of robed Innsmouth residents including an individual with overt revulsive aspects and an elongated truncheon or small staff. Military personal attempted to subdue this group after they left the town hall, but the central figure emitted an apparent low frequency sound. The sound caused the army units to hold their ground and not advance further, but also resulted in several dozen additional townsfolk to converge on the area. Army squads then opened fire, apparently killing a number of townsfolk who were described as being in a strange stupor, but extremely aggressive. Combined rifle fire was then able to incapacitate at least two of the individuals that had emerged from the town hall but was completely ineffective against the central figure previously described. These robed figures in turn crippled or killed with extreme effectiveness the remaining members of the task force sent to Innsmouth, as witnessed by the fore mentioned survivors. These six managed to make it back to a military vehicle, and retreat from the area.

By the time a larger force was marshaled and surrounded the town almost two days later, a significant portion of the known residents had abandoned the town. This, despite efforts by local authorities to shut down all road access to the area. Attempts to track down these missing townfolk has met with very little results to date. No bodies were recovered, including none from those involved in the raid itself, and the town hall was found burned to the ground. A quarantine was issued through the Project, with all remaining residents detained and moved to detention centers that were quickly constructed. A cover story was easily adapted, with town residents having surprisingly little family outside of Innsmouth and other local towns having previously isolated themselves from their neighbors and not questioning the relocation story provided.

Subsequent to active debriefing of the detained residents, the area off of Innsmouth’s coast know as Devil’s Reef was systematically bombarded by depth charges and the town itself was ceased by the state. The area was then fenced off and then used for Navel research purposes for several years, including housing off sight Project experiments. University involvement with the Project’s experiments on site were terminated following a security violation and resulting incident in 1937. With the onset of WWII, the Navy closed research facilities and used the town as a test fire range. Several warehouse structures and the original town lighthouse were left intact to maintain and monitor the arm tests, but these too were abandoned after the end of the war. It is not clear how authorization was obtained, but these sites have since been leased out, which may present certain lapses in security protocols requiring further investigation.

End Report

It turns out that the board game night won't work this coming weekend for a few of the people I want to invite. It gets pushed to the following weekend.

I haven't had a chance to look over the in-game stuff you just posted, but will try later...maybe tomorrow.

Three possible ways of following up on where our heroes left off....

The Innsmouth Incident has come up again due to Project monitors hitting on a recent auction item. The item was cataloged as a Pacific island tribal icon by the Boston auction house, but a newspaper article’s description bares many common features to the staff/ truncheon witnesses saw at Innsmouth. Given this possible connection, further investigation has been recommended.

Internal Security subsequently has conducted a review of all Innsmouth relevant files and discovered that buildings within the former town’s boundaries were leased out to a civilian company, despite regulations that were suppose to keep the area from being used without Project authorization. A recommendations has been made for a team to investigate this issue further.

There is also concern about a series of four murders in the last two weeks among prominent New England families. Each incident has involved the death of at least one senior family member, with the nature of the crimes all being described as horrific. While theft if a possible motive, there have also been messages left at each crime scene that have gained the attention of Project superiors. In addition to following up on the crimes themselves, possible additional targets have been identified that could be tasked with protection or surveillance teams.

(one personal goal I have the next time would be to also bring in more roll playing aspects into the next game as well...we'll see how that goes).

I can see the benefits of all three:

Option 1: Following the artifact doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Option 2: Fishy paperwork and company ties seems like an intriguing lead.

Option 3: Murder and Investigation is always interesting.

Honestly, I lean toward the murders. It also seems to have some strong RP options as well.

I plan to end this week with chaos:

Thurs: Painting prior to the Imperial Outpost Board Game Night (like 2-10)
Fri: Painting (something like 2-10? I am completely open this day)
Sat: Beer & Board Game Night with a St. Patty's Day vibe - goes way late
Sun: M&M game from 11-5 or 6

This is my personal plan and I welcome as many of you as would like to join in. Let me know if you have other days/times, but right now, that is what I intend on partaking in.

I'm good for Thursday, though I will not be free until around 3. I'm good for however late that day though.

Friday, I'm free earlier in the day, but need to be back home around 3pm.

Sat and Sunday are now both out for me, just too much going on on.

Friday before three will not likely work for me. We are hoping to pick up some free Science Center culture passes tomorrow and use them Friday due to the event(s) going on that day. I guess we can play it all by ear.

If you want to get together tomorrow at any point to make up for your crazy weekend, let me know.

I had this suggested to me. I would love to add it to the list of systems to try, bringing our list to:

Savage Worlds
Dragon Age
Dungeon World

Post subject:  Re: Sharn: D&D 4e - Phoenix Area

So I've spent the morning looking over the available stuff for Dungeon World and Dragon Age systems. Here's my thoughts on how they would work for the next fantasy setting game. I do like each system, but can foresee major differences in how games will go depending on which system. I did not look back at Savage Worlds yet, but I would expect it to be an alternative to Dragon Ages...with the advantage of more rules/resources being avaliable so less time would need to be spent on development to run things but the down side of more complexity.

Dragon Age-Mechanically different than D20/D&D, but mostly just due to it being a spin off using 3d6. The demands on the person running it will be very similar to most fantasy games out there . The set up has 3 classes, so long term flexibility with characters may be an issue. Actually, since it is basically a variation on most D20 game set ups (i.e. similar attributes, actions, and rules) you might have issues with long term flexibility in general. Therefore you are doing a lot of customizing rules and development of rules to allow any unique aspects of a setting. Overall complexity of the rules are pretty standard/moderate. On the plus side, the stunt die mechanic offers an interesting "critical" type feature for thematic success to combat.

Dungeon World-Mechanically VERY different than the stuff we have played for fantasy. This is essentially a prose based system, which means that while it is rules light the rules that do exist work differently than a d20/traditional rpg. It looks like all the same components are there as traditional D&D, but superimposed on a prose system so how the game feels/plays is different. Running it will demand a lot more narration and acting as mediator of events than anything else we have played. As an example, the default system has the person running the game never rolling dice and there are no turns or rounds. Play is all about descriptions and choices, with only the players ever having to make rolls (and rolls not always even needed) and the person running the game setting up the challenges around the characters as well as how the situation is impacted by the players choices. Besides working out target numbers and setting up a few mechanics, there is not a lot of mechanics in planning out the game. The person running the game is instead going to be describing the environment and pressing players to make choices or giving up something when their abilities fall short. Customizing to fit unique aspects of a setting I think will involve more of description (in a way more like describing qualities in M&M) than developing rules. You can count it being a prose based game as either a plus or minus depending on your expectations. The plus side of this system beyond that is that failed dice rolls/actions have as much to do with what happens as success. What I did not see, and does exist in other prose based systems, is the other side of rules for extra impacts for when an exceptional success happens. If needed, that could easily be house ruled in.

If Paul wants to run the next fantasy game, I would really recommend looking closely at each system and picking whichever one best fits him, his world, the kind of game he wants to foster, and seems the most interesting to him. Picking a system is, to me, a big factor in the kind of game that gets played and needs to be made by the person running it. If he wants to see a test run of each to learn more about them, but does not want to run it himself, I would be comfortable with figuring out a way of doing a one shot of Dungeon World. If someone else wants to do DW or wants to take on a one shot of Dragon Age, that works as well. I'm perfectly happy to keep running M&M in the meantime, or even turning things over for a one shots as needed.

I appreciate you going through and giving a decent overview of each. I fully intended to do so last evening, but found myself ready for bed before delving much further than posting the links that I did.

I see benefits to both and look forward to hearing Paul's thoughts on the matter. In the meantime, I will also volunteer to run a game or two if needed/wanted.

I should be good for the Table Top Day, just not sure what time to head over there.

Any thoughts from anyone about the next day to game besides that?

Sunday is Easter, and I'm not sure how that effects my weekend yet, let alone anyone else's plan.

(by the way, I plan on have Castle Panic and Last Night on Earth in the back of my car at very least on Saturday)

Sunday, being Easter, does mean no game for us. Jennifer and I will have a million and one family events to juggle...well, maybe more like three, but still.

Further than that hurts my head to think about...

Sorry to hear about the family drama. I'm fine with some easy board gaming recreational time.

Easiest for me would likely still be a Saturday or Sunday morning this week, or Sunday of next weekend being manageable at this point. Might be able to do Saturday morning next week, but that is not certain.

A Saturday in the evenning to late could also be workable.
