Course that is modern set specific horror. Not good old fashioned pulp style horror.

I tried something very similiar to this. I was attempting to make a 3d forest that would allow you to put figures among the trees. I did my forest as a series of intersecting straight pieces. But it was not very successful. So I'm really glad someone else is attempting to this type of thing.

I really think that the idea has a lot of potential. And planted fields are a much better starting point. They are even supposed to by placed in nice straight rows.

I can't wait to see some pics. I'd love to have something new to add to my fantasy layouts.

This sounds cool. Even if it's just using the fences from Villageworks, textured to look like corn... it's a great idea and would work really well for the XCom layout I would oneday love to have.

I'm not really replying to myself, more bumping the thread really.

I had hoped to modify the reeds in Skull cove and use that texture for corn... but it really isn't appropriate. Starting from scratch, I don't think I can come up with a convincing corn texture.

For the dirt beneath the corn, the Foliage Yellow from Skull Cove has an excellent farm soil texture, but it's a tiny area with shadows... so impossible to expand to a full 7x7 tile.

Anyone else with more talent than me able to take this kitbash on? The models are easy, it's just the texturing that is a real problem.

I cannot do anything to help with textures. But I'm curious if you worked out the actual measurements. The hieght and space between rows, etc.

When I tried doing my forest I didn't hit apon the correct dimensions for the prop. So I never even worried about the textures.

I wanted to go for a green field, with the yellow tops as the corn is ripening. My plan was to use the model design for the wooden fence from Villageworks, but raise the height to somewhere between 1.75" and 2" (to give a suitable height above a based mini), but hadn't decided for sure. The texture of the wood would be replaced by corn, and the ground would be replaced with a richer soil texure... possibly just a color change on the existing ground to make it more brown...

For spacing, I originally wanted it every 1" but realized it would be very difficult to access minis in that, so I though every 2". Of course, that requires four rows of corn per 7x7 tile, and leave one row of grid on the tile empty, but figured that would be okay.

The advantage to this idea is that it would be easy to use the same corn rows in a 1.5" grid setting, or even bring them slightly tighter together in a gridless setting.

The whole thing could be left open on the edges, or surrounded by a low fence with horizontal beams... which I might make anyway. Alternatively, Bob's white picket fence in his kitbash would work well.

I wish I was more confident with Sketchup... so I could show you what I mean.

I tried doing a sketchup model of what your describing. The rows are scaled for 2" high. Sorry I don't have a fence besides villagework, which I don;t think is right. I think it should be one of those long rough timber fences, like an old ranch fence. But I couldn't find good pic of one so I didn't do a model of it.




I found an image I like better. But it isn't as nice a row shot so I did both.

Heh, that's exactly what I was going for. I did manage to create something similar in Sketchup, but I couldn't make the walls of corn to be paper thin... hard to make them as a thin box, like it would look if you wrapped foamcore. I'm guessing you rotated the drawing area somehow?

The first image is what I wanted (where did you find the texture?) but I would cut away the sky and leave a jagged top to the corn row. Although, it doesn't look bad with sky like that Care to share that texture?

I know it doesn't look as tightly packed as would be ideal, but it has to also be playable terrain, and I think this works just fine. The only thing the image is missing is the feet supports for the corn rows, which would give a raised soil effect close to the cornrows. Probably a half inch tab either side, edged in brown of course.

I do agree that the white picket fence wouldn't really work... but was trying to give options.

I do like the dirt, but with the lighting, it's hard to tell the difference clearly. It looks good in the image... but I'd have to see it side by side with the original to tell just how extensively you changed the coloring.

You are interpreting my words well though... and I really like it so far.

For the fence, you'd need a vertical support every 2 1/3" so that you ended up with a total of four to a 7" tile, with two being in the corners. On one side you might have a gate stetching 2" or 3" in the middle.

For me, I pretty the bright vivid colors of the farmland... but I know not everyone likes that. While I would like the healthy looking corn field, I know some might prefer the heavy sun damaged look... where the corn is mostly a dry tan color and the ground is all dried out as well. For that, the ground could probably be the original Villageworks one.

Yah, the dry/tan colour of decaying corn would look good for teh horror line.

May want to consider some form of bracing in order to keep the corn rows upright. Unless of course you are going for the crop circle look.

I agree about the fences being seperate... sorry if I had implied otherwise.

For supports, there are two ways to go. Firstly, I don't think it really need support, just as you say, so we could leave it as it. Secondly, we could build up a sloping box support running either side, with a dirt texture. That would have the downside of sucking up space for minis to stand on though, so I'm not too keen on that idea.

Oh, BTW, thanks for the tips on Sketchup. From reading your tips, I realized what I'd done wrong... I'd set my default view to 3D without thinking... and that makes it a lot harder to do a vertical thin wall. I'll switch views once I figure out where that setting is

Check that corn photo I linked. If you enlarge it, it has a very good closeup view of the entire plant, soil to sky. The stalks go straight into the ground, no mound.

Is anyone working on a photoshop crop texture?



If you find out how to change the default view let me know. Mine starts off with a top view. For most projects iso is what I want.

If you hold the direction keys its supposed to draw on that plain. It doesn't always work for me though. So I find changing the view to whatever plain I want to work on is more reliable.

No one's done a corn field yet. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
