I just picked up Downtown Abandoned and Downtown Offices, and liked them so much I just grabbed Stucco and Corporate! I'm building these all to fold flat and am curious if everyone uses the internal supports as they are, or has some other way to support the buildings. We usually use paper minis, so weight is not a huge issue. I was thinking of securing the roof with just poster putty and see how it works. The supports go together pretty quickly, but I wasn't fond of them sticking through the roof like they do. I thought about building them without that part as well. |

Right, with the supports as they are presented it's no problem. I'm just thinking of not using those supports at all. |

Really what this boiled down to was time. Although the supports are not difficult to build, they still take time-something which I have very little of. As a test, I left the supports off, and used a little bit of poster putty on the remaining 3 roof tabs. I set a bottle of glue on it overnight. It held just great! |

I've just got my Downtown sets and see the problem with the supports. How about splaying the top of the roof supports so that they do not protrude? An upper level roof could then be simply rested on the splayed ends. If you're building a skyscraper the supports could be fitted as normal, as they will not be seen on the finished model. Just a thought. |

What about just folding the tips at the point where the roof would be? more or less just having a cross that sits under the roof. For miniatures I'd still probably have it protrude just so that the cross doesn't close in on itself and collapse, but for paper miniatures where there is no weight, you may find that does the trick and is fast. |

I made two roof designs: the first is a drop-in and the other is a cap roof which also joins other floors neatly. Both can be removed so the model folds flat. I wish I could explain them clearly but all of my work is in AutoCAD and I have never gotten around to getting a place to dump graphics into either. There is so much more that can be done with the SwiftScenic buildings. Here is an easy way to get some more folding models if you have purchased some of the WWG modern sets (non TLX). Print the buildings (walls) at 86%. That will take them from a 7"sq. base down to a 6"sq. base. Walls will be about 2-5/8" instead of 2" high but wall height should be higher for the industrial and public buildings. You can use the same type of bracing or something else. Mine use a drop in roof and a removable bottom as well as modified SwiftScenic braces. |
