Hard to play a Western game without some kind of transportation! We currently have covered and un-covered wagons, which is great, but it's not exactly a stage coach. I'm looking at using the funeral wagon from Wildwood Grove, but it's still not an 8-person living human transport vehicle.

Also, it would be great to see a Western train. I guess some fantasy sets have some tracks and mine carts, but again... wouldn't mind a steam locomotive, passenger cars, storage cars, etc.

I did actually notice that the other day while showing my girlfriend what's available at WorldWorks. (Incidentally, she really like the Lightning Gun and the Maiden, and wishes there was more stuff like that. She's not so much interested in the rest of the RPG stuff. )

Canadrian, I would love to see your suggestions become a reality. Sadly, I can't see either of them happening soon or indeed, more likely for a long time to come.

I guess I'd start with Mayhem rail if I wanted the geometry and sizing, then use the Western sets or the Maiden for textures? Maybe steal tech for the engine from sci-fi sets?

It really depends on what you want to see in a train set - how detailed, how big is it (can you move figures on bases inside it, or is it lifesized and cramped?), and so on. A 19th century boxcar is 24 feet long, a passenger carriage is 55-60 feet long, and nine feet wide. What's that - 4 inches long by 1.5 to 2wide, and 10 inches long by 1.5 to 2 inches wide? Not gonna be fun to play in. You need to scale up a bit just to get your hand inside, let alone to add the interior detail.

That's a good point. Though let's face it: most of our papercraft stuff isn't going to be a realistic scale anyway. All the Tumbleweed Pass (and I believe also Building Essentials) signed store fronts are 6 inches across - 30 feet at 5 feet to an inch - which is about double the typical width of an actual Old West store according to the Knuckleduster Cowtown Creator. All the WWG stuff appears designed so the buildings are either butted up against each other or placed quite far apart, rather than standard spaces between real-life properties, and there are basically no Deadfall road tiles without boardwalks on them which means everywhere you want road there has to be contiguous boardwalk the whole way. None of this is period-accurate. I tried mapping out my first town in the TLX planner based on my original period-accurate hand-drawn map, and aside from the unavailability of 3-inch building fronts with signs, the town was too huge to fit on my 3'x5' kitchen table. None of this is really criticism though; we play in stylized worlds for the sake of entertainment and practicality.

I think it would be perfectly acceptable to have a 3"-wide train. That way you could have 1" bench props with a 1" isle, use 3" TLX tiles for the floor and do TLX-standard walls and roofs. Now that I think of it, most of this could probably be faked with existing TLX sets and props. The only custom pieces would be wheels (maybe take the wooden cart model, make metal wheel textures, and build it without the bench/crate/hitch, set the TLX train on top), maybe doors, and of course the whole steam engine. And of course links between cars, stepladders to doors... Any other details depending on how detailed you want to go. The engine would be the hardest part for sure.

Next I need to figure out what I'm going to do for a riverboat though. The PCs are going to be on a riverboat before they get to their train journey. Sadly I think I'm going to spend a lot of time in Photoshop and maybe Sketchup making kitbashes.

I've got some work on a TLX train done already - mostly some designs for the cars. Mayhem rail for the tracks is a pretty good start, actually.. I hadn't thought of that.

As for train sizes, I did wind up settling on 3" across, which is about 15 feet. Fortunately there are SOME old cars that get close to that wide - particularly the passenger cars - so it allows some room for interior placement. That really only works for RPG scale.. heroic scale just ain't gonna happen.

Just in case anyone was wondering, Deadfall:SoB has a few roads with no boardwalks :

- Corner tiles, page 8
- Junction tiles, page 10
- Straight tiles, pages 3 and 9

And of course there's the Wilderness tiles for no roads AND no boardwalks.

On the subject of realism, it's basically impossible for us to make terrain that is scaled realistically. We try to focus on making terrain that is reasonably scaled and fun to play games on instead. Realism would be nice but then again in reality we all don't walk around with 6' discs strapped to our feet and can sit down occasionally...

For my Deadlands game I just went to the Local Toys R Us and bought one of the Trains they had works great for a scenery train and has track.

If I want to have them be IN a train, yeah would just use Deadfall TLX floors, and likely kit bash up interior/walls.

Stagecoach, just got a toy from the $1 store, works great.

Small models just don't work that great in Card stock for me...

The wagons and such I got at the dollar store are much better than the ones in Deadfall, no offense I just don't use them the toys work better.

So this set would have no interest for me.

I really don't know how I missed that. Feeling a bit stupid now. I'd like to blame the low-res graphics in the TLX planner software for tricking me into thinking those were wilderness tiles or something, but I don't think I can legitimately shift the blame on this one.

I don't know... wouldn't toys look kinda... "kiddie"? I'd hate to pollute my WWG town with a bunch of stubby, shiny plastic Fisher Price goofy-looking toys.

Depends on what you buy, if you buy "goofy-looking" Fisher Price toys, then yeah that is what they will look like.
This one is one I wouldn't buy or atleast not buy with out a mind to repaint.

The Cowboys are out of scale but 28mm minis look good on the wagons, stage. This isn't a Dollarstore version as I got the ones I have about 4 years ago and have not seen them since, but the size is the same.

No worries, CapnG, I'm not dissing WWG's approach (I love your stuff), It's the age-old problem of playing with models. If you want true scale, you can't really use figures stuck in various poses standing on plinths, they just don't fit.

If I were going to run a game on a train, I'd scale it up to a size I could fit figures onto, and probably cut the walls down for ease of access too. Guncrawl rather than First Light. Or, better yet, do it with TLX or Terraclips so all the walls were 'wild' -- that way I could make the cars closed, and open the ones the players are in...
