Seems there are a lot of requests for various sci-fi settings that have totally different feels.  In thinking about this, I have a question (at length):  With all of these different settings, how would it all integrate?  I like the way Villageworks integrates with Castleworks with Tavernworks with Caveworks with Gothi....but then again, they are all medieval timeline and roughly symetric in context.  however, with sci-fi you have a technological disparity which can heavily influence asthetics.  For instance, in Warhammer 40k, most buildings are monolithic in nature, and very gothic (for the humans anyways) usually made of "ferrocrete" or the like, but sometimes huge metal slabs.  You could use Gothicworks for somem of this.  
  But, the setting for, say the colony in Aliens, is totally different.  That is more along the lines of a modular building designed to be brought someplace in easy pieces, minimal sapce, and provide basic things.
  Then you ahve the good old Megalopolis city structures.  Should we go there?  Some of the published Worldworks sets work here too, but you deffinatly need a "futuristic update" to thinks like the sewers.
   And then you have spacestations.  Are they "fragile little snowflakes of the night", or are they carved from asteroids, underground, etc.
  So I guess what I am asking is; are you going to be creating different genres, or comming up with a more proprietary sci-fi look of your own.
 Either way, I'm sure I'll be happy!

All good questions and its something that me and Paul have talked over at length. Theres no easy answer other than to say that we will be creating model sets with the same modular useablilty as past sets. As far as "sytle" is concerned we plan on hitting a few popular generic sci-fi looks. They'll look familiar but not quite Thats all I can say.

One option to deal with a variety of science fiction styles may be to produce a few generic "framework" sets. Then provide additional customizing sets that include features such as glue-on panels and structural items to provide the desired look. I can see where this might be used to economically provide a framework set that can be customized for Warhammer 40K, Alien, Bladerunner, or Star Wars or a framework that can be customized for Star Trek or Star Wars. (And a variety of looks in-between.)

By the way, is there any general time frame for when a science fiction set might be produced? I have nearly all of the medieval sets but they don't do me a lot of good since my gaming is primarily Star Wars and Traveller.

Paul and I can barely contain our sci-fi enthusiasm but we are taking our time with the research and development end of things before we get into building. We are both 70's-80's sci-fi kids and we plan on rocking this genre and doing it right! Cant wait. No firm dates as of yet but you can bet that you will see some sci-fi sets out before mid year (perhaps sooner).

if you want the mass market, then look to Warhammer 40k for period and feel. since your gonna put sheets in stores one big issue for 40kers is MONEY, decent terrain costs alot. I believe you have the potential to triple sales if you tap into this flavor of the Sci-fi genre. But that is just a suggestion...


(note, 40k sales are high, miniatures sell, so do scenery!!!)

I demand a single set that encompasses all sci-fi-genres.  DEMAND, I tell you!  The set should include indoor, outdoor, and undergorund pieces as well as furniture, vehicles, and completely 3D miniatures (at least 3,000 variations of figs, including all necessary minis for Star Wars, 40K, Star Trek, Alien, Predator, etc).  This set should allow me to re-create every scene from every sci-fi novel and movie ever made in exacting detail, including vast expanses of desert from the Dune novels, and there should be a cool large 4 point throwing doo-hickey for my character to throw ala Krull.  All models should be self-assmebling, and self-constructing and you should include directions on how to make the paper models arrange themselvs and store themselves with space efficiency in mind.  In fact, models should materialize and de-materialize on command.  The whole set should be due for delivery by tomorrow, and it should retail for about $9.95.

Ok, now that the silliness is out of the way, I can't wait to see the great stuff you have in store for us, Denny!  Keep up the great work!

Pardon me..

I am a big believer in minis in game. As some of my players need to understand the lay of the land. I do however have a way of limiting the extra environments. select a type of terrain.. as in Desert, (Tatooine, Vulcan.. so on) and make a generic design for that area.

I also know that if place-ables are made for the lower tech maps, that a gm can use the same maps for the King's castle in one dungeon game and the Royal palace in a space game. Few items would change the entire setting. Also throw in a few of the same items to update the look of a palace to a regular cave and you have a Rebellion hideout for another game. simple things can work wonders. Which lets the developers not worry about making entire new world specific settings and concentrate on things like the organic wall types.. that are usually the staple of some genres.

It seems to me, that the real problem is that Sci-Fi covers everything from Star Trek style space opera to Mad max style Post apocolypse. It seems that if WWG is going to publish something, it would be a set that appeals to a broad audience.
I would suggest doing exterior sets first
Moonworks (with craters, dust pools, a lunar crawler, landing pad, bio-dome, habitat and other buildings.)

Marsworks (just pull the real pics from our ongoing probes of the planet)

Alienworks (Bizzare architecture, strange plants & trees, organic looking walls etc.).

Things like that could be kitbashed together and would be useful for multiple settings.

I'm very satisfied with the different sci-fi looks we have so far.

There's the gritty industrial look of Platform Command

There's the used but not worn-out functional look of First Light

There's the corrupt (or clean) militarized look of Celestus Pravatus

There's the organic look of Shadow Core Prime

There's the weathered outpost look of Mars Station

And we have a different sci-fi look coming up in the Codename:Titan project.

Ancient monolithic technology can be slapped together using other fantasy sets with sci-fi sets, though having some large metal or plastic like chunky walls and surfaces instead of stone textures would really help (I'm thinking the Black Omen and Zeal from Chrono Trigger)

I'd say that rounds things out nicely. Yes, no set will 100% fit in with any pre-existing sci-fi series or show or movie out there. You have to remember that each of those has done what they can to establish their own unique look, and yet seem somewhat familiar.

WWG has done this with their own sci-fi sets; they've made them each unique and yet somewhat familiar. I have no problem integrating different sets together to get the desired effect I want.

I've also got no problem integrating other sets like Guncrawl, Derelict, and Firebase from Ebbles, which each have a feel of their own and yet seem somewhat familiar.


So there's a wide variety of sets that will accommodate a number of different feels for a number of different sci-fi campaigns while not feeling pigeonholed into "this is Star Trek" or "this is Firefly".


About the only thing missing would be steampunk, but then steampunk can vary so widely that it might as well just be a large set containing nothing but modular props to add on to any sci-fi, fantasy, horror, sea and modern sets.

That, and some kind of megalithic set clearly built for beings much larger than the regular miniatures.



As for Marsworks, well, we have the Mars Station and Caveworks that could be spliced together for that.

Moonworks I could just see as a grayscale Marsworks, but with more crater props to place around.


I really like the idea of Alienworks. Something strange and alien but clearly technology based. Something that doesn't look like humans were the primary users, so instead of having rectangular wall and floor plating, use something triangular or round.

Cyberworks - while we're at it, some type of creeping technological set, like a mechanical Shadow Core Prime. The closest I could use for comparison would be the Borg, but having everything in black and dark tones just seems bland. Name this one Cyberworks, since it could work so well as textures to be used in a Cyberpunk campaign.

This discussion is great.

Generic SF is the look and feel of Titan, very dirty and faded in general. The really hard part for me is how to make it NOT look like Trek, Wars, Aliens etc.

A retro SF set is a great idea. What I'd REALLy like to do is to make:

30's: Buck, Flash, Cody. Big chunky rivets and beams, knife switches, simple structure. Art Deco like Griffith Observatory. Monochrome.

50's: Similar to above but with more tail fins and a bit techier. This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet.

60's: More colourful and techy yet, video screens start to appear. Heavy aerospace influence. Gerry Anderson.

70's: Oh baby. Space: 1999, SW, Galactica, Starlost. Vac-u-formed panels, backlit. Lots of primary colours and white. Microgramma.

80's: Mad Max, Spacehunter, Aliens. More rusty and run down.

90's: Babylon 5, Farscape, the last wave before CG crapped all over everything.
