So where the heck is our hotly anticipated <a href="http://www.worldworksgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8554">TerraClips</a> product line I hear you say? Well, the wait has been a long one and both WWG and our partners at <a href="http://wyrd-games.net/">Wyrd Miniatures</a> are right there with you, eagerly awaiting the day we can crack open a fresh box. The smell of new ink, the crisp pop of walls effortlessly punched from the board, an entire modular city built in an hour or two with very little actual work involved...ahh...

So what has been going on? In the spirit of transparency and moving things forward we thought it would be a good idea to present you with this little roadmap of where we've been and where we're headed.

You mentioned that the card is now thicker - can you give us an idea of just how much thicker? Can't wait to see some new promo pictures with the revamped product!

Sure thing. The card is hovering around 1.7mm thick. The original manufacturing run was much thinner which made a substantial difference.

What does "semi-clear transparency" mean? Because the stuff in the photos at GenCon wasn't clear enough, in my opinion. It stuck out in all the pictures like a sore thumb, and appeared to be thick enough to cause a mini to tilt precipitously if standing half-on-half off one.

That was one of the concerns we had with the initial manufacturing run. In an odd, seemingly counter-intuitive discovery, we found that translucent Grey plastics were MUCH more effective than the "clear-clear" we were originally going with. Clips sort of just fade away.

The below demonstrates just how effective that shift from clear to translucent Grey really is...

Much the same as 'Invisible' scotch tape, which is actually a translucent grey - less shine means that it is less noticeable.

Wow - that really is a significant improvement! I never would have guessed that. What led you to try a translucent grey - was it just a one-time manufacturing fluke that you made permanent because it was actually better? It's just such an unintuitive thing to try. It also looks like they may be slightly matte to match the reflectivity of printed card stock, or is that the lighting?


EDIT: Waitasec - I just realized I haven't seen either of those tiles before. Denny, is this your way of hinting at other great news to come?

Hmm... While the new clips do look a lot less intrusive, you've cheated a bit by putting them in a darkened part while the original clips are in a fully lit part.

They do look a lot better though.

It was something that came up in early beta testing. At the time clear-clear seemed like the right move until we actually saw the difference up close. I believe both Aubrey and Chris from Ebbles Miniatures suggested it early on. How right they were



Those tiles as with everything in the first 3 releases in the TerraClips line are completely new material. Buildings of Malifaux (pictured above) has a fairly rich mix of content, every wall inside and out, every double-sided floor completely unique



No cheating, actually there's a few shots I could have used but that one summed things up best (it really is that big of a difference). Once we receive the final run of product from manufacturing I'll be doing my "Hero Build" for photos and you guys can make final judgments from that.

I did wonder about the clips. They seemed very obtrusive from the Gencon photos. Hopefully the new ones fade into the background more.

i feel like you guys are almost like Blizzard in that everyone pisses and moans when you tell your customers "it will be out when its ready" but when it actually does come out, it melts my face with its awesomeness.

The Funny thing is it's very close to the same principle that encourages us to edge everything.

Even when I smudge the sides edging looks better because darkness sort of fades into shadows and dirt, in contrast white reflects light and exaggerates it's size in the human mind. Similarly "Clear" clips reflect light and their size becomes exaggerated while Grey clips fade out like edging smudges.

It's rods and cones I guess.

Very nice....I had not actually intended on purchasing terraclips, but thicker cardstock and the grey clips have me tempted. Very nice work. I hope the design and production effort pay off for both companies.

Its actually Matte board (much like they use in picture framing) but with a satin finish on both sides. So its a pretty robust material that will last for some time when treated properly. Much like a game board.

Just thought I'd point out the difference since cardstock is pretty lightweight and not nearly as strong by comparison.

so it's made of the same type of stuff that the WotC dungeon tiles are made of? If so, it should be pretty robust

oh nice. i really do like the WotTC dungeon tiles as i have many sets of them. they are great for maps and for the money a pretty decent buy especially considering their quality. but the 3d walls from terraclips trump them on so many levels. i'm guessing the price point of $50 is still about the same? if so, thats still reasonable.

Yeah, I like the WotC stuff too, but terraclips clips together, so it won't move as much on the table AND it's 3d. Pure awesomeness. I might buy the buildings set to check it out, although the pricepoint is a little high for me to buy lots of it... we'll see I guess I might end up with more of it than I think
