could you really build a papercraft die that holds up to any sort of use???
Because I know if I was to build this, my friends would try to roll it.

That is awesome. As for papercraft dice, I would expect thicker paper to work better, with photopaper possibly being best.

It's a 3D printer type thing he uses...But I think the company that does it offers a metallic plating of the finished resin/plastic print.
He does a complete "Thorns" dice set...but I think I would want ta complete set of the "Gearhead" ones

I would spend maximum ~$15-20 on a really cool d20 made out of metal...but $9-12 for plastic doesn't sit well. The metal versions are $40-100!

Sadly, that's single-unit production for ya. If the originator came up with the money for a 10,000 pc. run they'd be a lot cheaper.

I've been looking at this production method for a while, and it's great that it's available! Heck, previously one couldn't get this kind of thing at all. And if an item sells well, maybe someone will decide to invest in a longer run.

So yes, it's a limitation of the single-run model, but it's still one of the coolest things ever that we have any opportunity to get these.

Oh, absolutely. I get on the Shapeways site every couple weeks just to see what's new, and I always find something impressive. I can't afford it, but as you say, it's great that it's available.

I can't wait for this kind of thing to become even more readily available. Think of the at-home applications, especially if you could print in color! I am envisioning things like downloadable and printable minis/terrain/dice/storage/etc.

Now to get them to find out how to print players/DMs...

The kit that's most popular is Makerbot: http://www.makerbot.com/

Once they have full color machines available for a reasonable price (they're currently more than $30,000 each) then, THEN, you'll see some interesting things coming to the hobby.
