I am having a hell of a time finding a Silhouette SD from a trusted site. Is the Cameo worth getting or is the SD the one that I want?

I know that the CAMEO was having issues with WWG GSDs when released, but is that something that is fixed or easily worked around yet?

This site is working on the problems with cameo at present (see previous posts) however having a SD I found it great and an excellent time saver in cutting out models.

At present all of the GSD and studio files do work with the SD.

I dunno. I have faith that there'll be a good solution to the reg mark issue - if only a kitbashed template to print on top of existing printouts to square off the one reg mark or something... Shoot - I bet you could quickly make a cardstock sheet with just the regmark square cut out so you could quickly color in on the old style sheets in just the right spot...

Unless you can get a good deal on the model they're no longer selling, I'd seriously consider going for the latest and greatest.

Being the owner of a Cameo:

The "color in the regmark" technique works very well for lots of existing products. For products that don't have the regmarks, but cutfiles exists, I simply have to convert the PDFs to images and then merge the new cutfiles and print the models from within the Silhouette software. Works like a charm.

Also, the 12x12 format has come in handy on more occasions than I thought it would - especially with models that do not have regmarks on them since the images often fall outside the boundaries that would normally be imposed if I were using just a letter-sized cutting mat.

I am not at all unhappy with my purchase!

It will probably be cheaper in the end if you won the bid than for me to ship it to me and then ship it to you. It won't let me change my Maximum bid of $185, but now you know it so you can do with it what you want.

As my wife was interested in the Cameo cutter for her patchwork and I wanted to create a terrainboard for Infinity using the Titan sets, we bought us that cutter.
I was really looking forward to this.
So after getting it, I installed the latest version of the Studio software as I read 'bout the problems with the registration marks. Started printing out some Titan stuff and entered it in the cutter.

As many have already written about this, the cutter didn't automatically recognize the registration marks (even using the Silhouette SD settings!!). So you have to manually position the arm so it can try to detect it. After some fiddling it sometimes works but alas I still only had a 50% succes with the cutting Sometimes the cutting was severly off... Now what I think goes wrong is that I print on A4 paper (no scaling, no centering!!!) but the GSD/Studio files are still in letter format.

So I finally went down the route of converting the PDF's to images, removing the registration marks, importing in the studio software, merging with the GSD file and printing out of the studio software. From then on I had a succes rate of 95%
So what's with the remaining 5% ??? Anchors !!!
When I start cutting the entire achor-page, the cutter stops after cutting and scoring about 2/3 of the page. And then repositions the arm to the starting position. If the woes ended there I could live with that. Unfortunately, during repositiong the arm, it keeps cutting!! So it effectively cuts across the anchors!!! So you loose about 4 big anchors on a page! I've tried to resolve this and finally came to a solution where I had to remove an entire column of small anchors from the cutting instructions. It seems that for the anchors there are to much cutting and scoring instructions and the cameo quits...
I've had the same problems with the page 6 of titan props from the Titan Control Set.
And also page 5 of the same titan props is causing me a headache. While the larger 2 bottom terminals get cut and scored perfectly, the top 4 smaller ones don't. All the white tabs get cut instead of scored so I'm lossing a lot from my page....
So, I've got a bit of a mixed feeling 'bout my purchase. Note though that the Titan terrain does look good for Infinity.

I did not. I found one that is closer to home so the shipping will be less. I'm hoping to get that one. I did not bid on the other one that you had a bid on.

I'm sure I will probably kick myself for not bidding on it, that seems to be my luck.

I foolishly picked up a cameo without doing much research, and after some initial success the whole thing has gone haywire, and I've had it less than a week.

The very first time I used it, it was off. The second time, it was 99% correct, and I was happy. But after that I've had a comical misadventure of trying to make this thing do what it was built to do.

In the past two days the cameo has stopped reading registration marks maybe 70% of the time (when set to SD. I haven't tried filling in a 5mm space to make it cameo native). If I eventually get it to see the reg marks, it will either be extremely off, tear the cardstock, or (and most mockingly) line up everything perfectly but not cut the whole way through.

I'm also on my second blade already, as it decided to mangle a sheet one time and it wedged paper into the original blade assembly.

I find the cameo to be a frustrating and sad product. It's very time-consuming to figure out and expensive for the apparent low quality of its parts.

If I can't figure out the magical mix of settings and physical components to make it line up and actually cut a sheet of paper properly, I'll be attempting to return it even if I get hit with a restocking fee of some sort, because it's simply not worth it.

I hear you, Dohmy. I was reeeeeeally close to picking one up, but when I read about the new ledger lines and calibration issues and vague, confusing workarounds I got cold feet.

It just seems like more trouble than its worth. I think that picking up a Cameo would add more stress to the hobby as I tried to work the whole thing out, and that kills the fun factor for me right there. And I'm similarly afraid to pick up a Silhouette somewhere because I'm afraid of what will happen down the road when its style of ledger lines is no longer supported.

I'm having flashbacks of VHS -vs- Betamax, and that ain't a good thing!

When I know what the future is going to hold and I feel like I don't have to do more work calibrating a machine than I would actually cutting the stuff out by hand, I'll take another look. Until then, no thanks.

Spoke to a few people locally that have the SD and they are in the card craft business.

They have plenty of personal designs that have the SD marks and they are certinally taking up the issue with the cameo/SD issue.

As they are a louder voice in the community, they could force change in the software to recognise both cameo and SD marks.

I did put a few onto this site to see the issues that we are having so they have more push with their battle.
