I have a particularly interesting idea for a build, but I'm not sure how I would construct it so that it would be self supporting.

My idea is a tavern or inn or similar structure that's built out from a cliff face (using Streets tiles for the cliff face). The build would have a very large vertical wall (12-18" high by 8" or so wide) with the structure at the very top, jutting out maybe 8-12". There would be no need to build anything 'behind' the wall.

I'm wondering how something like this could be constructed to be free-standing without building out 'behind' the vertical cliff face.

Has anyone attempted anything like this, and how did it work out?

I would say you would definitely need something "behind" it especially if you want it to hold any weight between structures and minis without flopping over. Of course, you could possibly do it with stronger materials than foamcore and glue the tiles to that. I would definitely make it a solid piece, not multiple tiles. and perhaps use plywood for the vertical face and some smaller that you could join to it horizontally.

Alternatively, have you considered using the cliff set for the vertical rise?

Edit: Just realized this was the TCP forum not the TLX forum...so that is what I would do with TLX. With TCP, I think you would still need a "backer" piece of sturdy material which you could attach clip to in order to get the desired results. I think you will need to dedicate those clips, however, by gluing them in place so they hold tiles top and bottom, but that is just a thought.

A 12-18" free standing wall no problem... but a 12-18" wall with an inn or tavern on top of it.. not going to happen. Every 2 inches of height you add on (4" if you're using one of the new sets) will give it more flexibility to bend and topple over. You'll need at least one more wall to support it.

If you're trying to save walls and clips, I'd suggest finding an object that you can rest behind the wall under your tavern for the needed support. Maybe cut a poster tube to your desired height, and place it under your tavern behind that wall?

Another idea is if you have extra floor tiles that you're not using, you could use them vertically behind your wall for support. Than you won't have to take up as many wall tiles. This should work as long as you maintain heights in factors of 6". Than you'd only have to use 2 or 3 floor tiles behind the scenes as opposed to 6 to 9 wall tiles for the extra support.. I haven't tried using floor vertically personally, but it may work.

Try using metal bookends.

I picked up a pair of L-shaped bookends from our local stationery story that are simply flat steel bent at right angles, 8-9" on the longer 'arm'. They're designed to hold heavy books upright, but come in handy for keeps builds straight and vertical. Supporting the back of the construction you're talking about would be a ride in the park for them.
