I do not know anybody that plays City of Heroes as their main MORPG - but I know lots of people that have it as their other MORPG.

It was my primary gane for five years. I have signed the petition and joined the two Facebook pages. It was a sad day when they announced this. The game is still alive.

Its Galaxies all over again.

Sounds like it is time for a "Save the City" kickstarter.

The rumors on the web are that this shutdown is being driven by problems with who owns the rights to the IP and the content. Rather than fight out such battles in court, the parent company is just opting to abandon it completely. It probably doesn't help that it probably isn't bringing in all that much net profit nowadays, either.

So, I doubt that any effort to try to save the game will succeed. Good luck, though. It was a great game.

i wonder if there is any way to host a local version...granted I do not play this or any MMOs; while they have many pros, this is one of the cons: at least with a console or PC game I have MY GAME and it will never go away without my consent. I would be royally pissed if I invested time and money into this and then had it taken away with no way to continue even independently.

After a 25,000 signature petition the company announces... don't care. Still ending it.

Well obviously it wasn't a rights issue...

Ya know, it could just as easily have been a personal issue. NCsoft and head folks at Paragon maybe just didn't see eye to eye or didn't get along and folks in power at NCsoft might have just said, "Let's just kill the whole damn thing." That's the down side to a small development house being bought or owned by another company. Look at what happened to WotC after Hasbro bought them in 1998. Over the next several years, everyone who had been around at the company for years was let go and replaced with someone else that Hasbro could exercise more control over.

With the anti-OGL camp losing on 3.5 and winning on 4e....

Then WotC getting chomped on the buttocks by a game that did still use the OGL....

I am hearing mixed things on how well 5e is doing/is likely to do. Going by folks at the local BaM! the initial preorder was a good deal smaller than with 4e. We will see how the sell through goes.

With a smaller preorder it is a lot less likely to burn retailers - 4e built up some resentment in the book trade. (Booksellers hate returns. They would much rather strip books than return them.)

The big thing for Pathfinder and bookstores was the sell through - tiny initial orders that sold out, so no returns. Followed by strong ongoing sales - some products being evergreen. (Core, Bestiary, Advanced Player's Guide.) Initial purchase is typically either just the Core or Core and Advanced Player's Guide.

4e on the other hand spiked early, then dropped. (In part because of the online tools - that allowed folks to use material from the books without purchasing the books.) Lots of returns, even on the initial preorder.

Back on topic....

I think that NCSoft just plain did not like having a US studio.

So, they killed it, in spite of the fact that CoH continued to be profitable.

I know folks that have refused to even look at NCSoft games since CoH was cancelled.
