Well I had a little accident today, so I will be taking a few days off from playing with the Urban Mayhem sets. I have two X-Acto knives, one which is fairly blunt, and one is super sharp. The super sharp one had a loose cap, so I thought I'd be clever and switch the caps. It seems like a great idea as they were both a bit tighter.

However, when I went to use my sharp blade, the lid wouldn't come off... I had to put a bit of force behind it and suddenly it came off. Unfortunately, my natural reaction when it suddenly came off was to push the other way to prevent my arm flying backwards... the end result was the nice sharp blade went right into my thumb.

Anyway, it made me realize how dangerous the caps on x-acto knives can be, and I'm lucky I didn't do more damage than a really deep cut. I switched the caps back, and from now on I'll stick with loose caps

Nah, I got lucky. It went in about 5-7mm at a slight angle... so I just stuck in in my mouth. After about 5 minutes and the bleeding not slowly, I went to find te first aid kit... but I didn't need the hospital thankfully.

Reminds me of something a friend of mine did with my Dremel tool. He was playing with it using a circular cutting blade, cutting some plastic I had. I kept warning him to use a pair of pliers cuz the plastic he was cutting was really small and the tool has a tendancy to jump when cutting.

Sure enough, moments later he cut his finger with the Dremel as the plastic got to hot and the blade bound up in it for a second. I think he cut through nearly to the bone, but don't remember for sure.

He was lucky in that he didn't need stitches either but...

The pliers I used for holding stuff had numerous nicks on them from the blade cutting them when it would jump like that.

Hmmmm. I work on a large clipboard with a cutting mat on my lap. I'm just waiting for a major slip with this setup. Guess I should wear a "cup" when I work with WWG products.

As for power tools, I'd rather work with my molten metal and casting lead minis than work with any sort of cutting tool. I can heal a burn. Kinda hard to replace things. But it can happen with anything. One of my troops at Ft Knox was using a paper cutter and took off about half inch from his thumb. That taught us all not to remove that safety bar. Thankfully, one of the other folks had the forethought to pick up the severed digit and wrap it up, and they took it with them to the emergency room where it was sewn back on.

I've dipped into my left index finger on two seperate occasions with a wood saw, the first time I remember and the second I don't. I was trimming firewood without the benefit of an axe the first time.

I didn't need to go to the hospital, but it bled real good. }:D

That was acftually one of the reasons for a change from an exacto knife to a cutting knife with retractable blade. The top kept coming off the exacto knife, so when I stored it in my kit (one of those plastic tool kit thingies with multiple compartments that holds pens, glue, rulers and blades), I had two choices: leave the knife point down, which dulls it that much faster, or leave it point up, which ain't so good when you're reach in to grab something.

The retractable blade is a much safer.
