Inspired by another using a transparancy printed Chunky Dungeons piece for the internal visuals of portal activity, and lacking that set, I decided to attempt something similiar using the sewer pool tiles from DungeonWorks:Gothic Realms, I used the blood pool tile, and the water tile (the odd color is due to lack of red in the cartridge).

Here is a shot of the assembled for those not interested in the rest of this post, there are several pics in the in my gallery for those who just want to peruse.

The three biggest features of this build are;

1) The portals are interchangeable, I have made three so far, two active ( & ), and one for those times when the portal is inactive (this also hides the gap when the portal inserts aren't in place). Here is a closeup shot of one of the This also allows for all kinds of alternate future inserts to be made as well. The inserts are placed thru a of the main portal piece.

2) This build and lays flat when needed to be stored, it is quite a snug fit, and holds itself together with no problems, it assembles quickly and with ease, and feels quite sturdy when assembled. There are currently six pieces to this build, the main gate, the two support columns (removeable), and the three portal inserts. Here is a pic of one of the , the other not.

3) It is freebased, as in it doesn't have a tile base so it can be placed almost anywhere with great ease, making it quite modular.

I also did a minor test as shown in these three pics (, , ) of the two active inserts placed with a gap between them, which gave the piece an interesting 3D aspect, and gave it a more mystical look. I will be making a test insert later to try it out, if it works, I have a few ideas for later builds.

Lol, I made this yesterday after the building itch finally got to me, it was a bit like having writers block suddenly go away. I made 21 small barrels, and nine cargo bundles (3 pages, all cardstock) from "SkullCove", as well as this portal yesterday, I have to admit I was busy for hours.

Damn! I had been successfully resisting this set until now. Altering this structure to give it interchangable portal transparencies pushes this model from nice to must-have.

I should have realized that WWG have allied themselves with the Borg. Resistance IS futile!

That's very nicely done SD. Inspires me to redo my portal to make it easier to insert different pieces.

Guess I'll be studying what you've done a little closer so that I can get one that works like yours does.

For my money, I prefer the look of a single portal panel. Each has their own pattern and I felt that individuality was a little lost when multiple portals were in place. Perhaps "in person" it looks better.

YIKERS! Just thought of something that may bring my plans to a screaching halt.

Can anyone tell me if transparencies print okay on ink jet printers? I'm planning to give that custom portal a shot and will be heading out tomorrow to buy my first pack of transparency film at Office Depot, when it occurred to me that perhaps only laser printing works on those.

I sure hope not!

Mission accomplished. Turns out (a) the inkjet transparency products were cheaper per page than the laser products, and (b) the store brand box worked out to the cheapest price per page - cheaper than I expected (I had anticipated paying about .75 cents per page).

Boxes of 50 (store brand) were going for $35 but a box of 100 was $50, or only .50 cents per page. When you think of it like that, they were practically free

I didn't even consider the "name" brand that was touting 25% More Free! on the cover because they were trying to seel me a package of 20 (with a strike through that number and a bold 25 next to that) for $25.

Also picked up lots of Sharpies in different colors for edging cardstock. Now all I've gotta do is find the time to play.

Once again the portal pics are available, this was one of my favorite kitbashes and was incredibly simple to do, the best part is it breaks down completely flat for storage and unlike the Maidens hasn't taken any damage (the Maiden I kitbash was completely destroyed in the move, and the Maiden II suffered serious foremast issues). Very nice. I don't think I ever saw it before. I'm definitely doing it that way when I build the encounters set.

I have held off on transparencies so far due to the sets I have built only having small window openings. I would actually use this one though. Great pics and way inspire!
