As a hobby evolves so do it's disciples. The art of pdf. cardstocking has be ever changing, leveling as techniques and technology move forward. So it comes as no big surprise that more and more of us are kitbashing and modding the hell out of what we crave, to the point that is it really just about Cardstock Terrain anymore?

With the unleashing of Hellworks II Cathedrae Nocti I think I have turned the point and said to myself " I want more. more from a flat piece of cardstock, more from the textured layers of cleverly 2D art that fools the eye into seeing the third D" I want to go down the path of Foamcore structures!

Cutting the crap.


Looking at the two part walls in Cathedrae Nocti I know that these would "like totally" lend themselves to being reinforced with foamcore. To bulk out the structure.

The one area that I have been tossing up is the windows and their arches + internal frames. Do I trim out the total area of the window replacing it with Transparencies or do I trim out the glass only leaving a thin frame of Foamcore? I really like the idea of triming out the glass panes only but I can see the trouble of it. Foamcore is not the most forgiving of materials to work with in regard to cutting.

Then there is the fact that you have to curve the cut. So it got me thinking that I might need a template... great idea but so impractical - I mean anything that I easily make a template from means that it will slice very easily. Anything that lasts a sarp bland is just way to hard to think about. So I came up with the idea of using a pin and pricking out the curves. This way the foamcore get punctures but not enough that it will come apart but will leave a perforation line for the blade to easily slip into and through.

With this I think I can tackle the cutting of the panes of glass and not have to remove the whole window and then have to do a hybrid on it.

I don't have the Cathedrae Noctis, but based on the I would probably cut out the thin frame around the windows that have what I call the "Y" supports.

So you would Print out the wall on cardstock. Glue the printed outside wall down to your foam core. Cut out the thin frame around the window using the actual printout as your guide. But ONLY cut through the layer of cardboard and foam, not the interior side of the cardboard.

Print out the interior side of the wall glue it to the foam core (which you could also do this before you start any cutting). On the interior wall just cut out the window areas themselves.

Glue the transparency down on the exterior wall cardboard. I would then use the cut out "Y" frame for the exterior wall that you cut out. Scrape the foam off the back and glue that onto the transparency windows. You end up with the transparency sandwiched between the two cardboard layers of foam core with the foam removed. This is a combination of how I cut out the doors and windows in my tutorial you cited above.

So in that description where does the transp. lie? On the outside of the exterior in the foamcore or below the internal wall ?

I was thinking of using the exterior wall as the template then layering the transp. on the inside before gluing down the internal wall. I was also thinking of removing the glass of the intern. before glueing so I could line up the holes.

Why leave the foamcore cardboard on the inside - how does this help?


Please note that these are all friendly questions but might be read as a tad tart.

Since I have printed off the sheets I need for this little foray I can see that the "Y"'s will be easier to remove than what I first thought - easier but not easy.

I did a quick sketch that might help demonstrate what I was talking about. The sketch show the assembly after you have already cut out the outside "Y" window frame, cut out the empty spaces in the "Y" window frame on the inside and scrapped off the middle foam.

A. Is the cutout of the outside "Y" window with the Cathedrae print already attached.
B. Is the window transparency.
C. Is the foam core that already has the inside and outside print outs attached. Plus the empty spaces of the "Y" frame on the inside window have been removed.

Then you just sandwich them together outside "Y" frame, transparency, foamcore.

I was trimming out he glass yesterday, let me just say it is very very fiddly. Oh and if you thought doing the windows in Mayhem could leave it a tad butchered on the inside just wait until you try these little suckers.

Why would you take it back to the lower layer? My thinking is that the stone work "Y" should pop out thus by trimming out the glass and mounting it on the back profiles it. I hope that I will have a picture of finished wall section once I get some transp. done (I use a laser and I have yet to find some that will run through it.)


Otherwise the wall sections look dead sexy sitting on the foamcore.

Needless to say that if I was building this for 15mm - the whole window - Y and all will have to go. I was also thinking that Balsa wood might be fun to try on the smaller scales.

Looks good so far. At least all the windows do not have the "Y" frame. I look forward to seeing the Cathedral finished. It will probably help determine if I will buy the kit. The stained glass transparencies should look nice.

Ahh... but I am only doing a ruined corner as a tester. I really don't have the room for a full-blown version.

Note to self. Increase Transparencies by 5 - 10 % to factor in foamcore deviation esp. on the thin Y's.

Well wish you luck... !! I try to make it reinforced also with foam...but (even with the guide) once I had one full wall ready to glue to the next one I saw that it won't work...with exteriors I could see ... but if you have interior also I couldn't make them match... Very frustrating for me... Hope you get the solution...but for me was a lost of time... maybe you have luck and learn for next time...

I still have to skin the outside of the other wall before hacking it down and then assembling it. Tried to do so last nice with the real neat idea of using spray glue (mounting spray) on the cardstock.... way too hard to place properly (lazy Wormwood). So now I have to reprint that outside skin and take the windows out (again) but after doing this through the foamcore... its a piece of piss.
