The cabin underneath is a bit small, in comparison, but nothing a little mod won't fix. Plus, I may repaint one of the two I picked up.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, or if this even counts (I haven't really read the entire thing yet):

I'm finding more and more boardgames are having comparable miniatures for my RPG games. Descent: Journey into Darkness by Fantasy Flight Games, for example. The monsters in that game are pretty cool looking (even though I'm renaming them for my own game). And they aren't even close to being done making expansions yet! There's a fourth out there that features Yetis and ice creatures.

Yeah, I've considered that game several times. It reminds me of Heroquest.

I think the prepaints that come in their Tannhauser game are even better. But they are modern, rather than fantasy.

But I've always gotten the bulk of my minis from boardgames:

Wow, Key to the Kingdom. I used to have that one, too. I think some of my skeletons are from that game, since they were so nicely done.

Anyway, I have a shitload of figs from the old BattleMasters game.

I also cut like dozens of MageKnight figs from their bases and mounted them with poly glue to 1" square bases.

Descent is sorta like Heroquest, but a bit more complex and it's competitive. Basically, the Overlord is not a DM, but another player out to kill the heroes as many times as possible until they run out of Conquest Points. Road to Legend makes it less of a one six hour dungeon game and more of a campaign, but still pretty tough.

We still play it the way it's made to be played, but I use a lot of the minis from it in my RPG campaigns. Mostly just for show. Gives the players something to look at while I yammer on.

It was that 6 hour time frame that made me hold off on it, even before my gaming group moved away.

Key to the kingdom was something I picked up at the salvation army a couple months ago. I haven't tried playing it yet.

I used to have a different heroquest knock off, I can't remember the name. But the hero figures had removable weapons that were switched when you found better ones during the game. sadly I've lost all but like 3 of the monsters from that.


I've never played any of the 15mm mini games. But I keep wondering if the pieces from Risk would work for that.

Whoops. I did have Key to the Kingdom, but it's not the game I was thinking of. In fact, the game you just mentioned with the removable weapons ...

Yeah, my skeletons are from Dark World. I still have most of the pieces to that game, as well, stuffed in my Heroquest box.

I had a decent run of luck on ebay recently. 5 separate Mcfarlane dragon auctions over 2 days, all of which I won, 4 for $5 and the last for $7. Even better all where from the same seller. So instead of paying $9 shipping on each, I paid $17 total.

I got:
Series 6 Warrior
Series 2 Sorcerer
Series 4 Sorcerer and Eternal
Series 5 Eternal

Sadly the series 4, which where my favorites from the pics, aren't as good in person. I really like the eternal's neon green spots. But on the figure they were much smaller and no where near as bright.

But the sorcerer is much worse. Its just not a great paint job, the head especially looks sloppy. One of the arms has a noticeable gap between it and the torso. But the tail is the biggest defect. It seems to have been miscast. Where the tail end section is distinctly wider than the section where it joins with the rest of the tail. On the bottom of that spot there a rough sunken in area, and the joint isn't at all tight. So the last 5" of the tail keep falling down, rather than angle up like they're supposed to.

I really like the series 5 eternal though. The trees are only so so compared to flocking trees. But the dragon itself is nicely sculpted and painted and the wings fit very well. I like it much better in person.

The series 2 sorcerer is a bit more drab in person but nothing to complain about. What is odd about it is the size. When put next to any of the other dragons it looks like its a slightly smaller scale.

That brings my (flock/herd?) of mcfarlane dragons to 16. Only 10 more of the current releases I still want to buy.


Edit: I found out what the mystery dragon was. Its the Ancient Wyrm from Ultima.

$7.99 a shot though? *Sigh*

Yeah thats a little expensive. There used to be a game store right near my house, it just closed this summer. But they used to have a whole isle of gashapon for $3-$5. Sadly I only ever bought 1 or 2 mechs.
