When I printed out the pages for the towers that I've built, I noticed that the image was getting slightly cropped width-wise, but that was fine because I didn't end up missing anything.

But now I've tried printing out the pages needed for a wall, and the cropping is actually getting rid of some of the image I actually care about (I'm losing part of the top of the wall on the left of the image).

I tried using the printer settings to scale the image down 90%, but the image is still getting cropped so it's not that the printer can't print beyond a certain point (which is what I was thinking was happening, hence my hope that scaling it down might help.



The page up top is my first attempt. The page toward the bottom of the image is the scaled image.

Anyone have any idea what setting I might try to make this change? Please don't be shy about asking for more information if you need it to help me diagnose.

Seems to be something to do with my printer (Canon iP4300) and how Adobe works with it. Under page Layout I can choose three options that come anywhere near what I want:
Normal-size Printing, which gives me the what looks like full size but it's cut off.
Fit-to-Page Printing, which gives me the whole image but I figure the scale is messed up.
Scaled Printing, which makes the image smaller but doesn't uncrop the image.

I'm going to experiment with Gimp.

So I did the following with Gimp:
1) Selected a page in Adobe Reader and copied it.
2) Pasted it into Gimp.
3) Tried printing it. It came out cropped. What seems to be going on is the printer has a physical margin that it can't print beyond.
4) Selected the part of the image I wanted to print using the Rectangle Select tool.
5) Cut the image.
6) Pasted it, dragged it to where I wanted it to be. I tried holding down CTRL and ALT to drag the image around but found that to be more difficult to do than cutting the image, pasting it and dragging it. Oh! Making the selection floating and then dragging that around seems to work pretty well. I'll probably do that next time.
7) Printed it.

So now I've got the printed image and all should be well, yes?

Not quite. Because now I'm looking at what was printed from Adobe when it had no scale and was getting cropped, and the Adobe print is significantly larger than what got printed out from Gimp. Since I didn't do anything to alter the size of the image I'm hoping it's right and will work, but I'm thinking I'll need to copy everything else into Gimp since Gimp and Adobe disagree about how large things are.

Is there something I should do differently when I paste something into Gimp?

I feel like I want to make sure the dimensions are "right" with my Gimped first page of my Classic Castle Wall (it's actually page 2 of the file).
From the very top of the black that you cut away above the wall to the bottom of the ground that gets folded out in front of the wall is 12.5 cm. From the top of the black above the wall to the fold where the wall meets the ground is 11.5 cm. The width of the wall from the left border to the that runs from the top of the wall to the bottom is 21.2 cm. The large ladder is 9.6 cm tall.

If these dimensions are reasonable, then I will Gimp the other pages and print them all.

I'm thinking I should probably just Gimp all the other pages, print it all out and just give the assembly a try but I'm going to bed now and I figure I may as well get peoples' ideas in the meantime.

After printing out some more pages with Gimp, it's looking like the scale is coming out consistently and it's all uncropped.

when there is a scale issue between Adobe and Gimp its usually a dpi issue.

In adobe go to the top Edit tab - then preferences - the the general tab on the left. At the bottom of the window there should be a dpi resolution setting. It can be changed to what ever you wish, but 200 is a good min. Going above 300 will make the GIMP files huge.

Now once you know that number start GIMP.
When you open a new project set the page size, 8.5x11 if you want full control of the margins. Click on the advanced options button and set the resolution to match adobe's.

Now things should print the same scale. Unless you shrink the copied selection before anchoring it in GIMP.

I've tried that method you outlined and everything else I could think of to get the PDF files imported into Gimp with the same scale as they are in the PDFs and I can't get it to work right. I even tried opening the PDF in Gimp itself. I couldn't tell how large the image was since it showed the size in pixels instead of inches. So I tried printing it out and it was a few inches smaller than the same page printed directly from the PDF.

Anyone have any other ideas for how to get the images from the PDF into Gimp in such a way that I can print it out in the same scale?

Out of curiosity, which set is this? If it's one of the older sets it should come with a page explaining exactly how it should be printed and at what settings.

In GIMP at the bottom left of the image window it says px. Click on the down arrow next to it and you can change the measurement unit. Inches, millimeters, what ever you like.

If you cannot get the image to print the same scale even after matching DPI or opening it in GIMP, I think you must have some print option turned on.

Is this still the same issue with the walls?

Are you using the camera tool to copy the selected portion?

This is the original CastleWorks from the Classic Combo. The instructions that it referred me to are the beginners guide.

I've uploaded images of every setting so you could see for yourself the settings I've got and the page I was using as my guide. I made sure to cover up anything I could think of that might show a texture someone could use. If I didn't do a complete enough job of that please let me know and I'll edit the image to suit.

In the print preview image (the last one) it shows the problem I'm having. I've circled in red the print preview that is showing on the screen, where you can clearly see that part of the scissors and part of the tops of the wall are getting cut off. Circled in green is the portion of the PDF where you can see the whole top of the wall to compare to the red-circled abbreviated top of the wall.

I'm certain that this is a problem with my printer, and I'm kicking myself for not buying something someone else on the forum is already using. That said, I will be pleased as punch if someone looks at my settings and says, "No, not like that... Can't you read? Change this one setting and you're good to go!"

Have you tried selected auto rotate and center?

I noticed you have a variety of other sets. Is this printing problem only occurring for this one page, or does it happen any time the textures of the pages near the borders?

You only need to try and protect the WW textures when there being shown in high resolution or at full size. Its not necessary to block out thumbnail pics.

As you can see I've got it set to Normal size printing, which is the scaling option.

I just tried auto rotate and centering and that didn't help.

I haven't done a lot of printing, but I've noticed that parts of the towers that I didn't care about were getting cut off (the copyright info on the one side of the page). So it might be a problem with future sets I print and will definitely continue to plague my attempts at printing out the castle.

Figured out how to deal with Gimp. I tried printing out images by copying them into Gimp and then printing them, but found that when I printed Classic Dungeon pieces the squares measure 15/16s of an inch across. This even happened when I scaled the image up. So I figured my printer was up to something strange again...

So I tried the following:
1) Selected a rectangle that covered nothing more than the image I wanted.
2) Copied the image using <ctrl-c>.
3) Did File -> Create -> From Clipboard
4) Then printed that new image.

The image on the paper's squares measured out at 1 inch across.

I think maybe the printer was doing something strange since it was cropping my PDF images and then when I'd try to scale the image in Adobe Reader it was messing that up as well.

Anyway, it seems to work.

I glad to hear you've worked out a solution. A pity the problem wasn't fixed though.

Thanks! The problem seems to be my printer which is being replaced for Christmas by one of the Brother printers recommended in another thread (I'm so excited!).

Also, this fiddling around in Gimp led to something that I'm psyched about... I'll share it in the pictures section once I've had a chance to try it.

Magnets and some very basic kitbashing are involved (which I'm pleased about since I didn't think I'd ever end up kitbashing anything).
