Hi, everyone. I've been working on my first Maiden Build. It's a great model, and as always, with WWG models it is so much more cool in "real life" . I did a lot of searching for build pics and tips and would like to thank all of you who posted such excellent helpful threads. I found them very useful and am sure others have as well and will continue to do so. Iused several kitbashes and came up with a couple of my own. I still have to do the props and finish the lower decks. I think I'll name her the Sea Witch (oh, so original ) Here's some pics:

This shot shows the Sea Witch in all her glory, with kitbashes from Matt Lyon's Pirate Sails, Snizitch's Skeletal Masthead, and LD2062's 3D Booms.


My first little Maiden kitbash, I bashed some of the planking to edge the lower deck foamcore.


That got me going on bashing some planking for the bottom of the hull, and some planking with the support beams for the underside of the upper decks.

You can see how I don't follow instructions well and cut out the 1" square grating from the decks also, instead of just the large cargo grates. I ended up using chain link transparencies for Urban Mayhem for those small grates.

I made my bowsprit piece too loose so I wanted to fix it. After a search of the user albums I found a pic where LD2062 had reinforced his bowsprit and closed the opening beneath the bowsprit so I did something similar. I used a piece of foam from a mini carrying case, squeezed it small and stuffed it into the space. Seems to have done the trick. Then I closed off the opening with a piece of the underdeck planking I had left over.



The plank is a really cool easy to make prop, and amazingly strong. Here it is in use.

Thanks, everyone. I agree LD, I would like an edging strip for the boats. I almost didn't make my plank edging because I thought it wouldn't match well with the little bit of water spray you get at the bow, but then decided it would still look better than the blank foamcore edge. And you're right Lord A, I am tickled with the build. I'm not the best modeler by far but the model is so well done and forgiving of mistakes that even with my modest skills I got a very nice result. Now if I can just keep the kids and the cat off of it.

I made some props to go with the build today. It was a great day, work cancelled because of ice and snow, all day to model, even got in a game of D&D minis with my son. Anyway, here's some shots of the hold and Captain's Cabin.

Well, there you have it. I enjoyed this build a lot. I have several other ships from scratch-builts to resin models, but The Maiden is the queen of the fleet. Now I have to get hot on a nice seedy port city.

Awesome work! Awesome rats! I love all the little tweaks you did and the build is really clean. Gives me inspiration to start thinking about the next ship in the fleet

@LD: Thanks, you're right about the foamcore bits. I've got a drawer full of them. It was really quick and easy, measure and a few cuts and glue into place. Voila.

@DeltaIce: Thanks. This has been my favorite build. Now that I completed the Maiden, I feel like a real WorldWorks Gamer.

@Denny: Thanks very much. You did such an awesome job with the design and textures it was hard to stop working on it. Speaking of the next ship in the fleet, Yes, Please! I'd really love to see a modern ship from you, but I'm sure anyway you go will be great.

Speaking of a modern ship, when I finished the second step of the Maiden build, the hull, I noticed how much the shape of the Maiden's hull resembles that of a modern ship. So I took sections from PallS' Mayhem Marina kitbash and overlaid them onto the long hull section from the Maiden in PaintShop Pro. Went together perfectly. Maybe there is some potential there for Fan Megabash. I remember that DR999 had something along those lines planned (hint hint)..

Denny, I too would like a modern ship kit, a tramp steamer for Pulp games.
Honestly though Denny, I would rather have, no, that is not right; rather I would LOVE a zeppelin first.
A good 30-48 inch one if you would please.
With all the standard rooms both a military zep and a passenger zep could use.
Maybe it could start with one type and then there could be a supplement with the other type.
Like what was done with First Light and Shellendrak Manor.

Anyway, an excellent ship build LuckyJoe.

@MorgamM: Thanks, I hope you do get yourself the Maiden. I think you will really like it. It is probably my favorite set. And, once built, you can do a lot with it, RPGs to Pirates or other Naval games. The set has so much utility. Plus, it just looks nice.

@ Rabidfox: Thanks, it was a lot of fun to build. I like your idea for a zeppelin. That would be a cool set, especially with supplements of different types.

A little update for the Sea Witch. After reading Grumps thread on mini preference I realized in 30+ years of gaming that I've done little with paper minis and never really liked them much. There were some convincing arguments for their use presented in the thread so I decided I would make some. I had some freebie Skeletal Pirates from another company, and was getting ready to make some of those for my crew. Then I remembered the WWG Maiden's 20 set and decided to try those. I also used to be kind of anti-paper terrain until I found WWG. So it makes sense that if I liked their terrain I would probably also like their minis. I think they look great. At the same time I was making them I was also converting some Horrorclix minis and rebasing and painting them for another game. I have to say it was a lot faster and easier to make the standees, and I know it was a lot cheaper even than using prepaints. Plus I can print out as many as I want. Now if we can just convince Denny and the gang to make more standees. Here's a few pics and thanks for looking:
