Started building The Maiden tonight!

Here's a pic of the decking still attached to the piece of foamcore.

I was going to do the light vent cutouts but remembered I just don't have the patience right now.

I had been meaning on going back and building a normal Maiden, so that I'd have another one besides the bashed one I made and seing Rastl talking about making it got me to start printing out another one last night so that I could make it full sized.

Shame on you Rastl, now I've got another project to do! :wink:

Now if I can just remember to post pictures of a prototype I just finished of another project I'm working on...

I'm following the instructions so here's the latest. I didn't bother taking a picture of the hull sections once I cut them off the foamcore. Those weren't very interesting. But getting black-on-black foamcore means very little work with a marker on those!

Here's the sterncastle with the steering linkage bits. I cut out the wheel rather late at night so it got a little rough.

Then I got to work on the hull sections. I'll show you what I've got then share my observations.

Observations:

I used too much glue at times when putting the hull pieces together. Although they need to be strong putting too much glue between them just makes them ripple.

I was in too much of a hurry on some of the pieces. Dry pieces are happier than moist ones. And they can shift in subtle and unhappy ways. That's why some of the don't align quite right in places.

Le Plume markers are great for edging. They're nice and juicy and they have two different points. The brush end gets right into the little corners as well as the scored lines and the fine point gets where the brush point won't.

Binder clips can be very useful. Just to keep various points together or when gluing wall pieces together. They keep a nice pressure on the edges.

That's all. I didn't print off the second sheet of inside wall supports so I'll be doing that tomorrow. Then I'll keep on working.

Great build, so far!
I had the same problem with the hull sides rippling, although I think my problem was due more to not having the sections perfectly lined up when I glued them together into one long strip. I've learned that on those long wall sections that you have to take extra care in lining them up straight or they will ripple on you.
There are some supports in the set that you glue to the hulls, hopefully that will help aleviate your rippled walls.

The photos look nice so far. I can't remember if my bash has that problem or not. Guess I'll have to look, but I think the supports helped get rid of that problem.

I've got the hull attached to foamcore on my rebuild and started on the bow last night. I'm not working to fast on mine as I'm trying to get it just right.

But yours looks good!

The Maiden is a monster. I hate her, and yet I love her. I love to hate her.

That's one project I'm glad I've completed, but I never want to do again!

I built mine for my "Freeport" campaign (Green Ronin). Fantasy, Pirates, etc... The Maiden and Skull Cove are PERFECT!! Now, she just sits on the table nearby when we play, inspiring us to greater heights of Swashbuckling.

Betcha thought I gave up. No way!

Some other projects have caught my attention *cough cough Hirst Arts cough* but I've been plugging along on this.

I got the interior support beams in place and the mast supports. There were a few complications.

Since I had the "Ripply Wall Syndrome" going on big time the support beams wouldn't stay in place. So I used the ever handy binder clips to straighten the walls. I put small clips on opposite walls and used cord to pull the walls straighter. I did this in several areas so the main length of the wall was reasonably straight. Once the support beams were glued in place the walls pretty much stayed that way. Two bases came up while I was manipulating the last support beams into place but they will be easy to fix.

The mast supports have optional instructions to color the insides black. I decided to color all of them prior to gluing. On one I left a margin around where the tabs would glue and the other two I colored just to where I thought there would be sufficient uncolored cardstock for the glue to hit. Mmmmm.... Sharpie fumes ...

The ones where I colored more into the gluing area turned out better since the extra glue from the tabs prevents me from completely coloring the first one. Live and learn.

Yes I can see the major wall bend still in place. I'll work on getting that straight as I keep working. Oh yeah, I glued the rudder on too.

Speaking of glue. I have been using the UHU Twist n Glue for all of this but decided to try the Elmer's Craft Bond glue pen. I can see uses for both. The UHU is better for high-adhesive things like attaching support beams to the walls. The Elmer's is better for low-adhesive things like folding and gluing the support beams together in the first place. YMMV

Here's something that'll help you a bunch, then, Rastl: pre-edge!

I can't edge after gluing, 1) because the superglue gels repel most of the Prismacolor ink, and 2) I'm a clumsy oaf, an I'll get marker all over the most visible surface, guaranteed. :wink:

Pre-edging (right before gluing) has saved me hours of aggrivation. It's also far easier to get into the tiny inside crevasses.
