Finally got round to building a prototype of the chunky Sci-Fi corridor.

This is the first of a whole series of chunky corridors, junctions and rooms. I learned my lesson with my last project and now only will only start building all the other sections when the construction method is finalised.

Internal bracing is shown, this did and didn’t work.

It did stop the wall bowing out as in my original prototype and makes the walls very strong. However it also means the walls are slightly ‘wavy’ (you can also see this on a shot from the side).

I think I will have to reinforce the sides of the walls with card or even lollypop-sticks before putting in a box support. This will add to the build time so I need to compromise at some point between time and results. Anyone got any other ideas as to how to keep the walls straight?

Need to decide whether to raise the corridor tiles more, will build a further prototype to see how it looks.

I also think I will lose the striped base and just stick to plain black, only problem being I can only get white foam board locally.

Have already prepared all the junctions and different wall lengths for assembly, now working on the room sections.. The doorways are the most tricky bit but decided on 2” wide doorways with raised floor and am currently working on widening the doors from firstlight and Mars Station to fit.

Now off on holiday for 2 weeks all we have to do is decide where to go. I favour the stick a pin in the map method.

Well I'm off on hols for 2 weeks which means no PC but I may get round to completing some other sections I've printed and then stick a few together via mini Post-Its. Hopefully it will look at least half as good as I hope.

I love Space Hulk but haven't played it in an age. Maybe I'll dig it out of the cupboard this weekend. However my 'stealers don't look like that. I've never been bothered to paint em.

Very nice looking set. There is another way that you could use to brace the walls that gives you the same thickness. I experimented with this a little, but it tends to be very time consuming!

Using foam scenery made by Woodland Scenics, you cut out pieces that will fit inside the walls. The foam comes in sheets and I believe I was using the 1/4" version. There is a little space around the foam and the cardstock, but not enough to worry about. Each sheet is 12" x 24", so you can get an idea of how much you get with each sheet.

Like I said, I've tried using it and it works pretty nicely, it's just more time intensive that I want to take.

Wow, those look fantastic. It makes me wish a First Light Chunky Style was in the works at WWG. Considering the extensive texture use, I'd imagine a Kitbash is out of the question, so I guess all I can do is sit here and suffer, and maybe someday figure out how to do the same thing myself.

Thanks for the tip, I could just use strips of foamboard inside the but that may prove expensive. At present the walls are very strong vertically which I want to keep as I will be stacking them on storage. I think I will try using square reinforcing sections instead of the Z sections I put in this one and reinforce the sides with more card, this should cut down the number of internal supports. Also I will have to extend the outside walls to go underneath the base as I managed to pull the card of the foamboard away from the actual foam.

Didn't manage any more builds as I spent the first week watching my backlog of DVDs and then stripping paint of metal terminator mini's. Did hit Dublin for the next week, great time was had by all . Got back last night and now back at work, no rest for the morally challenged!

Oh yeah. We've got to have an update on this! Very nice stuff - love the raised floor. You need some blood pools and such too though.

Progress is very slow, I stopped and decided to rethink the whole thing and opted to scale up the sections by 20% to give a 30mm grid rather than the 25mm I was initially using.

Reasons are :-

SpaceHulk uses a 30mm grid and I'm a stickler for tradition

There wasn't really enough room for the models using 25mm, those stealer arms really get in the way!

I've decided to use 7mm polystyrene ceiling tiles to brace in internal walls. 2 tiles will give 14mm with 1mm allowance for the card gives 15mm which means the 12.5mm walls I was using are too narrow. Add another 20% and you get 15mm.

So basically I've got to resize all my existing sections, I've not got very far but I will get stuck back in over christmas. Now all I need to do is find time to watch the complete Bablyon 5 Universe box set I treated myself to (it is christmas - almost)

Almost forgot - what colour is stealer blood anyway?

Eh? Got me I would think some shade of magenta but I don't know what GW canon on the issue is.

Looking forward to seeing your new builds on this. Please keep us posted - I'd love to do this someday for some modern-day SH shooty goodness.

Well it was in the first couple of releases, the Hybrids might have been closer to red with a blue tinge.

But the 'stealers fluff has been re-written so many times that as long as it's not green you would be fine.

This is now based on a 1.2" grid to give more room for figures (those stealers take up a lot of space) and matches the original board sections. The height remains the same (2") but all other dimesions were stretched by 20%.

Raised the walkway a bit to make it a more precarious and sorted the wall bulges using a 'polystyrene sandwich' and glued the walls onto this.

Now it's just a matter of building all the necessary sections after a few cosmetic changes. More pictures will appear as I progress.

Very nice! I actually like the cramped feel of the smaller one but the bigger one does look much more 'to scale' Looking forward to more!

I've finished designing and printing all the sections from the 1st Edition, just need to do is assemble them. This will take some time as I'm learning from my mistakes as I go, not looking forward to the rooms at all.

Mite! Where the hell have you been hiding, good to see you back. Just viewing the shots now but I remember your work when you posted it first time around; Just love it!

Now you will have to get in the bashing groove and kick out some kitbashes for us punters.

I've been visiting regularly, just not posting. I don't know if the bashes I've done can be released as there is a lot of Stone Edges 'Orbital' involved (I couldn't find anything from WWG I thought was suitable and sufficiently dark)

I've uploaded some more pictures to my gallery which show some of the junctions I've been working on included in the test build.

Obviously it's nowhere near finished as the floor tiles have not yet been placed and I the pieces need to be edged.

In particular I will point out the 'tabs' that stick out from the corner pieces. These are there to preserve the integrity of the rules and stop shooting around corners. I've looked at a lot of other 3D Space Hulk designs on the web and most seem to have the problem that models are clearly visible to each other around corners in conflict with the rules.

More pics will follow as I assemble more of the components and wait for my copy of the 3rd edition to be delivered.

May I ask witch sets you use?
FirstLight and/or Celestus?

The only WWG sets used are Firstlight and Retrofit.
