*OWNERSHIP BADGES* Project: WWG Pride

Hey all,

I've wanted to do this for some time now and I found a few spare moments to finish it off this afternoon while working on other things.

"Ownership Badges" are essentially little buttons you can add to your forum signature which tell everyone which modelsets you have in your collection. This will also help you get a better sense of what modelsets your fellow WWG'rs have in their collections and where their main focus is.

This is just a fun little experiment but I thought it would be nice to show some "pride in ownership".

HOW TO ADD BADGES TO YOUR SIGNATURE:

*PLEASE NOTE* When adding badges to your signature please hit enter after every 5th entry. This will keep the forum from stretching too wide to accomodate your sig.

* Login to your forum account and click "Profile" (top middle of the screen under the banner)

* In the area marked "Signature" add the following code for each badge or product you own:

- The simple way to go is to select one of the URL's listed below. All that you need to do is add the image tag to the beginning and end; for example (minus the "*" inside the brackets, shown only so that the code displays): [*img]http://www.worldworksgames.com/cat_images/owners/downtown.gif[/img*]

Will give you this:

- A more complex version which includes a URL to the product page *[url=http://worldworksgames.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=27][img]http://www.worldworksgames.com/cat_images/owners/maiden.gif[/img][/url]*

Which would give you the following with a clickable link:

Ok, revisionist history REBOOT! lol. I want to thank Arabin and Grump for pointing out a couple issues. The badges have been given a much less intrusive visual treatment and work much better now.

Hmmm, perhaps a suggestion to add these to signatures on sites outside of World Works might also be useful? :?:

The Auld Grump, who will likely do that with the Maiden and CWU.

I decided to give this a try. But 2 things:

1 there isn't one for CWC/DWC

Edit: It started working I don't know why. I changed nothing, didn't even go back to the profile page.

2 It doesn't seem to work for me. This is what I typed:

I have others but I haven't bothered doing them with it not working. What am I doing wrong?

I've had problems getting actual images to display in my messages too. Some times it works but not always.

Looks good to me LD. You may have to clear your cache.

I don't think thats it. I added the code, then updated my profile, and checked an old post but it wasn't present. But they came up when I submitted that post asking for help.

Like I said this happens with images in my messages. In one post I tried to display 2 images. 1 worked but not the other. In a different post, I again displayed both images, no variation in the code, this time both worked.

You're right about CastleWorks Classic though, I'll add that later tonight.

In terms of the images not displaying I can only make a guess that its a refresh issue. I'm not the best person to ask about anything more technical than that :oops:

The first time I added a signature in my profile and checked to always append it to my post... it didn't take immediately. I tried refreshing, and it didn't work. I logged out, came back later, and it was there.

Clear your cache, or even reboot, and it should clear it up

In an ideal world (if I had any programing chops to speak of) we'd have this set up as some kind of applet that would allow you to point and click selections. The selections would then be added into a table and the product page links would be embedded automatically. This would spit out a pregenerated string of code that you would then just copy and paste. That would also feed off the WorldWorks server somehow in an embedded format so that we could get around the signature limitations on other message boards.

The current method is a good quick and dirty solution for our local group here but it certainly could stand some improvements.

Hmm, one suggestion when using these "Proud owner of..." badges is that when you are entering the codes, hit ENTER after every 5 or so. All the threads are getting really stretched out by those that list them all in one line. I'm not picking on anyone, but I did notice Floydski has a lot line...

It is hard to edit the text though in such a tiny box... which I know is the standard PHPBB template so I don't believe its easy to modify. I know admins do not have time amend these signatures for people... so hopefully they will do this themselves

A VERY good point. I added a note about this at the top of the thread. If you see extra long sigs out there please give a gentle nudge to your fellow man to fix it up.

You mean Hellworks, Marina, Wormhole, Uncharted Space, Mayhem PD, Urban Grind... etc. ?

BTW, I think 5 wide in your sig is ideal, as it's easy to count up... but 6 should be the max as it's about the same width as a standard signature image. While it looks cool to break it out by genre, it's stretching all the posts out

I haven't seen Hellworks on the WIP yet, but I've heard it mentioned a couple of times.

Thanks for editing your sig... it looks much better. I just finished linking all of mine... my eyes are a little crossed now... but it leads me into my second tip.

TIP 2
Instead of trying to write all that code in the tiny box on your profile, open up a new post, and build the signature code there. You can save a lot of time by
- pasting the URL of the image
- highlighting the text of the URL and clicking the [*IMG] button
- highlight the whole thing including the [*IMG] and [*/IMG] tags and click the [*URL] button.

Then you are done, unless you want to go the extra step and link them to the product pages. Even if you do, you still have an easier time doing it here. Anyway, one last step is

- copy the whole lot, click "Profile" at the top, and paste it all into your signature box.

Yikes, that must have hurt your brain. This has me thinking, we should create "sig code sets" for each genre. Basically a pre-generated signature with every single product image and associated link. Instead of building up the code people would copy and paste these sets and delete items they don't have from the code.

Unfortunatley that's something I don't have time for right now...lol.

Heh, well if you want that, I have most of it done already in my signature... and could easily do the others as well. Of course, I can't paste it as copyable code since the forum will translate it. Let me know... I can always email you with the code. I would PM it, but the same translation problem would occur.

There must be a way to post code without it translating...I've seen someone do that before. We need Robby's brain on this.
