Recently I've been looking for new games to use with my WW sets. But there are several issues that disqualify most of the games I know of.

I'm looking for a light RPG, that has premade quests. None of the people I game with are really able, or interested, in creating our own quests. Heroesquest is probably the best example of what kind of game I'm looking for. Although its a bit too simple.

Its very hard for me to arrange times to play with other people. So I really want a game that is short. Ideally under 2 hours. But a longer game might do, assuming its fun enough.

Cost is also an issue. I'm on a tight budget so I'm unlikely to spend more than $50 on a game I've never played.

Preference is given to games that have a min. of 2 players. If I need more than that I'd be lucky to play it once a month.

Now as my signature shows I really only have fantasy sets. That is true for my figures as well, so that is the genre I'm looking for.

Anyone played anything along those lines?

Hm...I think that one might come in handy for me, as well!

Advanced Heroquest takes it a bit further than the original Heroquest, as does Warhammer Quest... but both are pretty expensive to pick up on Ebay these days. I'm hoping that Dungeonlinx Adventures will be this kind of thing too.

I tend to pick up a lot of board games and one fairly quick game my wife and I enjoy is Candamir: The First Settlers by Mayfair Games. It's one of the Settlers of Catan world games, but makes a mini rpg and some strategy into a board game which is a lot of fun. It's a one off though... you start from scratch the next time you play.

You can try playing Dungeon Bash which uses D&D 3.5. Not a light system, but DB comes with pre-gens of various levels and dungeon and monster generators. Its a pretty cool little supplement.

The Savage Worlds adventure Noble Deceit is also a dungeon crawl that would look great with WWG terrain.

Yeah, theres a bunch of games I'd love to try that are super expensive.
I've never played a board game I thought was worth $250!

Legends of Araby from TwoHourWargames is RPG Light. It will play with one or more players and has a built in quest / encounter system. It is more wargame than RPG but may well stand you in good stead if you are willing to bridge the gaps with your own narrative. The main problem I would see in it for you is that it is geared towards an Arabian Nights setting, which may necessitate some changes to the background or reworking of some of the encounters to suit the sets you have. On the other hand, that is not really a huge problem at all IMO. Check it out here:

An RPG that might suit is Rune: The Game of Viking Mayhem from Atlas Games. I have not played it, but do have the rules and am looking forward to trying it (as research for my PhD, honest). The game is set up as a series of encounters and each player takes turns in running one of the encounteres. This means that all players get to play characters and GM. It is competitive with all involved scoring points and having a chance to win at the end of the session. I don't see why it would not work with one GM and one player as the encounters are matched to the skills of the characters.

Finally, why not just take a standard D&D module and run it like a skirmish wargame? Set up the dungeon using your WWG sets. The player creates their party and runs through it. You can roleplay encounters as needed, but don't have to, since the reaction tables could govern a lot of that for you. I have done this with Basic D&D and it worked really well. Characterisation? Pah, who needs that? I have an axe.

Right, which is about the same cost or cheaper than a typical WWG set when it is all said and done.

I've looked at Descent. And the cost isn't the reason I've held off. IconUSA is got for $60 and $10 shipping. Its more than I want to spend ideally but with all the minis and the preprinted floors, I would make an excpetion.

The problem is that several reviews I've read had problems with difficulty balance. That once the heroes get silver and gold level weapons they're unstopable.

But the real issue is the time. Descent is supposed to be really long. Some people said their games ran 8 hours. That kind of time is a problem. Not only is it really hard to scedule, but I find that even at 4 hours people just want it to end.





Like I mentoned, light RPGs are ideal. My group doesn't need heavy narration. Simply a brief description that outlines the scenario, and a little to tie it in with other quests. Character back stories aren't important, nor do we play in character. We simply like to do some level building.

I do really like the idea of the games that don't require a GM. I found a free ruleset that has player control the monsters when its not their turn. I think its a great method. Not only does it keep the players involved when its not their turn, it also lets people off GM duty. My group takes turns GMing, no one prefers it to playing. Its a game I want to try out for random skirmish situations.

I've never played DD. Years ago I read the rules though. From what I recall I think that its too complicated. Way too much information for a group that doesn't like playing in character. Also I think all those stats would tend to make the games slower.

I have never heard of that Descent game before. For $60 it looks like a deal as you get a lot with it.

I think it depends on the set. It cost me over $100 to do CWU. And now that I got a printer with seperate color cartriges I probably use 2-2.5 cartriges a set at $13 a piece, color $22, plus half to a whole pack paper, $6-12. And foamboard, glue, blades, markers. If you print transpariencies thats much more.

So WW is a bit cheaper, sometimes, but WW doesn't have figures, usually.

Heh, this was mentioned by me above, and seconded by LD2062 Nobody knows anything about it yet, other than that it will use DungeonLinx tiles.

I do have to say that the Savage Worlds adventure, Against the Orcs, looks like a lot of fun... and I really love that the adventure comes with the standees in the same art used through the module. I haven't read the module but from glancing over it, it's something I would love to play, which is why I stopped myself reading anything that would destroy the adventure for me. Perhaps Kane or Nostromo will run this fun me sometime?

Anytime. I got tons of 'other' terrain and goodies to be able to throw this together. I have been getting into SW lately too and have played a few modern sessions with it so i know the rules pretty well.

Just let me know when and I am there. It sounds like you guys are busier than I am so just let me know when and I can usually make it. I would love to GM it. I also plan on picking up noble desceit due to the plugs here and reviews elsewhere so we can run that as well.

Against the Orcs is a great adventure in that it is designed for beginners to teach them the system. The veterans will find a lot to like as well.

Actually, I always preferred roleplaying before the characters become all powerful. I really enjoyed fighting orcs, helping villagers, being attacked by a pack of wolves, smashing skeletons with my mace, etc. Most roleplaying (not including PC games) gets boring for me when you get into the realms of slaying dragons, fighting huge battles, crossing other planes of existance, killing (?) deities... etc.

Kane and Nostromo, I thank you both for offering. I don't want to cause any problems and would be happy with either one of you running it... though if one of you has already run it, the other might like to play instead?

I think Warhammer Quest hits it pretty right for me. Though it's expensive on e-bay.
The not requiring a GM part is the bit that puts it up a notch for me.

I think this topic will be nicely covered by Two Hour Wargames up and coming fantasy game(s). We might get some info on it once the author has moved house.

You might also consider checking out Castles & Crusades. Its a d20 game that is basically a clone of 1e AD&D with updated mechanics (removing a lot of the tables and the inconsistencies and wonkiness of AD&D). It plays very fast, and is pretty rules light - plus its quickly familiar if you've ever played any edition of D&D.

For quests, you can just get modules. 1e modules, 2e modules, 3e modules (I'm using a lot of Dungeon Crawl Classics in my C&C games) - they all convert pretty easily.

Best of all, its cheap. The C&C Player's Handbook (the only book you really need) is $20, or $13 if you get the 2nd printing at Amazon. You can get the Monsters & Treasure book (if you want to splurge) for another $13, and modules will typically run you about $10 each. With C&C's speed, you could probably finish a typical module in 2-3 2 hour sessions, perhaps even quicker depending on your players and how RPish vs. tactically you played.
