I've decided that the next game I'm going to focus my attention on is All Things Zombie: Better Dead Then Zed. It's a pretty fun game, though I still have a bit to go before I have the rules down.

The scale of gaming I'm used to is a bit different than what this game really calls for, so I've decided to try my hand at 15mm scale. I usually play with paper all the way--terrain & minis both, but I just recently bought some 15mm minis (zombies and survivors) from Rebel Minis, and now I'm commited.

I've just begun, but here is a couple of shots:

So far, my plan is to do board pieces that are 2 tiles by 3 tiles based on foam board, or some multiple of the above when I want to do larger buildings (perhaps 4 x 3 or maybe 2 x 6). My first plan calls for 20 board pieces--10 x 12 "tiles." It will fit on my breakfast bar. If I built it at regular Mayhem scale, it would take up a good chunk of my living room floor, hence, the 15mm scale.

I still have a long way to go, but this is a good start.

15mm is my favourite scale - you have the detail at a glance of +25mm but with the added bonus of a Grander sense of gameplay. As you will find you can knock together some very nice city suburbs not just a couple of blocks.

For me this is what WH40K should have been, it would make more tactical fun being able to field a full cityfight table on the kitchen.


Nice work there. You might want to make the building in lots of two levels - even if you are not going to game the internals it just makes it easier to reach between the buildings.

Also think about making up your tiles with a linX tab to connect them.

I have also purchased ATZ and currently reading through the rules. To me, they are kinda straight forward, but confusing at the same time. I also played HorrorClix and built this map. I am planning to use the same map for when I go Campaign with ATZ and get some more Zeds. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for the advice Lord Abbadon, I think that I will probably have more 1-2 storey buildings than 3+. Not only for the ease of reaching in with hands, but also because I want this first build to have more of an suburban feel, not so much an urban one. I did think about the linX tabs for a couple of hours yesterday. I've decided not to with this first build, just to speed up the process. However, if I decide that I really like building with this scale, I will introduce the tabs in future builds.

Nice build gleemonex69! Did you use photo paper? It looks like it to me. If so, what kind? I tried some earlier this year with some paper minis, but had a problem with the ink coming off on my fingers when handling them. Have you had that problem?

Nice little Mechwarrior map, Highland Piper! I especially like the highway--I'm weird like that.

In the pic I posted with the building, the building is not attached yet. I've been toying with the idea of basing the buildings on a piece of cardstock, but not gluing them to the board pieces. I could just thumbtack them down (if needed) before putting on the roof, and change them out with each game. This would add to my terrain set-up flexability.

I would like to do interiors because the rules allow for the searching of buildings for supplies and zombie/survivor encounters, but I'm not sure on how practical it is at this scale. Any input, guys & gals?

Still have several ideas I need to work out Any advice would be welcomed.

A while ago, I bought the game Zombies!!! from Twilight Creations and started building the game at the same scale, but using Mayhem building sets.

I stopped because I didn't like the means of connecting the different game tiles. With the release of TerrainLinx, I think I'm going to revisit it with a whole lot better results!

Thanks for the comment! Actually, I didn't use photo paper. I used an inkjet printer, using 110 Lb. paper. I forgot to change the setting in the printer and it gave me glossy printouts.

Your build looks good. By how much do you have to reduce the textures to get them to go with 15 mm miniatures?

Great stuff!!! Working with smaller scales can really give a new dimension to gaming. Looking forward to seeing the completed build in use with lotsa Zombies running around!!

I made up a small Mayhem board for a diorama a while back. I wouldn't recommend going this small...... too bloody fiddly to assemble LOL

I used High-Resolution Paper, to retain the texture detail, but also thin enough to allow construction.





I did plan to build a terrain set in 15mm last year to run an Oriental game, but after printing out all the buildings, I never found the time to actually construct the stuff..... maybe later!!

I was looking at your first pic trying to figure out what 'scale' it was (I didn't even notice in the first pick that it was part of a diorama yet; I thought it WAS the diorama! Then I saw the second pic and was like

gleemonex69 -- Reducing to 15mm scale. Actually, what I have done isn't necessarily perfect for 15mm. When I looked at my gaming space, I decided what I wanted were tiles that were about 3"x3." Since I decided to make each of my game board pieces 2x3 tiles (or a multiple of 2x3), that made each game board piece, 6" x 9". My gaming space is about 32" x 37", so my boards will be 5 x 4, or 30" x 36." Considering that I'm just going to cut all ranges for ATZ in half, that makes quite a sizable playing area. Now, I sat down and did some math to make it that scale, but for some reason, my first tile set came out smaller than what I wanted. I checked my math and it seemed right, but my second printing still didn't come out. So I took the long way. I figured the difference between what I was printing and what I wanted and just readjusted my "reduced" files. Here's how it goes. I reduce the each page of the needed PDFs to 40%. Then I resize it again to 107%. Sounds complicated, but it's worked so far for me. Again, it probably isn't perfect for 15mm, but I works for what I'm trying to do.

Shinobi -- I remember when you posted that pic the first time. All I could think of was, WOW. That is such an awesome idea, thanks for posting it again for those who may have missed it the first time around. I agree that smaller scales do change up gaming a bit. ATZ is as much about scavaging for needed supplies and fellow humans as it is about kicking some zombie buttocks. Having more playing field just adds to that. Also, since it is possible to have/find vehicles in the game, the larger gaming area gives more opportunity for craziness than a smaller one in which the survivors are off the map in 1-2 turns. If I had space/time/energy/resources, what I would love to do is build something on the scale of Liberty City in GTA4. To me, the City makes the game. It is a real, live 3D city. However, I'm happy with where I think this will take me and my players. Thanks again for reposting those pics

Can you image the scope of filling a 6'x4' tabletop with a 6mm scale city...... would sure be a lot of work, but the vehicles and helicopters would rule!! It would be like the original Grand Theft Auto games.

I have a load of 6mm (1/300) scale WW2 and Ancients figures somewhere......... hmmmmm WW2......... 6mm scale city..........

Totally n00b question: How do you get multiple, re-sized tiles to print on one page using Gimp? Thanks for your help.

I would like to know the answer to Gleemonex's question as well..I just started using GIMP. I also just purchased the Ambush alley Z starter set from Rebel minis.. so I will need to scale everything down to 15mm

I don't know if it works the same way as in Photoshop, but just open the .pdf in Gimp do a image resize to the appropriate scale. Make a new full page document and copy/paste your resized images into the new document editing out space and whatnot as needed.
