Just finished off a big quest in my home D&D game.

Of course big quests, with big bosses need big builds.

The build is 5x7 6" tiles, and 2 layers high in places. Most of the middle section is raised and can be passed under.

The monsters were Games Workshop Tyranid Raveners and a Trygon.

For reference, the table we're at is 6.5 by 4.5 feet. Bought it special to have extra room for gaming. The extra width really makes a difference.

Overall, it was a good game session. There were a couple really close calls with the party, at one point the druid was five points away from dead-dead. Despite the hardships, there was a lot of laughter and fun as they worked their way through the critters and saved the world. Again.

EDIT: Yea, the poor tiefling. Got picked up and carried all over the place. When the monster died, he was still being held and nearly went off a cliff.

Do you find that table size preferable or too large to be practical with arm length?

That build is fantastic! I'm extremely jealous!

I prefer the table as it is. Sometimes you have to stand to reach, or move a mini on behalf of someone else, but it makes up for it with pure room for dice and maps and character sheets and chips and drinks and ... and ... and ...

Elbow room is always nice. My players tend to prefer a little elbow room to additional tiles. I leave about a tile to a tile and a half of room around the table to give space to everyone. I wish my table was larger though as that leaves our playable area to something like 4 or 5 tiles by 6 tiles.

I've always wanted a table that folds out to supersize if need be.. ooh! with drawers underneath to hold stuff.. maybe a designated cup holder.. speakers.. lcd screen .. .

I have a dining table that has many size variations. It is a family antique and made of maple. Right now it is conformed at its smallest footprint of 2'6"x4'6". On Christmas day it will be at its largest, 4'6"x11' and seats 12 very comfortably. What makes it possible is 4 insert panels, two large drop leafs, four adjustable (sliding) legs beside the four fixed legs. We had large families in my time, and yes, large rooms. It was my Grandmother's originally and my mother kept it no matter how hard the times became. Providence had it in storage when a fire burned down my home two years ago. It is meant to stay in the family it seems.

It never occured to me to use it as a gaming table, but I suppose it could be at some time after I am gone. Anyway, for those who wish a game table and yet a smaller table as well, you might want to study the table designs around 1880 - 1920s. The gearing and slide mechanicals are top notch ... elegant in fact.

BTW, that is a great build with the garden.

That's a lot of inserts and extra legs.

Problem with doing a build like this is now I gotta figure out something bigger/faster/better for next time.

I confess I found the effect a little spoiled by the hard transitions between the different sets (Hinterlands - Himmelveil Streets - Garden), which is nothing to do with the build, just a consequence of the differences between the ground tiles. The Streets - Garden transition in particular looks like it should match up but doesn't.
I'm really looking forward to a TLX solution that makes transitions between sets look natural.

But just have to repeat - great build!

A wall with an archway could do the trick for transitioning between Streets and Gardens...at least barring a more robust solution.

Those tables are just wrong and a perfect pairing with TLX.

As over the top as they are, those tables have always made me drool. Same with the over-head projection setups to compliment my cardstock terrain.

For a few months I was working on a bottom-projected table (think the MS Surface) coupled with some smart gametable software to track initiative order, line of sight and a bunch of other stuff. I gave up when I realized that even if I could get the whole thing up and running, there would be no way to commercialize it - WoTC's license basically forbids any third party tools without buying a license and paying royalties to them (which, to date, they haven't granted to any third party tools I'm aware of)

Dude, WoTC is does not have a hold on most of that stuff. Just keep it generic and you could commercialize the heck out of it. Most of the basics stuff like LOS, Int. order and the like are easy to generify. I suspect my DM would love to buy something like the, and he could probably afford it.

Those are spell markers. They're thin and they mark the corners of a spell zone and can remain in play for a turn or so to remind you what you just set on fire.

The street tiles were a last minute addition to join the "outside" forest with the "inside" garden. I simply wanted some way to abstract the drop in elevation and distance. I need a "100 feet winding down a cave" set.

Those are nifty! I may have to pick some up. It is difficult to justify since it has been so long since we have played. I miss it...

Also, those corner markers could be easily made with card. I might try and knock a few together, theyre such a simple idea.

The corner markers are one of those ideas that you look at and go "why didn't I think of that?" Given the number of persistant zones that my party can throw around, they're very useful.

They'd be trivially easy to do via cardstock.

There are a few problems there - the cost for a single table would probably run somewhere between $1000-$1500 to build (short-throw projector, mirror, table, frosted acrylic tabletop...) meaning that in order to turn a profit they would have to sell for $3k-$4k each. Compared to a MS Surface installation that's practically giving it away, but the potential customer base at that price point is very small. Add in the software development costs (my time isn't free, after all) and you run into a very real problem with not being able to recoup R&D costs. Sure - I could build one for myself (if we had a spare room to hold it) but it's not likely.
It's fun to dream of the possibilities (fiducial markers on the bottom of the mini bases so the computer can track what is moved when, "soft" done buttons for each player's turn, complete recording of the encounter for later playback and analysis, future expansion by selling new NPC/PC markers and maps...) but the reality is that it wouldn't work as a business. I've seen some really cool hobbyist builds, but for my time and money I'm better off building out a huge TLX set and buying a big table.
