I'd tried some metal cut from thin sheets previously for my tile-to-tile connections and was massively disappointed with it, so I haven't looked further. I was basically trying to use that metal in the side of 1 tile and a magnet in the other tile, but the hold was pathetic. I had the similar results trying to use that FlexIron stuff that I like for that purpose, too, though. I'm not sure how the thickness of what I tried compares with what you linked, though. What I tried was not real easy to cut, either, so I could see that being more work than it's worth.

I'd be curious to know if you try it and how well it works.

Since you're using this just to hold a wrapper in place, I think it has a different need for strength than trying to get magnetized sides to replace biscuit joins.

For myself, I'm looking at making mat board pieces to add a second floor to a build, but I think I'm going to stick with making SS-style boxes instead.

Just now, I tried that fridge magnet material with this and it's an awfully weak bond. That stuff is thinner than the stuff you linked, but I worry about the added weight with much thicker stuff--if it even helps enough.

My ideal solution would be to print the tiles on a 3D printer and figure out a way that the wrapper flaps just slide into some slot or have a 3D printed piece that snaps on that keeps it in place. I've got a gaming friend who allegedly has a 3D printer and doesn't do anything with it. Maybe I should see if he'll let me test out some ideas with it.

That's the kind of idea I'm trying to sketch out, too. I've got a buddy with TWO idle 3d printers... it'd be neat to have printable 'skeleton' tiles that you can easily slip printed skins onto. Ditto for walls and stuff.

Gonna start assembling it today. Still gotta do the stairs and a few misc pieces, but this'll help me figure out if I need to come up with anything else to make this work.

That looks ... like an awesome start. Just from the ad artwork and looking at the pdfs, I didn't realize how this set was really going to pan out. Great!

When I *finally* get around to doing my own pyramid it will definitely have to be on photo paper.

Can someone tell me why in the heck WWG actually included a back texture for the corner pieces for a pyramid? If you assemble it and insert it into a post, NO ONE CAN SEE IT!

So, I decided to add another 6" to each side of my pyramid. It'll make it easier to center the stairs that extend out in the front and will give me a bit more room for the castle on top, which I think I'll need since I'm doing 1.5" squares. The dang thing is 4.5 feet per side now. I don't think I'm gonna build tiles and walls enough to fill it up anytime soon, so I started building an internal support frame to allow me to put the next levels on.

I found that I had 2 Elmer's foam boards that were 30"x40" that I'd picked up at Staples or Office Max or somewhere a couple of months ago. They've got an odd sort of finish to them, so I picked them to up to try them out with some builds sometime. Turns out, they were really nicely sized for that support frame for my pyramid. So, I spent a few hours yesterday and today working on that. Sadly, I ran out of that foam board and still needed some more. So, I took a trip to Staples and Office Max and couldn't find that same stuff at either place. I can't even find that stuff online in smaller than 10 sheet packs. I ended up picking up a 30x40 Staples-branded board to finish it. Man, is that stuff cheap junk. Oh, well, it worked well enough.

I keep having this issue with the corner pieces:



I gotta come up with a solution to that. I'm thinking of inserting something under that corner that I can glue a spare magnet to, so it'll stick to the tile. I guess I could also just put a bottom on the whole corner piece 'cuz no one is going to ever see the inside of it, even though it's got a printed texture. That just seems wrong, somehow, though.

It almost looks like the outer faces of the corner wall should be scored 1 - 2 mm closer to the middle. If the outer faces are too big, then it'll necessarily pinch outward.

I only built a handful of pyramid pieces, and I think they sat fine, but it was a long time ago. You might consider scoring a little off the scoreline there, and then shave the parts that slot into the post down a bit, and see if that makes it better.

So, I almost had all the extra tiles done, but I ran out of time this weekend. I had them almost completely glued, so I'm bummed I didn't finish. I had to catch a flight to San Francisco today in order to attend VMWorld this week. So, that's gonna delay me a bit. Still, I should be able to finish the pyramid by Saturday or so--except for the stairs. Those will take a little more work, but are next on the list.

Finally got all the tiles done. Ran out of posts. And slanted walls. Need to build some simple 6" walls, too. But here's the progress thus far:


I started modifying the stairs and printing out the first attempt at one. And I'm working to fill in the obvious gaps that you can see in that picture.

This thing is freakin' huge. 4.5 feet on each side might be too big to be practical, but I'm forging ahead, anyways. 1.5" squares really necessitates building more. Wish I didn't feel the need to use that scale, but so many minis made by WotC and Paizo just don't fit in a 1" square--especially when you start putting walls and props in there.

That is REALLY starting to look impressive!

I ran out of magnets for my posts, so I substituted some that I made for Thoumonts while I'm waiting for a new shipment to arrive.

Working on the stairs at present. I'm thinking about kitbashing some 6" wide ones, rather than make twice as many 3" wide ones. Not sure if I'll have to add in extra support in the middle to prevent the steps from sagging, though. And I'm adding in a few little features that'll eliminate the breaks int the steps that you'd normally see at each floor.

Sadly, I have to tear down all that I've assembled tonight. Tomorrow is our next session of Curse of the Crimson Throne and I want this build to be a surprise when they finally get to the final chapter of the story.
