I've been dragging my feet for too long, but I finally made some decent progress on the city portion of the build:



This month's session is canceled because our one big convention, Con of the North, is this weekend. Yes, it's held every year on the closest weekend to Valentine's Day.

Wow - that many foamcore floors cut? I am intimidated. Cutting foamcore is just one of those things I am always putting off - seeming never getting the gumption up to get started. Once I have my workspace cleared and get going, I can do a bunch. I've got some cutting necessary (that I was planning on doing last night - but didn't get to!) for Swampworks. I'm putting a set together for my grandson's birthday end of next month. Yes, I know it's sneaking up on me - but yesterday at work I was a cutting fool for the swampland ground. I'm going to be mounting four of them on 14" square tiles. Everything has to fit into my luggage as I am flying to Detroit. All the 3D parts will have to travel flat and be glued overnight - but I have two 'evenings' for that before the birthday party.

So... I sympathize with your trying to get this done for your upcoming game!

I've slowed of late as I've had to invest time in modifying the WWG floor tiles to remove anchors and all the typical TLX stuff like the slots on the sides for Linx Tabs. The most work was definitely some of the Shellendrak West Wing tiles, but I think I did a decent job:

So, I'm starting to use Shellendrak West Wing to make some of the manors in my city and I've noticed something really weird about the exterior 6" walls for that set. For some of them, the exterior face, the one with the stones, the texture was flipped upside down between the normal wall and the anti-warp wall on the same page. But not all of them are like that. Take page 1 of Interior 6 Inch Walls.pdf, for example. The 2 walls on that page have their exterior side upside down from each other. Since there's sort of a pattern to the stones on that, I gotta think that this will create a really strange look to the building when you assemble it. Has anyone else noticed this? Anyone tried building with those? I could always edit the images to flip them back around, but if there's a reason it was done that way on purpose, I'd like to know.

It will seems strange, because the shadows will be upside down. I haven't built it, but I would recommend editing the image before printing to flip the image...

So, we had our monthly session yesterday and I think I've gotten another month to finish this up. During the adventure, one of the PCs got Plane Shifted to the Nine Hells by an Efreet fulfilling a wish for some mook. I completely didn't expect a 14th level cleric to fail a DC22 Will save, but she did. And now the party has to abandon Korvosa to travel to the 1st layer of Hell to rescue her. So, our next session will focus on that, most likely, and we're not meeting in April, so I probably have until June to get this thing finished and get it on the table. I can't slack off, though, 'cuz then I'd just let 2 months go by with nothing accomplished.

I'm making progress, but it's going slower than I would like. Here's the final batch of 150 posts for my city portion, in the works:

And THAT is why I can't do TLX. Hand cutting and hand assembling the posts will make me crazy. Well, more crazy. I wonder if the FBI is watching me here to?

If I didn't have a robocutter, I would have given up long time ago. Still, it ends up being a lot of work.

If you don't mind a white interior, posts that are only a single layer are much faster to build. If you DO mind a white interior, it still feels faster to me to spray-glue black paper to the back of my printed image, then cut and assemble as though it were a single layer. Especially with the robocutter, the process of edging is a time killer. I suspect you'd need to tweak the posts so that the one textured side has the glue tab, but if you're up for modifying your pieces, it may save some time.

Just something to consider...

It's been a long time since I've posted an update (site being down for months on end tends to do that...) but tomorrow is the big reveal. I'm frantically trying to finish the last few touches to the keep tonight. I'll post pics once the big reveal is done.

oo, oo, oo ... can't wait...

Well, the game session just ended. Everyone was pretty darn impressed with the build. It is freakin' massive. And insane. I totally don't know how to go 1/2 way.

Sadly, I realized only an hour before everyone arrived that I must have forgot to finish a few trusses and roof pieces for the city portion when I built all that a few months ago, so the end result isn't 100% what I had planned. Still, it's an impressive, although totally impractical, build.

I'm still going through all the pictures everyone took so I can find the good ones. I'll upload and post them here in the next day or two. At this point, I'm just so freakin' tired from the hard push over the last couple of days to get the last finishing touches done. Once I've slept, maybe I'll go back and quickly do those last few trusses that I missed. I'm too much of a perfectionist.

Here are some of the pics that show it off the best, I think. I had issues with 1 of the LED strips when I first showed it off to my players, so that's why the bottom floor isn't lit up on some. I redid the controllers and power supplies for those the today to fix that and re-took some pics. Of the 51 pics that we took the day we were playing, not a single one of them were while the party was actually fighting on the roof of the castle. It seems we're incapable of remembering to take pictures while we're actually playing. So, I did a quick recreation of that today.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I did the roofing and trusses several months ago and I must have forgotten to make a few trusses and railings for a few of the buildings. I sadly didn't realize this until about 1 hour before the players were set to arrive. So, it wasn't perfect, but I was out of time. The ones where you can see floors were supposed to be patios with railings and have trusses with doors going into the attic spaces.
