As mentioned elsewhere in a couple different threads, I was building a playset for my 9yo grandson, Lucas, for his birthday - for use with his Lego Star Wars figures and sets. Since I was flying [Peoria to Detroit], I had to have everything printed (and mostly cut and edged) - but unassembled - to be packed in my luggage. This is my result. Everything here was glued and assembled there over a four day/five evening period in between birthday and Easter activities and all the other family stuff.





My daughter (35) couldn't help but set the parts up after I had them done!

And of course, I could not resist setting up an appropriate iconic shot:


My initial goal was a larger set with seven trees and huts, but this ended up being a good size playset. It has four huts: one with a circular walk high in a tree, one mid-level with a circular walk, one mid-level atop a trunk, and one on the ground.

Some of the props can be seen - others are not in the pics. I only ended up with two ladders hidden in the foliage supports, one tall and one mid-level - but I guess it works.
BTW, extra tree top foliage makes great wild brush shrubbery!

I somehow left some of the printed sheets behind when I packed, so I was short some railings for the shorter overhead walkways. They still work fine as floating bridges over the watery swampy ground!

In advance of the trip, Lucas said he wanted to help, so he was able to get into the act with edging. (Hey, I got to start training him, eh?)



I made the eight ground tiles as mini-masterboards, each of four 7x7 grass tiles from Swampwoods. On the reverse sides, I made four of the boards with groundtiles from Mars Sation, and the other four with grassy scrubland groundtiles from the original Hinterlands.
(See how that all worked out with all those being from the old 7x7 tile format?)

I also made a couple of landing pads, using Chris Roe's Ebbles Landing Pad - one regular and one super-sized.



I GIMPed one quarter of the pad (both top and bottom) and scaled them up to about max size for the printable page. Of course, I had to increase the wall length. I doubled-up two walls, then stretched them the extra bit to get the right length - keeping the original height.



For extra support, I created two blank walls for underneath, with slots to form a cross:


I used foamcore top and bottom for extra sturdiness for these playset pieces.

Something else I incorporated was fencing:



I wanted the fencing to be freestanding. [Okay, to be honest, I really didn't want to have to put Hinterland TLX anchors all over the board! a) They wouldn't hold up over the long time because it IS a playset, and b) I was running short on prep-time before vacation)] So I created eight 1x6 inch strips from a 7x7 Hinterland grass tile, using two standard TLX corner anchors and a three-way post anchor at the midpoint, all along one side of the strip. The walls are mproteau's Orc Camp Palisades kitbash: 3- & 6-inch and arc walls (which work fine as linking walls between the strips). This gives the freedom of placing the walls anywhere on the boards, and not limited to right angles in specific spots.

This was an intensive undertaking, and not one I would have done if I had been driving cross country and been able to stuff a container tote in the back of the car. But, having done it, Lucas was very happy with his set (and that he got to help grandpa with it!), and my famliy now has intimate knowledge of what the heck I do with this paperstuff !

Wait... what? He doesn't have any Ewoks ?! ... Ebay, here I come!

Someone a long time ago posted the strategy of making portable TLX anchors by making a 1" textured circle with the anchor in the middle. Probably no less work than the strips you made, though by simply allowing anchors on the ends, you wouldn't be required to use a wall of the exact same length as the strip.

@mproteau: Whoever that was that had the idea for the 1" TLX post anchor bases, it was a good one! Imagine the TLX fence posts in the Old West settings for all those nice crooked fence lines.

Guess there is a close enough similarity... but probably more fun!

It was oldschooldm who did the posts, using foamcore as supports. I had suggested not using foamcore, but just some TLX anchors. He's got some great pics to show off the idea in action.
