I'll be printing up and building Thoumonts in the near future. Any tips and tricks specific to this set?

After building it here are some things I've found out...

If this is your first time building it just print off two of everything... you're going to mess up somewhere and who knows where. Either that or just have your printer warmed up ready to go so you can fire off a copy of whatever you mess up on as you need it.

Read the instructions through once or twice. Put a star by instructions that say NOTE as these are important not to mess up on. Identify optional window transparancy instructions (I put brackets around that text) so you can either quickly skip it if you are not going that route.

Print off the instructions in color; it really helps. I printed mine off in black and white some of the contrast gets washed out; made a few mistakes due to that right there. Had to look on a computer screen in color and even zoom in on some spots to really see what I was missing.

The wood panel that goes on top of the bay window which has light reflecting on it to simulate light coming through the window; that gets cut off, not scored, and is a seperate piece added. It's not a score and fold piece; only the little tabs get scored and folded.

Get familiar with the 'tab trap sandwitch fold' technique. This is where two pieces of the model need to be combined using tabs that get 'sandwitch folded' thus trapping the tab inbetween the sandwitch fold. One piece lays down flat and on each side is a tab. The other piece lays under the tab then sandwitch folded over top of the tab. I found it best to put a little glue on one side of the tab, lay the next piece right on top of the tab being careful to line up the textures and edges, then burnishing. Then I would flip it over, put a bit of glue on the other side of the tab and the rest of the glue surface, fold down the piece then burnish again.

I'm over at my inlaws using their nice printer =) Had some questions about this set...

Do I print out both gable and standard roof sets or just one of the two?

Do I print out both embelished and standard walls or just one of the two?

Do I print out the guide sheets on cardstock or regular paper?

I went with gabled roof and embelished walls.

This is by far the most complicated and difficult build yet that I've done. I spent hours on just the bay window! I'm still somewhat of a neophyte modeler but the instructions and model pages could use a little more detail in their descriptions and consistancy. I noticed a few places where dotted lines were missing where I was supposed to score, several places I had wished the instructions were a little more specfic, and even a typo

That being said; nothing was a show stopper. I've been working my way through it now steadily over the weekend. I'd say I'm about half done but the hardest half is over. Toughest parts so far are the bay window and the gabel roof. Had to reprint a couple pages due to mistakes which really sets me back because I don't have my own color printer

Overall though I'm happy with how it's going and turning out. It's a super sweet building, very rich textures and detail, and a challenge... as my friend said the other night... if it weren't a challenge it wouldn't be fun!

Finished! Well... mostly... =) Just need to do the props.

First floor with stairs and interior wall. Second story with two interior walls. Gabled roof with supports. All of this completed.

Quite happy with the final product. I'm sure the other players will be supprised to see it on the battle grid in a few weeks. They won't notice all of the little things that bother me =P Only complaint is somewhere I got off by 1/4" and it threw everything off. Most notably the floor tiles. Still haven't figured out what went wrong exactly. Somehow the back walls of the first floor were 1/4" too long and it was all down hill from there =( Even effected the upstairs as the sitars have to line up with the hole in the upstairs floor so I had to extend that floor a little bit which thus made a gap between the two seperate upstairs floor tiles.

Someday I'll build another one and it will be even better =)

Congratulations on the finished Thoumonts!

Having just done a more complicated building myself, there are just times when you need to make it work and keep going. Which you absolutely did, rock on. I love the glue tab fold and trap method in Mayhem Armory and a few other sets, but that's for 4 walls square - a fuller building feels like more of an accomplishment.

Some final thoughts on the build. I ended up just putting a short smoke stack on the pot belly stove. Couldn't bear to cut holes in the floor and roof and knew I wouldn't always want the stove in the same spot. In fact I just could find a good spot on the ground floor for it; which leads in to my next comment.

After throwing down some props in the main floor I noticed it gets cramped really fast. Between the counter, a couple book shelves, chest of drawers... there was no room for a stove if I wanted to leave room for PCs to move their minis around in there. Especially if there were to be other 'customers' in the shop at the same time. Not really a complaint; just an observation.

Thats an issue with the figures themselves. Those bases on the figure are 5' in scale. It would take a very large room to allow movement when each figure takes up that much room.
