Heh - my vampires warband once got stomped by one of my students. She had an Orc warband that consisted largely of goblins, who got into the gallery of the Cathedrae build, using their goblin bows to rain death upon the undead.

I didn't lose anybody permanently, but our fearsome battlecry for that engagement was 'Run away! Run away!'....

Just a thought, but if this player does get more interested in say miniatures... Teach a little dry brushing. Choas Black and white dry brushing looks great and is relatively fast to do.

I got her interested by telling her that unlike a lot of mini players, I don't demand or expect anyone to buy a bunch of expensive models to try out a game. Now that she likes it, she may invest in "real" 3D models. Maybe not. Either way, we are having fun.

Plus Jim's figures are REALLY nice for cardboard minis. Somehow it seems poetic to use them on a paper/card battlefield

Did he ever change the scale of his buildings? I built some back when they were a free download. Nice stuff but they all felt small. His ruins do look good. But the pics don't look like he uses foamcore. So I wonder if they are strong enough to use with metal minis.

He just started releasing a more contemporary set of ruins, I saw a set with a 'World War Ruins' category earlier today that looked pretty sharp....

My brother and I (and a few friends) looked at mordheim a while ago but were put of by the cost of models and the need to buy fantasy terrain while we were (are) still struggling to get enough sci-fi stuff together for 40k. That combined with an unsupported system eventually turned us away.

Having found paper WWG terrain and now a whole host of standees it's back on the cards.

How do you find the rule system? I've heard complaints about a few features that don't work so well leading to only a few viable lists for each race. Is this true? Is it easy to pick up and play without modifyinh things or do the rules need tweaking?

There are definitely bits in the Interior Works: Pubs & Inns that will see use. The stairs in particular can make a big difference in a Mordheim game. IW: C&K will also work well - I did a lot with it back when I was running a big (24 player) Mordheim campaign at a game store. (Probably my most productive period, terrain wise.)

Cathedrae Noctis is wonderfully useful, and saw my most humiliating defeat - by a twelve year old girl. She managed to get her goblins with bows up into the gallery, and... the results were brutal. No troll, not even many orcs... but a ton of goblins all raining death upon my warband.

It was wonderful.

We used Arena Works for the Pit Fights.

The best part of Option A is the save against serious injury. We added a house rule that henchmen wearing armor get that same roll against death - since they don't get to roll on the Serious Injuries chart. Considering how expensive armor is in the game it makes armor worth the cost.

Yeah, gromril is a pretty trap - but really not worth it. Even at half cost you could get several stout and sturdy clansmen. Numbers are more important than armor - less chance to bottle, more chances to hit, the ability to pursue more than one objective and to cover advances.

Until you have more than one wound armor does not do all that much good, either. (Or didn't until Option A at any rate.) More wounds is a greater chance of the armor doing its job. So armor for a Vampire (with 2 wounds) or a Minotaur (with 3) is a better investment - a 5-6 save has two or three chances to kick in, much better odds.

Option A really helps make armor worthwhile - kinda the point because in straight up Mordheim it really is not worth it. Our campaign went from everybody having two HtH weapons to a mix of two weapons an weapon an shield.

Buying armor as the campaign progresses is another matter - the ability for dwarfs in heavy armor at the same speed as a naked Slayer or a heavily armored human merc lessens one of the chief weaknesses of the dwarfs - their low movement. GW has routinely under rated mobility and overvalued Leadership and Initiative.

For Empire in Flames I recommend adding houserules for dwarfen war rams, if only so you can use this Reaper miniature when it comes out:


They also have bear and boar riders, but those seem a trifle... risky.
