Hey all,
I need to make some rocks for my Dark Sun game. They'll range in size from 1"x2" to about 6"x6" and height from 1-3".
I'd really like to be able to customize the shape so I can make rocks to fit on the marked areas of my Desert of Athas Dungeon Tiles.

I don't need a space station, but the Mars Station set touts the canyon system as worth the price itself. OTOH, I may be able to use more of the Caveworks set in a future project, but I can't tell if it will let me make the rocks I want.

Both sets are old releases yet a bit pricey when compared to the new stuff.

Any thoughts on either of these sets or another one I haven't considered?

Back to my request for a rockbuilder....

I use the rocks from Hinterlands mainly. There are a number of cliffs and such available. It is grassland setting though, not deert for DarkSun. The Mars set may be best. The Western set Denny is working on might have some option, but that is an unannounced release date, and hasn't even got the Denny mystical Soon label yet. OTO I would assume the western would be more of the Southwest type of setup where there is quite a bit of life in the desert, again not DarkSun in which all life has pretty much been drained from the desert. I keep coming back to Mars Station.

I think Mars Station is your best bet, even if you don't use the station aspects. However, you might also look at Hellworks. It's not as desert-y, but it has a definite Dark Sun vibe, and has cliffs and rocks and such, and can be fairly versatile.

I know you didn't ask this, but another oldie that might be useful, more for desert washed buildings (not rocks) is ArenaWorks. It's still one of my favorite sets.

Mars Station and / or Hinterlands.

Mars Station are one basic color (Rust).

Hinterlands offers normal earth based rocks.

Since you are using Dark Sun, the tiles from Mars Station would be very good, but normal big rocks from Hinterlands would be good to break up what Mars station provides.

Now I'm EXTREMELY BIASED towards Mars station. It is the set that got me into World Works and a MASSIVE FANBOY of Paul's work.

I played Dark Sun the first time around (was that really almost 20 years ago?) and I think the Mars terrain would be the most like the original artwork by Brom. I'm not sure if the look and vibe has changed since then, but that would be my suggestion. ArenaWorks would be the next necessity, because IIRC characters wound up in the arena a lot lol!

Thanks for all the advice, everyone! I think Mars Station is the solution... but I think I will put it on hold. Instead, I hope to use Thoumont's TLX to make the buildings for the next season of D&D Encounters! But that's for another thread...
