RPG to involve a chronically sick person

Welcome to the forum! And welcome to a new and immensely enjoyable hobby.

I would recommend looking at two different games. D&D Miniatures and Savage Worlds.

D&D Miniatures: - Note I'm not talking D&D RPG proper, but there is a subset of the game that is just a miniature game, simulating small scale skirmishes (6-12 pieces per side, usually). The figures are plastic and prepainted (although I'm told they repaint well), and the rules are fairly simple. You can see the . D&D minis are available in the UK.

Savage Worlds - This is both an RGP and a minis game. I'm in the process of converting lock, stock and barrell from D&D to Savage Worlds. The motto of the game is Fast! Fun! Furious! and that really is a core idea behind the game. Its very cinematic in feel - unlike most games I've played, you can watch pretty much any movie and think, "yeah, I could do that in Savage Worlds". The minis rules are simple but flexible enough that you can do a small scale skirmish like D&D or a large mass combat with hundreds of figures. You can find the . You should be able to find the books in the UK; they also sell PDF versions of their material (in fact, at the moment more is available via PDF than hardcover).

Hmmm, let us see now... STarting with Fantasy -

Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures have very simple rules. It uses squares for measurement, so Chunky should work fine. I ran a demo of it once, but have never bought any, having an allergy to random plastic figures.

Warhammer Quest could be called 'Beer & Pretzels' roleplay. The rules can be found free - the game itself is long out of print, and GW lost the CD with the board sections, so it is unlikely to see the light of day again.. However, using WW this will not be a huge problem.

The basic rules are bloody simple, the only dice needed are D6s. and the game does not need a GM, the dungeon is generated randomly as you play. However you will need to print up a bunch of cards for dungeon generation. If you can find the game cheap buy it, save yourself the hassle of printing the cards, and the miniatures are decent enough. This would likely be my first choice.

Mage Knight Dungeons is another possibility, you can find starter sets marked down considerable online. I have never played it, being allergic to random plastic figures, but I have seen it.

And the Star Wars Miniature game from WotC is also widely available and simple.

I'll second Savage Worlds.

It really is a simple system, and there are a lot of resources on the web for various settings, so you can pretty much play anything you want without having to learn a new set of rules every time you get a bug for a different setting.

If you want to get a feel for the skirmish rules, go to http://www.peginc.com and into the downloads section. You can grab the complete Showdown rules (which is the Savage Worlds skirmish rules) gratis. They also have "test drive" rules for the RPG there, and both of these should give you a feel for the overall game quite nicely.

I've been using WWG terrain for my Savage Worlds games, and various models in my collection (I'm an avid painter, too), and they work great. It really helps to have the visual aids that figures and WWG stuff provide, especially for "newbies" to gaming--my current group includes 2 players that have never played RPG or wargames before, and they got pretty comfortable with the rules after only 2-3 games.

If I was in the neighborhood I would love to pop by and set up CastleWorks Ultimate & Chunky Dungeons for you and your wife. Unfortunatly I'm stuck here on my little island

Many of us 70's D&D geeks lost our core gaming groups long ago and it can be really challenging to get a group together at our age. I tried to get my wife involved and while she enjoyed it we just couldnt seem to make time. Time is usually the big factor when life becomes chaotic for whatever reason.

Anyway, welcome and if you need anything just ask!

Hi magsman, welcome to the boards!

An occasional game at your place might be a good choice for you - sounds like you've got plenty of space for it, and your wife wouldn't need to leave the comforts of her own home.

You could start out inviting some of your existing circle of friends over for some board games. Anything - monopoly, risk, diplomacy, settlers of Catan - you name it.

Once you've got a gaming night going, there's a number of boardgames that can easily incorporate WWG scenery. I'm guessing your wife might enjoy an actual roleplaying game instead of a hack-and-slash boardgame though. But inviting some friends over for a boardgame is a good way to get them hooked, without needing to negotiate the "you wanna play what?" threshold right off the bat.

Hi and welcome to the inner circle of Denny's mind. This is one of the many reasons that he lives on an island.

Like the others have stated D&D Minis might be a good starting place, also Savage Worlds for an unfettered style of Gaming (very fun).

But reading your breif you stated that J. is an huge fan of "Charmed". So I give you to have a look over. Its free and a complete RPG, with other corebooks that link to this game that are also the best fun. This is a great system and is set in the modern world

The other game you might want to look at is , this game is set both in modern day London but at the sametime the Mythic past. The games system is really really cool - simply and elegant but works a treat, combat flows fast but at the same time its detailed like watching Matrix or Crouching Tiger (and if you haven't seen Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon then your both missing out! Get the DVD now). The game uses four simple aspects (Fire, Air, Earth, Water) to control all test and actions in the game.

The best thing is you get to design and play Dragons!

I was going to post Fireborn in the RPG section on this board, for I think UrbanMayham would work a treat with this game.

Both the games I have pointed out here are modern setting so your wife might have a better time relating to them.

Good game with a very Manga or Anima feel to it. Great settings and ideas, but being White Wolf - a great number of support materal that you have to have :wink:

You know, Witchcraft reminded me of another really fun game that kind of parallels Charmed - En Nomine. Its not minis based (purely RPG), and the rules are a little arbitrary, but it can be a wildly fun game, and runs a lot like the Charmed universe (think Charmed combined with the book Good Omens combined with the movie Dogma).

Me was thinking the same about Savaging En Nomine, great game nearly all flavor and fluff with little crunchiness. You should have a look a the Unisystem just for fun. If you have the time (and cash) you should look at . This system really does rock, but the first printing (and I don't know if there has been a second print yet) is flawed with bad editoring (12pages of dropped text or rewritten text). This is a sad fact which might have killed the game even before it gets off the ground. Fireborn's system would work perfectly with En Nomine.

I don't like the system for WW's stuff much anymore. Once did but we all change and grow. I like the setting for Exalted and the general feel, alas I have the limited ed. of this game (one of two book I own in this game), but I downloaded it anyway for reference and just to have. I believe that it might stick around for awhile longer than a week, I have a feeling that WW are trying to generate a wider target market by offering one of the core games for free. Eden had the same thought for Witchcraft.
