The ability to build UP with TLX has me considering options that would have otherwise not worked out for scenarios. Specifically, I find myself wanting to consider more movement and flow along the z-axis in my encounters.

I personally DM a Gamma World campaign involving an electro-roach and a radioactive hawkman, so flight and vertical movement could certainly be used in our games. My brother runs an ongoing D&D 4e campaign moving into paragon, so vertical movement may well become an issue there as well.

My question is this - what is the best way to handle free-flying for miniatures? Obviously 3d terrain works best for handling platforms, ramps, and so forth but how can I handle situations where the players aren't actually standing on a base?

I would prefer something that preserves the scale (1"=5'=1square) so the magnetic base markers are sort of out of the question. Something that's not an eyesore would also be great (clear with black lines or some other visible mark every 1" would be perfect!)

The only thing I've been able to think up would be to use some chipboard rectangular prisms of varying sizes (1x1x1, 1x1x2, 1x1x3, 2x2x1, 2x2x2, 2x2x3) covered with an appropriate WWG print-out, but that would also prevent any movement underneath (a rare case, to be sure). I could add diagonal supports in the center to hold up the heavier pewter minis and something heavy (25mmx25mmx2mm steel plate would certainly do) in one side to prevent the whole thing from being top-heavy. It would be functional but (again) I would really prefer something that also looks nice.

What I always do is use one of those clear plastic dice boxes. It allows me to raise the miniature and put a normal size miniature below it. It is also something that many of us gamers already have a bunch of anyway.

It will not allow for stacking more than 2 high and does not allow for real hight differences, but it does provide the illusion. If you really want true flying mounts you would have to use the stick stands they use for the flying games. I am not sure if you can buy them though or you have to make them yourself.
