D&D Encounters is finally providing me with the excuse I've been needing to get Thoumont's TLX. But first, a question:

Is Thoumont's (or even all TLX) based on multiples of 3"?
I'd like to replicate the D&D building tiles, but those are mostly 4x4. Will it be possible to make 4" walls, roofs, etc, with Thoumont's?

If so, I'm on it! If not, there is a competing product that provides the dimensions I'm looking for, but not the TLX snazzyness.

All TLX sets are based around a 3"x3" base grid. 3"x3" small floors, 6"x6" big floors and 3"x6" hallways.

HOWEVER!

All TLX sets also come in 1", 1.5" and gridless formats, meaning that a 3"x3" area is 9 1" squares but also 4 1.5" squares. So if you're willing to make the leap from actual inches to simply squares units of space then the 1.5" grid should suit your needs quite well.

I like the idea of using 1.5" squares with 28mm figs, but I'm not sure if I can make that leap. I'd like to just make walls and maybe roofs to frame in my Dungeon Tiles and printed maps.

Since I'm not planning on making TLX mount boards, can I just cut 2" off the 6" wall and roof pieces? Or will that totally mess with the art on them?

Yes it will. It'll also completely destroy the functionality of the set. TLX is all about the 3" core I'm afraid. More recent sets include "floating" walls that allow you to seperate floors further into 1", 1.5" and 2" divisions but I don't think there are any in Thoumonts.

While I don't quite buy the 1.5 argument either I do have to say that it is well worth getting Thoumont's TLX and the Streets. Heck, if you only bought those two then you will be well served.

That said, I would love to see an eventual expansion of the set, adding those floating walls.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to stick with 1" squares for now so I can just build wall for my tiles. Unfortunately, that means that Thoumont's won't work for this build. However, I will get it as soon as I make a build that either isn't tied to the tiles or doesn't use 4" walls.

Reaper...one thing you might want to consider is that the Players haven't seen your DM's maps. There's no reason (unless it's a particularly odd scenario) why the encounters have to exactly correspond to what the author's maps say.

You can figure out the path of the dungeon and approximate the layout. I distances may be different but the room arrangement will be the same. I did this for the last time I gamed The Keep on the Borderlands

This is what I do if I use a module. I get close to the layout and don't stress it being exact. I much prefer to have awesome terrain on the table than to conform to a map.

Yeah, you won't find any competing products that come anywhere close to WWG textures and attention to detail. I would reccomend just getting Thoumont's or HV Streets to start with, building a few bits, and then see how you like it. I think you'll be surprised in a good way
