I don't know of a "better" way to explain this.
Often you have a multi-story build, with larger areas that fail to have the walls needed to support upper areas as well. An differnt type of T clip could work wonders.
These T clips are an I clip, with a perpendicular clip below them, but the clip is rotated 90 degrees from the Normal T clip (I.E. it still sticks up/down compared to the I clip, but the opening at the top of the clip runs along the I'clip long part.
Here you could put a 6" railing, wall, or something else, and the added stability helps keep the floors from sagging due to lack of support.
