A little Hinterland/Himmelveil mashup. I made some Himmelveil Streets peek through a Hinterland grass tile, as a base tile for some ruined city remains.



I tried to add a little extra damage to the bricks showing through, though I might have been a little too subtle with it. I am going to do a couple other tiles for this concept - a couple with roads, one with a little less grass showing through, and certainly one with the Himmelveil streets trap door peeking through!

That's a great idea. I think you should show a little more of the street though.

Looking back, I think it made a good bit of difference adding dirt around a lot of the corners of the bricks, making things seem more aged. If I end up packaging these up for a submission, I'll add an extra layer of dirt on the exposed brick.

Yet another remark : to be more realistic, you should try to let the grass spur from the tiles junctions...

I agree totally. It dawns on me that I should have used the gridless grass tile rather than one with a grid on it. I've just been using a layer mask to let the streets show through, but with the grids the way they are, there's usually *dirt* at the tile intersections, not *grass*... I'll tinker a little more tonight.

Nice stuff! I would love to see some of these...maybe some with a little less grass? So they could be used with Himmelvale to show a less 'well-kept' area of town where grass pokes between the stones, as opposed to an overgrown ancient city where stones poke between the grass

I like the concept, but I'm not sure about the execution...
I was planning on making maybe TWO or THREE tiles for a ruined city. To make Himmelveil Streets tiles that are less clean would require choosing a reasonable subset of tiles to modify -- I don't think modifying *all* the street tiles would be OK to do for a kitbash. What would be a good subset of tiles to pick? I'll take a look at the "dirty streets" kitbash that was published to get some ideas for scope.
It's pretty straight-forward to make the tiles, so I'm not going to work on them. If I see that the kitbash process is moving forward, I'll gladly consider it. For now, I've got a couple other ideas for tying sets together that I want to try out...

Yep, that would be way too much. What I would like to see is blank1_6inch, blank2_6inch, blank _3inch, hall and fountain. But that's just me.

Well, I tried... A little, at least. Given my limited skills, it'll take me AGES to try to make enough grass come through that it'd look unkept, and the results still look pretty lousy. I can blend the large areas together well enough, but for small areas, it's really hard to not just end up with what looks like a bad photoshop job.

The other tiles I did were literally a couple minutes of work each. I'll have to gain some more skills before I can pull off making some grass peek through the bricks of the streets tiles, and be happy with the results.

If noone else pulls this off nicely, then maybe when I get more GIMP techniques under my belt I can try again!

I've cleared my plate of a lot of the tiles I have put together - they've been packaged up and submitted under the new guidelines. It allowed me to rediscover a couple kitbash ideas I hadn't seen through...

I've divided up the work I did for "Hintervale - Ruined City" into two different kitbashes, so I could focus on accomplishing two different things. What I'm focusing on right now are tiles that really are forest tiles, with some small bit of ancient civilization peeking through. I'm going to take another stab at a Himmelveil Destroyed set later, now that I've got more GIMP under my belt. (that just doesn't sound right, for some reason...) Anyhoo!

I'm tinkering with a couple pieces like this:






I think of these tiles as terrain plot hooks - I'm not looking to actually build a whole ruined city (not yet at least). I'm looking to make a player realize they've stumbled onto 'the spot' where something needs to go down. I like the dried-up and murky fountains... I'm going to try to add some leaves to the murky water in the fountain. The other two tiles... I will be cloning in some grass between the bricks in places to blend it in better. That will help a LOT. I'll also increase the grime (I added a little) to darken the bricks. What I think I will actually do is take the dirt that was originally there and superimpose it onto the bricks in some semi-opaque fashion.

Anyway, I just restarted this project. I'll work on this at work, while I do my CastleWorks buildings at home.

Perhaps a fountain that has brown stagnant water in it, in addition to the wonderful mossy green one you've created?

I am game. I'm gonna give it a go, though it's not something I can do a "quick and dirty" test of, so I have to wait for the planets to align (where "planets" are things like (a) I'm at home, (b) my kids aren't on my computers, (c) I'm not totally exhausted, (d) my wife doesn't have a todo list for me!) I really want to try, though! I want to do a full HV Streets - Destroyed set!


I think I'm going to make up pdf guide to simple kitbashing tricks with GIMP. The "skills" I have are rudimentary enough that it'd be great to get anyone interested in kitbashing familiar with the techniques. Assuming some of my submitted kitbashes are accepted, I'd like to do some walkthroughs of how some of the tiles were created. Do you think the WWG guys would be OK sharing something like that? Obviously the doc would have any textures (a) scaled down and of much lower quality than the real sets, (b) watermarked, (c) probably well cropped too.

I just discovered that overlaying the scrub at the bottom of the Hinterland Cliffs walls onto some destroyed Himmelveil Streets walls will kind of complete what I'm shooting for. I think with the tiles I've already laid out, and a couple posts and destroyed walls that have some grass growing up them, I will have my next kitbash submission! It's gonna be a hectic week for me, but hopefully by this weekend I'll be able to *build* some of these pieces and put up a promo pic.

I still need to work out the posts, but that should be easy. I made the wall in two types - a full 6", and these above that are broken in half, allowing for shorter ruined walls. I might go a step further and make some "prop" walls that have Hinterland bases and are free-standing.

You mean, like walls with bushes and trees spurIng from them ?

Remember, there are destroyed walls in mayhem destroyed. I suggest you stick to these "standards". Partly because we tried to include every possible element people would need in there and there’s no need to reinvent the wheel, partly because we already have cutfiles for those.

There's also ruined walls in the Lost Halls: Treasures and Tombs set (3" and 6", normal and double height) if you don't have the modern/Mayhem set.

@menace/Zenguy - the wall pic I posted was made from the Lost Halls broken wall. I have one version that conforms to it exactly (and the cutfiles work great as is). I always try to start with standard geometry (except for the half-height walls/posts... any other sets besides Shellendrak that has half-height posts?)

The wall pic I posted was the second variant that gets cut in the middle, so I can have broken wall pieces that don't have posts on both sides. I don't know if such a think exists in Mayhem, and I'm not about to buy the set just so I can keep my geometry in line with it... I've also seen that DeadFall has some walls like this, but the geometry is quite a bit different. In the end, I'll probably make my own destroyed wall shape that follows the lines of the bricks more. I always try to provide custom cut files for all the pieces if necessary - won't submit anything without them!

I snuck in a little "me" time this weekend and built a couple wall pieces, and made up a set of posts to go with it. The posts, like the walls, have some grass growing at the base.
