I was browsing the TLX wishlist forum and came across someone asking for a couple more types of river tiles. Part of the request was possibly straightening the "straight" river tile. The Hinterland Forests straight river is very bendy:



With a little bit of effort in GIMP, here's a straightened version:



Hmm... I might add in a stone or two, or a patch of dirt or something...

I'm going to review some of the other requests in the post and see if I can't figure out what else my skills can accomplish.

How small? You mean just making like a 5' island in the middle? I think I can manage that...

Here's something I just whipped up before I leave the office...

Now, I went the route of making the river bend UP but not DOWN. I could probably make it expand in both directions in order to make the island space wider. I'm really abusing the clone tools here... I will probably open up some of the other river tiles and start trying to pull some complimentary textures from other places, so I don't get such blatantly copied shores... (for example, take a look at the repeating pattern along the left side where the shoreline turns upward... There's a pattern that is repeating 3x there... Easy enough to fix in this case, but that's the kind of thing I will run into trying to clone my way through these tiles.

Regardless...these look great!

Color me river-blind, but I can't make out the triplicates. Fantastic job, mproteau!

Next you'll want diagonal to straight river transition, diagonal to diagonal junction, "Y" style river (diagonal to diagonal junction, leading to straight portion), etc, etc, etc...

But hey, if you want to do this, I'll gladly use them afterwards !!!

I'm a glutton for punishment, I guess... I'll risk soliciting suggestions to help round out a possible kitbash submission...

So, it turns out I like doing tiles in sets of four, since I've been using the anchor layout from the Garden set - it has four groups of anchors and a spot for a thumbnail indicating which tile the anchors are for. Assuming I combine my straight river tiles and diagonal river tiles into one kitbash submission... I think I'll package up the following tiles:

2x 6" "straighter" straight river tiles (one with stones, one without)
1x 6" straight river tile with little island
1x 6" diagonal river tile
2x 6" diagonal-to-straight bend river tiles (left and right bends)
1x 6" diagonal-to-straight "Y" river tile

Well, those are what I have done so far. That's only 7. So, either I do one more, or I do five more... If I do another straight river type of tile, I can have two kitbashes of 4 tiles each. Alternatively, I can do a single kitbash of 8 or 12 tiles.

There are obviously a lot of wonky combinations I could do, but I don't feel it is necessary to cover them all. Here are some reasonable possibilities:

1x 6" diagonal "v" river tile
1x 6" diagonal "x" river tile
1x 6" "+" river tile with large-ish island in the middle
Any tile, with some rocks added in (pick a tile, pick another that has some rocks?)
Any tile, with some flowers added in (pick a tile, pick another that has some flowers?)
Something else river-tile related?

Keep in mind, if you just say "all of them" then I won't really take that into account. If you pick ONE as your preferred tile (so I can round out the first bash) and then, if you want, FOUR MORE as your secondary set, I'll gladly take that into consideration!

I'll consider doing a similar set for paths, which would also include a diagonal version of the bridge-over-river tile.

If you create a bash with diagonal rivers, you absolutely need to include a 3" 'corner' river (with only one corner as a river) to insure capability to create long rivers...

Yeah. That's already done. Sorry I didn't mention that.

See, 3" and Hallway tiles have anchors right on the page, so they cause me less pain. I hate not having the tile count make use of the anchor page well (I have PILES of extra anchors - many more than I'll ever need...) so I'm mostly trying to keep the 6" tiles to a multiple of 4.

Oh - I suppose I could take the 3" river corner tile I've done and turn it into a 6" tile. That would round out the pile, and I'd be done! But, if anyone has some real urges for other tiles, I'll take that into consideration.

If you wanted to look at roads next, could you do a road that goes along a hall tile? rather than across? I want to have narrow roads along cliff edges for high speed chases.

To set expectations... there is no chance this will be made available within the next month. Even if I were able to finish the kitbashing process enough to submit them, I am guessing it wouldn't be released for at least a month, and possibly more depending on how full the queue of submissions is. My free time, though, is pretty tight at the end of the year - kids birthdays, work deadlines, holidays with family... I'm trying to eke out enough time to get my little kitbashes (like this one) submitted so I don't just stall out... I'm betting these won't be submitted before mid-October.

I just submitted the "straighter" straight river tiles (not the angled ones). It's a set of four 6" tiles - one has the little island, and the others are the same straightened river tile with different scenic bits (rocks and flowers) on it.

The kitbash reviewers have been very good at picking up on little mistakes, and though I'm hoping I haven't burdened them with any on this set, I'll do my best to fix any things they have suggestions on.

So, I can scratch that little set of tiles off my list, and try to get the diagonal rivers done this month.

ROTFL. I'm really sorry, kitbash judges!

So, I was piecing together the diagonal rivers kitbash, and I caught myself making a mistake (leaving the anchors sheet out of the anchored tiles pdf...) and thought "I wonder what I did for the set I just submitted!"... It looks like I didn't even zip up the pdfs! Good lord, if it's a mistake that can be made, I will make it.

I'll resubmit everything again tomorrow, after I do a more genuine QA pass over the zip files.

OK. OK. Took a deep breath. Ate some dinner. Put the kids to bed... Then I repackaged the kitbashes.

I opened each pdf. Pretty sure now they have all the right grids, and the anchored versions have the page of anchors. I also opened the .studio files to make sure I picked out the right ones. Lastly, I dropped the tlx files into the planner, and made some images to make sure things work.
